Anyone have any recent experience with Allen Edmonds? Seems like I've seen more reviews lately popping up about quality control. I was considering picking up a pair of some simple cap-toe oxfords since I haven't had a brown pair of dress shoes I've liked in awhile, but I want to make sure that I am getting something quality for the AE price. This is the pair I was looking at:
Hoping someone has a decent holiday deal or something.

if i have to wear a sneaker with a jean i make sure it's something low profile like a converse chuck taylor. a few pages back i posted a pair of gray Saucony's that I wear in a very very casual situation, but not very often as i don't like running/gym sneakers with jeans.
another option is a pair of Vans originals, the low profile ones, not the padded skate ones.
i ordered these which are made for urban cycling with a supported footbed and tougher upper, but they give you an idea. Vans makes similar styles.] 11/15/2013 9:39:48 AM |

just that general style
i don't completely get all the hate for sketchers though...they are pretty solid on cheap men's shoes...
they suck for women's shoes though

The talk about quality control is a discussion relative to what AE used to be. Their product is still offered at a much higher quality and with greater product control than basically any comparable product at that level. You can get a higher quality shoe but not at that price, and at the same price range you can certainly do a lot worse.
I believe you posted a pair of Park Avenues yes? I'm debating picking up a pair as well. I know a lot of people with Strands but I'm not huge on the broguing just as a personal style choice. There's definitely AE sales so keep your eye open. Some bits of advice on getting them at a good price: 1) There's an Allen Edmonds outlet in Mebane, NC. They have I think twice-annual tent sales, but I don't know when. They have the best deals then. 2) Sometimes a batch of seconds or late season shoes gets put up in one of their warehouses, and they provide an email/phone number that you can contact with a model and size you're looking for, and they'll tell you what's available. You have to snoop online for when this happens, but there might be a newsletter. 3) Nordstrom does price-match on shoes. When there's a sale online and they don't have your size, you can price-match them at Nordstrom if you're nice about it and lucky. Sometimes they are more critical than others, but I've seen people get expensive Red Wings and Wolverine leather boots and stuff this way.11/18/2013 12:25:08 PM |

I'd like to get a couple more low-profile casual shoes or slip-ons for summer. I have some super low profile Sauconys and an almost charcoal pair of chucks that are my main two tennis shoes right now. I like both and they both go with most of my jeans, cords, and chinos when I want a casual shoe (ie not any of my leather oxfords, boots, etc.) but I'd just like a couple more options.
I have black, grey, and very dark denim for my jeans and then a wide variety of colors of chinos and cords, so I'm looking for stuff that could go with a variety of my pants and thus staying pretty neutral.
Couple things in mind for a new pair or two. Possibly some vans in either the slip on or the classic variety (I currently have no slip ons so that's why I'm considering that as well). Maybe in a menswear type pattern like this picture?
I like a few varieties of their slip-ons, but I don't think they come in a lo-pro version so the sole is chunkier which I don't really like nearly as much.
And then finally, another option is the off-white/canvas chucks as well. Over the years, I've never been able to decide whether I like or dislike this color though:
I'm open to suggestions though. I'm just not a boat-shoe or loafer kind of guy really, so these are the kind of shoes I use instead in the summer.

I did it. I found some shoes that nobody will own or compliment.

They look cheap and dorky, which is perfect. And, after wearing them a week, I've discovered they are super comfortable and indestructible. I love these shoes, and I'm very grateful for the Dominican Republic's "fine artisans" for taking such painstaking care in handcrafting these shoes. LOL 5/5/2014 9:30:45 AM |

^ Those are the sexiest shoes I've ever seen in my life.
I went to get some new running shoes and ended up with some red suede Vans too. They were 80% off at the Foot Locker or Foot Action or whatever in Crossroads...In any case, they were $12 which is cheap!

So I never understood how people buy shoes online.
If you try shoes on in a store, and then buy them online, ok, otherwise:
1) What about comfort, and how they will feel once you are wearing them and walking in them? 2) And size as well? There are always slight variations between companies for the same numerical size.
So how do people do it? Always baffled my mind. 5/14/2014 8:52:01 PM |

^ Amazon has free returns on shoes and they give you a shipping label to make it easy to send back. I have sent back only 2 pairs out of like 10 pairs ordered.

^^You just return them if they don't work out.
But you'll always have potential for the same problem with shoes you buy in the store. After you wear them a few times, you may realize they aren't good for your feet or your step or something, but they're worn so you can't return them.

By now, I know my general fit in multiple brands that I tend to frequent. 90% of the time if I am buying from a brand I already know I can pick my size online accurately.
and for the other 10%: free return shipping.
Sometimes if I am buying a brand online that I am not familiar with, I'll buy 2 sizes and just send the one back that didn't work.
I don't really see how it is much different than buying them in a store. 5/14/2014 9:15:07 PM |

ok what about the fact that in a store you can try 10 different pairs and then choose the optimal one based comfort and style (and even try multiple stores)?
sure, you can do that online too, but does anybody buy several pairs with the goal of trying them on and then sending all but one back? 5/14/2014 9:33:30 PM |
CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
several people I know. I wasn't the one who thought of it. I had multiple people tell me they did that so I have done that on more than one occasion myself now. I just did that a few weeks ago (tried several vans slip ons in multiple sizes and sent back all but 1).
Stores have a pretty limited quantity compared to online to be honest. So from a style/looks perspective I tend to look online more and have a lot more luck finding what I want from an aesthetics perspective. I do look in person and still buy shoes I find in person too, but I don't really feel weird buying online either.
Maybe I'm lucky though, but comfort has never been a big issue for me. Right size means it's comfortable 9 times out of 10.
