NCSU, Duke, and UNC have the three best records in the ACC. Will be a crazy 8 game stretch where 7 of our games are against those two.

Speaking of which...why are we playing UNC the extra time? Is that typical? I don't remember that happening in the past.

Our team is good. Offense is loaded. Kinneman is playing like an All-American (#4 nationally in HRs). McClain has been quietly brilliant too, per usual.

Our ace pitcher (Brown) is playing like an ace, and our 2nd ace has been mostly great (sans this weekend). The bullpen is nasty across the board.

But still -- at some point you start to wonder if our lack of a #3 starter is going to doom us. I know a lot of teams don't have a single starter they feel good about, so we're lucky with two good ones. But we're the supposed #2 team in the nation, and we don't have a reliable No. 3 starter? Kind of scary

edit: i don't mean that as an insult, it's just a common problem for many college programs. And becomes a big problem in post season best of 3 series.

^I think with our offense we'll have a decent shot in a tournament environment. When we're throwing our 3rd pitcher, not likely other teams will be rolling their #1 out there.

speaking of #3 starter, i can't remember the last time we had a guy that we could trot out on the 3rd day and feel really good about it.

Pleasantly surprised about our bullpen. We're relying on alot of freshmen out there and they're performing really well

Not having a true #3 is an issue, but State has generally been able to get at least 2 good starts a series with Brown and then one of Piedmonte / Bienlien. On the flip-side though, they've got a lot of bullpen pitchers who can throw multiple innings. Avent has done a good job in managing that this year.

Johnston has been one of the better pitchers out of the pen, but didn't pitch at all this weekend - so you figure he'll be starting tomorrow night in Wilmington with Harrison / Gautier behind him. Once week-day games are over, then State's got the ability to use that entire pen if any starter runs into problems.

Florida apparently has two top 10 mlb draft prospects in their rotation. Not sure what they have for a 3rd starter.

won 8-3 at UNCW. Harrison started, pitched 2 1/3, gave up 1 unearned run and allowed 3 baserunners. O'Donnell pitched two perfect innings to close things out. Wilson was 2-5 with a 3 run homer, McLain and Cooper each got 2 RBI singles.

iAgree with posters above that the offense will have to continue to be legendary for us to go deep in tourney. Its amazing how this whole 'spread the bullpen 1-2 innings every 3rd game' thing is actually working for us so far.

The problem is when you get into tourney ball, you see better pitching early. Now pitching can obviously get thin later, but that requires getting deep.

Looked like we were going to cruise in that game...then Notre Dame just started belting homers. Thought we pulled Piedmonte too early...he gave up two solo shots, but looked good other than those two pitches. Next two guys come in and we give up 6 runs in the 4th. Apparently Piedmonte had "back stiffness".

Oh well...lets hope we can keep the streak of dropping the first and taking the next two alive.

Game 1 was all pitching gaffs. Scoring 8 runs should be enough for a Pack win.
