EMIII is only designed to recognize the console client. You might want to rename the .exe file to FAH3Console.exe and then I think EMIII may work. If you use the GUI, you really don't need EMIII. I just prefer the console to avoid any possible 'graphic' conflicts. 9/17/2003 10:45:33 AM |

I think as far a recruiting more people, you should buy an ad banner from TWW. I think most of the people that come to the Tech Talk section have seen this thread. Maybe they are even tired of seeing it, I don't know. I guess the fact that we are still getting new members, means it is still effective. 9/27/2003 9:22:46 AM |

OK.
I run a cyber cafe on Hillsborough Street (The Tek, not to plug anything), and during our closed hours, we have 16 - 3.06 P4's w/ 512MB RAM on 2 T1 lines that are not being used. I want a warm and fuzzy feeling that this is not going to crash our systems, and that it can be disabled during working hours, and I might add a little bit of Number Crunching Power.
btw: I am good with a Graphing Calc and telephone. Can I sign myself up? 9/27/2003 10:54:10 AM |

thetek We would sure love to have you on board! Since you are running a business I would suggest just trying it out a a few machines first. Definatly use the console version. Run it from a directory of your choosing to set up your username and team. You might as well use www.thetek.com as your username, so at least you get some extra advertising. Use the Windows task scheduler and have it start at say 11:30PM daily. In the advanced task manager options, you can have it run for 7 hours while you are closed. Like I said just give it a try on a machine or two first. Folding runs at the lowest possible priority, so it should not effect any other programs, but since you are selling a gaming experience, I would not suggest running it during the day for now just incase there is a problem. Look forward to seeing you moving through the ranks! 9/28/2003 1:02:15 AM |

^Good work so far. I still don't know why Stanford shows your active processors at 0. Sometime I'll post a question over at the Stanford forums. The main thing is that you are getting credit for your WU's. Actually thetek has his own username:www.thetek.com on our team, so assuming all goes well he will be making short work of everyone. I expect to be passed sometime in the Spring of 2004. Remember I had basically a 1 year start on you all.
Also welcome to sean! We are currently in 136th place and recently smoked: John Hopkins and Cornell. Illinois is next! Keep up the good work! 9/29/2003 9:29:49 AM |

Yeah, the reason it shows 0 processors is that the link is wrong on the team stats page. Its b/c i used my email address (thinking it was like seti), so the link needs to be revised to: http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/userpage?name=chemp&s=prefix 9/29/2003 10:26:23 AM |

If your CPU supports Hyper-Threading, here is some info you should know about.
F@H runs at the lowest possible priority to only use unused CPU cycles. This worked fine until hyper-threading (HT) came along. With HT enabled now priorities are less relevant as the OS thinks you have 2 CPU's. In this case F@H may take away some cycles from other CPU intensive programs, even though the task manager will report 50% CPU usage (I don't have a HT CPU, but this is what I have read in some of the forums linked below). If this is a concern, either disable HT or close F@H when you launch these applications.
5-15% Speed Boost By Running 2 Instances of F@H Console on a HT Enabled CPU* If you really want to maximize your WU production, 2 instances run in separate directories with different Machine ID numbers can increase you total output. This may have some of the drawbacks as mentioned above with other CPU intensive programs.
From the Folding@Home discussion board: http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=5014&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=hyperthreading&start=0
Quote : | "Here is how HT compare to non-HT. Just my .02
If I run only one F@H on HT enable assume it takes 9 minutes per step. If I run two F@Hs one on client version and second on Console Version. It will take only 16 minutes per step. So that is about 17% faster when compare with 2 WUs.
HT enable or HT disable, this I believe will make no different if you run only one F@H. The CPU usage that you see about 50% if you run only one F@H on HT enable, infact that system is run at 100% CPU.
HT enable is good for first dedicated folding system and other general uses It's not a good idea for ppl who run softwares which rely on CPU only like capturing/encoding video becuz those software are suffered from loosing part of CPU to F@H.
BTW I have two 2.6C folding as I described." |
Again I have no experience with HT, I'm just passing on what I have read in some of the forums. If any of you have/not noticed any problems with your HT CPU feel free to report them here. Also welcome to our new member: mellocj!9/30/2003 2:12:39 PM |

well i am an experienced ht folder with 3, 3.5ghz ht enabled machines, what i do is run two consoles on each machine and then set the afinity of each one too a diff processor and that is how we crank them out so fast at team silversurfinsmackerkrackers, so actually our team is only running on 10 processors not the 13 that is being recorded 9/30/2003 8:29:43 PM |

I can only assume they decided not to run it, or have been too busy to try it out. I installed it on one machine for them to give it a try. If they continued to run it, they should have turned in a few WU's by now. I hope they don't give up! 10/5/2003 5:23:33 PM |
Smacker All American 3926 Posts user info edit post |
Running f@h with two consoles on an ht cpu is pretty disgusting, but if you have process that need your cpu a lot then it starts to slow you down alot. What i do is whenever i do something like capture video or work on something intense i turn fah off. I started doing this when i noticed i was only using 50% of my cpu using that graphical version, i think that has something to do with ht not being able to use both processors on a single application. If you set your affinity of your fah consoles to a certain cpu i think that keeps fah a lot more stable because theres actually two processes for each console the FAH3.25 Console and FahCore_78, u can see those if you lookin in task manager and at your processes. So if you set each pair to one cpu, you'll be folding faster. 10/6/2003 3:03:43 AM |

I think our 1st goal should be to win the ACC title! Currently Georgia Tech is in 81st place: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_overview.php?TeamID=10971 We are outproducing them currently, but not by much. At this pace we would not pass them until late in 2005.

at the rate we are going it looks like we should be in the top 100 soon, by years end... our weekly numbers compare with those in the top 75. Might need a few more cpu's on board to get to number one Or better yet a huge power outage in australia.
hopefully acc champs will come sooner than 05... 10/6/2003 11:46:37 AM |
