The new CX-9. I really want a station wagon this fall, but there just isn't a good option out there.

Do you have to buy new?

No. But to me, depending on the model, buying new make sense (financing, price, etc). I posted last year in the wagon thread, but none of those (TSX, Caddy) tickle my fancy. Then we ended up moving and buying a home so we put it all on hold. I'm really torn between a wagon or a 3 row crossover. We already have a CRV which is fine with wife and baby. However, we are planning on one more. I get the van argument but it's not happening. There really aren't many options new (Golf Sportwagen, Outback...it's really more of crossover).

The other outside option is buy a beater Tahoe or what. I don't drive much because of the work ride, but we are putting a ton of miles on my wife's car because everyone is embarrassed by my accord. Only reason I don't want this is because I want some fucking modern amenities.

Do you really need a true wagon or would a larger hatchback like a Mazda3 hatchback work?

Do you really need 3 rows?

What's wrong with the Outback again?

If SUV, have you considered the MDX? Could get a nicely appointed one used without any reliability concerns.

I would like the wagon so we can go out longer trips and not take her car.

No, but ain't that shit standard on the bigger SUV/CUVs now?

I dunno. Doesn't seem fun.

I do like this new Golf Alltrack coming out

The new Durangos are pretty damn slick. The R/T version sounds like fun in particular...a "badass SUV" in the vein of things like the Trailblazer SS. (Which was the only Trailblazer variant worth a damn...but still...)

I can't stop thinking about the slow poke that I had to follow down the mountain on Monday. He had an Obama 2012 bumper sticker and a coexist bumper sticker on his car. Anyone want to guess what he was driving?

Motorheads, get one before they are gone... extremely rare and almost impossible you will ever find one again for sale in the US, especially looking like mint from the outside!

"Man stops car on edge of 3,500-metre Saudi mountain

Described as one of the riskiest acts

Published Tuesday, July 26, 2016

A Saudi adventurer stopped his car on top of a 3,600-metre-high mountain in the Gulf Kingdom and a newspaper described it as one of the riskiest and most daring acts.

‘Ajel’ newspaper published a picture showing the man standing near his car on the edge of a tilting cliff on Fifa mountain in the Southern Jazan province.

It said the picture was posted online and that there were mixed reactions by viewers, with some lauding the man’s courage and others criticising the unnecessary risk."

That's ~11,800 ft for you heathens

I can understand (but would never dare try it) coasting the break with a lead foot until the edge and then pulling up the hand brake to get there. But to get back up, he will have to put it in reverse (those LandCruisers come with manuals) and ram the accelerator while letting go of the clutch ever so lightly, right? This dude must be the world champ for manoeuvering cars precisely on hilly steep roads using a manual transmission car. I rented a manual transmission car in the UK on holiday with wife and daughter (while I myself owned an automatic) and we went driving in the countryside. One town/village was uphill, and I had to parallel park between two cars while on an incline... that was certainly an experience! Coming out was tricky too, to avoid rolling into the car behind me. Damn, that dude has dinosaur balls.

To back up he can do that, or if the parking brake mechanism is a hand level (I'm not that knowledgeable with old Cruisers) he can leave the parking brake partially engaged while he backs up. Do that properly and the engine will be strong enough to overcome the brake but gravity will not.

Also I had no idea that Saudi Arabia had mountains that tall!

Also noticed the rear wheel looks like it's in a rut or dip that's looks like it's helping anchor the car as well.

^ hmmm yeah maybe!

^^ yup, it has a hand brake... don't most non-luxury cars? and yeah, i remember i had to use that technique a few times while on an incline.

Saudi Arabia is most flat, but there are a few mountains in the South, with the tallest peak being ~10,000 feet. You can see a topography map here:

"There are a few drawbacks. One is the ride, which is absolutely punishing in anything other than Comfort mode. I'm not sure exactly why the car rides like this, but I believe it's because the designers wanted to simulate 19th-century rail travel. The other drawback is the noise: Ford pipes in some engine noise when you're in Sport mode, but it's not like you're ever going to mistake this thing for a V8 or even a V6. This is a 4-cylinder, plain and simple, and it sounds like one in spite of the piped engine noise and the exhausts in back that could swallow a full-grown anteater."

corvettes with coilovers installed, replacing the leaf springs.

I test drove a new miata last week and thought about how different miatas and several other small sports cars handle, compared to a corvette. Corvettes aren't bad, they just aren't as great as maybe they could be. I have typically just blamed leaf springs, but i am largely presuming my logic, rather than confirming it. The big flaw I feel is inconsistent and fluctuating suspension deflection response while cornering. It feels solid, but if one rear wheel passes over an undulation, there seems to be a significant momentary decrease in stability, a tiny stepping out, and then re-establishing rolling grip similarly snaps just a little bit back. It's jarring because the car body itself doesn't deflect much, so it isn't truly unloading the wheel, and the car is generally so stable that a slight change feels like something much worse is about to happen. The only corvette I can remember driving where it felt immune from that was a c5 z06. the worst I encountered was a c6 z06. The c5 z06 was on a longer route on much better roads, whereas the c6 was just an around-the-block with some curves of about a mile between a few lights, with several potholes.

I wonder whether a coilover suspension would comparatively have much more consistent rate and progressive rate increase over its travel, especially in the initial deflection from equilibirum ride height.

Anyone weigh in on this? I'll create a new thread. I'd like to ride-along with someone who did that modification.

Owning a c6z51, I am interested in your findings... I have upgraded Bilstein shocks on factory leafs. I'm used to driving shitboxes, so I find the suspension to be pretty awesome...

If Chevy thought they'd have superior handling with a conventional spring design I'm sure they'd be using it now.
