I turned the game on just in time to see UNC cut the lead to 2, then State hit a 3-run homer in the next inning.

Do we normally use so many pitchers in a game or was it a mid-week type deal where we want to save arms as much as possible for the weekend series with Duke?

Huh? How do you find a 3rd starter when no one pitched more than two innings? I do think Johnston and Justice both looked good...particularly Justice. Skinny kid, but was throwing heat.

^ Kinda. You don't want to burn one of your big starters for midweek games. At the same time, since it was a Tuesday game, you can probably use a lot of these pitchers on the weekend if you don't throw any of them too long. I don't think we had a pitcher reach 40 pitches...so they should all be available at some point this weekend. You will see this done frequently on Sunday's for staffs without deep starters...and of course in conference tournaments/regionals/CWS formats.

This is going to be a great weekend in college baseball.

#1 Florida @ #9 Kentucky
#2 NC State @ #8 Duke (Duke got pounded by #11 ECU in their mid-week game)

We need to take 2/3 to guarantee we stay ahead of Clemson as top of the ACC Atlantic division. UF will likely sweep UK, or at least 2/3, so unlikely we'll take the #1 spot from them this weekend.

Florida clobbered Kentucky last night.

If we swept Duke and UF dropped one this weekend, I think we could actually slide past them. They lost to Jacksonville earlier this week while we soundly beat a ranked UNC team.

Our first three losses were either Sundays or the third game of a series (we had a Saturday double header against BC). We've lost the opener the most recent 4 series. It's not a Friday thing, it's been that "3rd pitcher" game. But that makes it a bigger deal that we won today.

I feel like I've seen at least 4 of our players strike out looking on a full count already. This ump has a huge strike zone, it's why both pitchers are doing so well, but at some point you have to know to swing at anything close. Especially Kinneman in the 6th with a man on 2nd and no out.

UPDATE: Wilson batted in the first run of the game in the very next at-bat.

Bielein proved yesterday he's a mid-week starter at best -- at least for now. Luckily Johnston stepped up big time on Friday

#7 ECU tomorrow, then three games against #10 UNC this weekend. Once we get through this week it looks like smooth(er) sailing until May 17-19 (#17 Florida State) and then right into the ACC tournament.

ECU is going to be a tough, but since it's not a conference game I don't think Avent is going to push his good pitchers too far, needing them for the UNC games. It could go either way but won't be anything to get upset about if we loose.

Not only will UNC be fired up to play us but Clemson is only one game behind. Clemson is very capable of sweeping UVA this weekend so we can't afford more than one loss in this series.

Once again, this must be an eastern NC thing, because, being from charlotte growing up in a family of big wolfpack sports fan, nobody ever mentioned ecu in the same breath as unc, even in baseball.
Would much rather have everybody fresh to take down conference rival unc this weekend than waste ammo on a nonconference game.
