Can someone at this point attempt to defend the existence of collegiate varsity athletics? I'm not talking amateurism, I'm talking the fact that the teams even exist made up of "students" receiving scholarships because they're good at putting a ball in a hoop or making a tackle.
Have no issue with club teams where groups of students administrate it themselves more or less, I'm just talking varsity outfits.
Honestly, the NCAA should just disband and university sports teams should be declared for-profit businesses and required to pay taxes. All that's needed is a congressman or senator to have the spine to stand up to his local state and private universities and see this as his way to a national profile.
Re Miller, ESPN:
Quote : | "FBI wiretaps intercepted telephone conversations between Arizona coach Sean Miller and Christian Dawkins, a key figure in the FBI's investigation into college basketball corruption, in which Miller discussed paying $100,000 to ensure star freshman Deandre Ayton signed with the Wildcats, sources familiar with the government's evidence told ESPN.
According to people with knowledge of the FBI investigation, Miller and Dawkins, a runner working for ASM Sports agent Andy Miller, had multiple conversations about Ayton. When Dawkins asked Miller if he should work with assistant coach Emanuel "Book" Richardson to finalize their agreement, Miller told Dawkins he should deal directly with him when it came to money, the sources said.
The telephone calls between Miller and Dawkins were among 3,000 hours of conversations intercepted from Dawkins' phone alone by the FBI." |

Interesting take on NCAA sports. I would also add that the pro leagues need to lift their restrictions and let anybody go pro whenever they feel like it.

I'm some will try, but it's beyond defending, in my opinion.

They should, but this will be fought and the defense of "amateurism" will be used precisely because they don't want student athletes to realize the massive untapped labor power they have. The entire NCAA is a house of cards built on the back of unpaid labor provided by student athletes that funnels money to god-knows-where.2/24/2018 3:46:46 PM |

It doesn't look good, but the particular email they referenced doesn't mention anything specific, just that he and Early had contacted him about unrelated stuff. But not a good look if the university sent the agent a letter in 2012 to fuck off and Gott was in contact with him about something. Probably advice on coaching defense. 2/24/2018 9:39:54 PM |

I don’t know if the denial is that bad considering there’s been no direct tie to Gottfried and the staff knowing about this yet. We’re all bracing for more info to come to light. But until then, based on what’s known now, I don’t think it’s doomsday for State. And I don’t think saying that is me being in denial

Of course I agree there is no merit to the NC State shit argument. It’s dumb. And as of now there is nothing clear that would bring the hammer down on us. But we have proof now that Gottfried and Eary were in touch with Dawkins, and Miller knew about it. So, I think it’s a little naive to assume Gottfried knew nothing of Dennis Smith taking money and that he wasn’t lining something shady up with Dawkins as well. I’m just praying there’s no paper trail and we get away with whatever nonsense Gott was up to. 2/25/2018 1:16:59 PM |

This is where I'm at. While we don't know the context of Gottfried's emails with the runner, that simple fact that we were talking to them while they were paying one of our recruits tens of thousands in loans doesn't look good. What if the "separate matter" was Dennis Smith Jr.? Why were we in contact at all with an employee of a guy the university had disassociated itself with? We just have to hope that there's little evidence showing involvement from members of our coaching staff(s) or university administration. It's hard not to think this doesn't go back to guys like Cat, Purvis, Leslie, or even Hickson.

I think we pull a UNC and tell the FBI to fuck off, too. I can't think of what crime was actually committed here. Every single college in the US tries to persuade kids to come to their school with money: it's called a "scholarship." 3/11/2018 7:57:48 PM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
So is the NCAA going to punish 75% of it's P5 programs and ruin it's own post-season(profitability) for a year or two, or are they just going to let the FBI do it's thing and then put new changes in place to try and fix this going forward?
Let FBI finish. Identify what players were proven to have taken impermissible benefits. Deem those players ineligible and strip those wins from the teams. Put new guidelines in place and work with schools/NBA/companies/agents to come up with methods of deterring this behavior going forward. Move along.
See you guys in a couple of years when all of the FBI findings have been reported, criminals punished, and then the NCAA takes another year or two to figure out what to do about the whole situation. 3/12/2018 9:10:03 AM |
aaronburro Sup, B 53062 Posts user info edit post |
The FBI doesn't care about impermissible benefits. They won't look at any of that in detail. The only thing they care about are federal crimes. I don't see much that they will find or do, unless someone is stupid and lies to them, but they aren't going to push too hard into an investigation for the NCAA's sake. FFS, we couldn't get a real criminal investigation into Pell Grant Fraud at UNC, so why should we think the FBI is going to push all that hard on non-criminal behavior? I mean, if someone is paying hookers, then that's one thing, but handing someone money to pick a certain school? That's a tough sell from a legal perspective.
Put simply, the NCAA isn't going to gain much from the FBI beyond what we already know. The schools that are in the deepest trouble will axe their coaches. The bigger schools will get off scott-free, ala UNC and Duke, and the NCAA will crucify a couple of the less-important schools, just to make a show of it. They'll also probably nail someone at our level in the pecking order, so I fully expect us to get sanctioned.
Honestly, this is just another nail in the coffin of "amateur" athletics, where the big programs will see that they can do whatever the hell they want, short of paying for hookers and abortions, while the lesser programs get fucked for doing the same thing. It's going to take the lesser programs refusing to play along with it for anything to change, but they are going to have to realize that there are two enforcement regimes: one for them, and one for UNC, Duke, and Kentucky.] 3/12/2018 1:01:48 PM |
