I wear regular sneakers and it isn't a problem. I'll probably get some minimus when I have the money though. And they suggest paleo, but aren't dicks about it. 9/15/2012 10:25:55 AM |

What is wrong with minimalist shoes? Lifting wise, they are much better than ordinary running shoes. For running and other stuff, whatever floats your boat but I would rather lift barefoot than wear typical running shoes.9/15/2012 10:46:14 AM |

I don't get how people work out when they aren't fully recovered and don't get hurt. I always feel like I'm risking it when I do, but since this is my last week where I am I didn't want to skip for tired legs. We were doing 3rm squats and on the last set I was a little wobbly and felt a crackling kind of sensation in my lower back. It didn't hurt, but I heard it. Now it's all tight. Is that the kind of thing I stretch or leave alone? 10/3/2012 9:22:32 AM |

Stretch, roll, heat, massage, ice; repeat. Scar tissue can be a bitch to try to stretch/strengthen later. The stretching/rolling/massage should stimulate blood flow to help you heal and help prevent (some) scar tissue from forming.

It could just be your spinal joint that you "cracked" ( much like how you crack your knuckles). I think skack and I know a thing or two about back injuries How is it going btw, Skack? Or you fully recovered? 10/3/2012 11:10:15 AM |

Going well. The numbness & tingling seems to have subsided for the past five or six weeks.
I haven't been doing "crossfit" per se, but I have been very consistent with my workouts all summer. Most of my workouts have revolved around walking or swimming with rowing, pushups, squats, and lunges thrown into the mix. I loaned my kettlebell to my brother and haven't touched the bar/plates for a few months, but my chest and shoulders seem to have grown from the pushups, rowing, and swimming. I feel like I've made the best of the situation and look forward to hitting the weights again this fall. I do wish I had made the dietary changes to cut some weight this summer, but that has nothing to do with my back problems and I've enjoyed eating well with all the exercise I've been getting.

I'm currently coaching a pretty impressive "crossfit athlete" for the upcoming carolina fitness challenge... I am blown away how many overuse injuries and crappy movement patterns she's acquired from dong crossfit wods religiously over the past 4 years.
I've already fixed a lot of issues, so hopefully she will crush the competition. And, prove my theory that approaching training intelligently, rather than randomly, is optimal. 10/5/2012 4:37:19 PM |

Bulging disc in the t12/l1, EXTREMELY tight hip flexors, tight hip external rotators, quad dominance in all lifts. Weakness going in to posterior pelvic tilt. Hyper lordosis. 10/5/2012 5:07:05 PM |

I'm not sure what she focused on in the past.
Now she's on a regimen off hip flexor stretching, glute and oblique strengthening, and posterior pelvic tilt practice.
Also practicing a lot of hip hinging with proper core alignment and stiffness. 10/5/2012 5:48:12 PM |

Maybe that's part of the problem. She sucked at doing her own homework, and it's not entirely Crossfit's "fault".
Anyway, back to the dumb programming at my old box I was talking about. A total of 4 benchmark/hero WOD in one week. Must have been a lazy week and they didn't want to think too hard.

Lots of controversy over this picture. Those who criticized it marked as a "hater", those who didn't thought it was badass. Some good points from those who support it though. I am one of those who says...just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Let's see him do it with a baby strapped to his chest and replace the kettlebell with a newborn kitten - for reps. That's hardcore.

Had a roommate in college who was fond of the phrase "That's a good way to bust your ass." Seems relevant.
I wouldn't do something like that as a workout, but I don't have a problem with it as an exhibition of ability. It doesn't seem that different from images of Shaolin monks showing off their remarkable feats of strength and balance.
When a gym starts putting 20 reps of one leg overhead squats while balancing on a kettlebell into their WOD we have a problem.

Now that's elite functional movement.
What blows my mind is that this isn't just one person being retarded. It's a handful of people, including "judges", who somehow deemed this safe and a good idea.

Congrats!
I tried a 500M sprint last week and ended up at 1:31.5. Disappointed because I was hoping to be under 1:30, but I ran out of gas, botched the last 4-5 pulls pretty badly, and coasted across the finish line. Close though...I kept a 1:28-1:29 pace for the first 400M. I can get there with a little better cardio.

PR'd yesterday on power-cleans. Did 100 pounds, and was very close to being able to properly jerk, too. I tried again with 5 more pounds, but I was a bit fatigued and couldn't stand up from the squat.
I was also able to do pistol squats with a 9 pound kettlebell in each hand this week.
Yay for finally improving. 11/2/2012 1:25:05 PM |

still recovering from some partially torn ligaments in my ankle & recovering from surgery to fix deviated septum & to open up the airways in my nose. Been restricted to doing nothing for the past month or so, so I'm really looking forward to getting back at it.
Doc won't let me do any plyo stuff thanks to my ankle, but the coaches at the box I go to are modifying the wods so that pretty much all I do is upper body stuff and working the opposite leg. Still can't run though, which sucks but did get clearance to ride a bike. 12/29/2012 5:48:52 PM |
