He's in the transfer portal. Our biggest news transfer bc he was maybe our best OL last year.

Other than last season's results, our recruiting class and the prospects of our returning players.. I feel fairly good about next season.

^^Nope. Icky was 2nd team All-ACC per PFF and got some 1st team All-American FR recognitions. Dude should be the future of our OL for the next 3 years.

Our OL was solid all-around, but Icky was the best of the bunch.

Oh good, sports talk was getting too fun, somebody starting a bad argument will cure that!

Quote :
"First Team: Joshua Fedd-Jackson, NC State
Fedd-Jackson led the conference in run-blocking grade at the position as he ranked in the top 10 nationally in the run game. He was no slouch in pass protection either, allowing just 15 pressures on a whopping 529 snaps in pass protection. He mauled up the middle and paved the way for some wide-open lanes while allowing just a combined three sacks and hits in the passing game."

Last I saw they seemed to think Fedd-Jackson was headed to the NFL Supplemental Draft.

But also heard he had put on a lot of bad weight after the season ended and I imagine if that's the case, then he probably isn't using the quarantine to get in shape.

I don't bet on sports, especially wouldn't bet on NC State, but if this was a normal season in terms of schedule and such, I'd bet the over on that, for sure.

Without an offseason and assurance on a full season, no way I'd bet on any sports.

Barring us getting annihilated by injuries again, I think you have 3 locks for wins(Troy, Delaware, Liberty). That leaves you having to find 2 wins with plenty of options available: Duke, Wake, BC, Cuse.

I just don't see how our team could learn the new offense and how our team will develop without directly working with the coaching staff and we're at a huge disadvantage with having a brand new OC.

UNC and UL will be favored because of proven QB play.
Clemson and FSU will be favored because of overall talent.

yeah liberty is a solid team with a good coach(/bad human.) i have no idea what they return or lost, but suggesting that is a lock is laughable considering our QB situation.

If we lose teams like Liberty and Troy, we aren't going to win a game in the ACC.

They likely have the starter talent to hang around but we SHOULD have better overall depth and talent, particularly the games early in the season when we're hopefully healthy.

We don't even need GOOD QB play, we just need COMPETENT QB play at this point. We have a good OL with really good RBs, we just need everyone healthy. Plus you have to assume Leary knowing he's the starter for an entire year worth of work with the starters would have to help.

Now, all of that goes out the window if the preseason is thrown out the window because I don't know how much of the new offense our team can learn without actual team reps and working with Beck and the Staff.

And to be fair, looking at those 2 teams...
Liberty loses it's starting QB, top RB, and top WR. Losing 6 starters on O and 5 starters on D.
Troy loses it's starting QB, top RB, and top TE. Not sure about the OL or D.

Plenty of chances for wins if we can just improve at QB and on D.

^Because I didn't realize that JFJ made 1st team All-ACC? I just knew that Icky made All-ACC 2nd team per PFF as a LT and a TRUE FR.

Still think Icky is our best OL heading into this season even if JFJ back, if only because he's playing at what is considered a more important position and was playing at an All-ACC level as a true FR compared to JFJ as a JR. I expect a nice jump by Icky with another offseason.

I'd like to have JFJ back at last year's production, but if the rumors of him ballooning up by 40+ pounds and not showing up to workouts is true, then with the quarantine and such, I imagine he wouldn't show up in the Fall remotely in shape to contribute.

Why would he show up to workouts if he's in the transfer portal?

Also, left tackle is the single most overrated position in all of sports.

Also, there was nothing competent (or remotely close to competent) about the QB play last year. Especially from Leary/Hockman

^^i mean yes? You were confident enough to try to shit on a point but you were completely wrong. When you are loud and forcefully wrong, people might doubt your future takes.

And hey guess what, losing an All acc OL player is a huge loss even if there is another all acc OL on that 5 man line that you think is better

^^The reports of WHY he ended up in the transfer portal stemmed from him gaining a ton of bad weight and then showing up late or skipping workouts BEFORE he entered the portal. Apparently Doeren told him he needed to "shape up or ship out" and he chose to ship out. Also came out that he contemplated entering the NFL Draft early this year but opted to return, and thus why he's being mentioned as a possible entry into the supplemental draft(missed window for NFL Draft).

^How was I terribly wrong? I said I felt Icky was better than JFJ, that's an opinion. I think having a true FR OL being mentioned as an All-American by any publication is huge. He was considered "raw" with "a lot of upside" when he committed, so I just think heading into next year he would see a bigger jump in production and be our best OL. I even said "our OL was solid all-around", I never said JFJ wasn't a good player, I simply said I felt Icky was the best player on our OL.

I agree overall our QB play was bad, but there were flashes from Leary that were promising. The kid was getting limited reps with the 1's the entire offseason, had NO in-game experience, by the time he got to play our team was riddled with injuries, and we had a new OC who hadn't called plays in years.

Now Leary went into the Spring as the starter, would normally get almost all of the 1st team reps, and would work with Beck who HAS called plays at the P5 level for several years. This whole offseason is clearly going to throw a huge wrench in things, but if we had an entire normal offseason, the expectation would be that we could get to at least an AVERAGE level of QB play. I'm not asking for another Brissett/Finley, just someone who can keep teams from stacking the box and being a 60/40 run/pass team.

I said "maybe our best", which is so minor it's shitty to argue in the first place, but you said not "I think this player is probably the best" or something you said "nope" like it was stupid to post that at all. Then, the evidence you used to support your argument actually turned out to support MY statement, so now youre using new criteria (neither of which really fit for "best", most valuable or a better asset maybe but not "best").

I mean my biggest problem is you started a stupid argument. If JFJ was just our 2nd best OL, it still sucks to lose him even if he was "lost" bc his attitude turned shitty and he was benched. When a good performer is no longer a good performer for your team, it's bad. But then beyond the stupid argument, you used lazy reasoning to support your argument.

[Edited on April 8, 2020 at 3:41 PM. Reason : His position is super likely to be worse this season, thats bad]

I don’t know if Leary is going to be good, but nothing he did last year made me optimistic going forward. He showed nothing but a strong arm.

Flashes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7qxL9wz4NU

I'm not saying he was great, but he definitely had some impressive plays/throws and shows signs of having all the tools to be at least an average college QB.

Arm strength is clearly there, some of the windows he fit the ball in on that video were impressive, but some of them were really dangerous throws. He shows he can go through progressions, looks off the safety on the deep throws, shows the ability to scramble while keeping his eyes down the field, etc.

The hope would be that he could harness all those tools he has with more 1st team reps. He might never pan out, but he clearly had the most upside of the 3 QBs we saw last year and we have to hope the lumps he took last year payoff going forward.

I realize it’s pretty much just lip service, but the State official twitter account have been doing a Pack United hashtag focusing on black people killed by police. It’s a neat gesture I guess, but it’s mostly just an empty gesture, so I’m not applauding them too much. I just wanted to point out that I’ve been relatively surprised to see very little “all lives matter” bullshit in the replies.
