the scarring wasn't very obvious around the mouth (which has been mentioned several times). But I could see them not going too extreme/out there with it. And.... it's just for a second but they show him patting his head with a cloth/handkerchief. The light is shining through his handkerchief and it's very green looking. If it were wrapped around his head somehow, someone... say a frightened child, may think he has green ears/hair.

season 2 will apparently feature women in the lead roles

http://www.avclub.com/article/truedetectiveseason2-women-201553

i don't mean to sound like a dick since there are women who read this thread, but that article links to another criticism from the new yorker about the show's lack of strong female characters or whatever. andy greenwald said something similar in his early review of the show. does it really matter all that much? the wire and the sopranos really weren't any better about it.

Anyone know if the last episode is only going to be an hour? Seems crazy that they are going to wrap it all up in an hour.

i think it will be another episode similar to the Rust undercover with the bikers episode (which was faster paced than the rest).

I think they've got time to wrap it up. I just don't expect the typical, serving the audience everything on a platter type of ending.

And I don't expect to see everyone involved getting arrested on screen. They're about to potentially torture the sheriff and get quite a bit of info from him. I figure they (rust/hart) will either catch whoever it is and you know they're turning them over and it's left at that. But more likely, I think they'll kill whoever is involved or they may both end up getting right at the end of it and being killed themselves. They could technically "solve the case" in that the audience will be clear on who was involved and how, but not actually stop it from continuing. That would be pretty bleak, but this show doesn't exactly present brightest outlook on things.

Can't forget about Snoop either. Although she barely counts as a female I suppose.

If you can't write females, if that's not your thing, then it's better to feature them as minor characters or not at all. Also, if they don't belong in the story, then it's better to leave them out than to try to force them in.

I think True Detective did a good job of including some realistic minor female characters. They're still annoying. When Hart's wasted banging on Lisa's door, I was hoping she wouldn't open the door. But, of course, she opened it. And then he's tryna break it off with that other girl, and she's all, "I think I want it in my butt. I can't stop thinking about it in my butt. Only from you." LOL

All great writing, when you really get down to it, is about human nature. The simple fact of the matter is that the majority of writing out there, "great" or not, fucking sucks at describing 50% of humans, and that's really sad.

She "barely counts as a female"? That's a pretty disgusting thing to say. Do you say that because Snoop doesn't match your heteronormative view of what a woman should be?

Aw come on, don't be a gender studies major here. She's like Samus, only a female character if you check her pants. Additionally I think one could make a good argument that Snoop is likely an FTM trans.

I think Maggie's dad and their f'd up daughter are involved somehow. too much stuff happened w/ his daughter to just be a side plot.

Side note: Any thoughts on what it was that Marty saw on the VHS tape with the little girl and the cult? I guess it isn't a big deal what it specifically was.

It was the rape and murder of that Marie Fontano(sp) girl. The tape was from the reverends house. Rust took it when he was B&Eing

HBOGo fucking up last night was a huge fail. It's happened before but this was the worst. When I finally gave up it was nearing midnight. If they know people use the service (and not care that people share their login, per the CEO) they should probably step it up before Game of Thrones is back.

That said I did watch it this morning so I could freely use the internet today without worries of a spoiler--I loved the finale and this series. Thumbs up. EGOT for McConaughey.

Dazed and Confused the Musical for a Tony and Grammy. Boom!

overall, i enjoyed the 8-episode series but IMO it is not this epic story/show that it was all hyped up to be. I'd give it a solid B but nothing more for me. there were times where it was just too disjointed, not being able to follow along. the character development was good though; seeing basically the "rise and fall" of each character and their internal struggles was done well.

Yeah he was tripping at a very unfortunate time. It happened a few times throughout the show. One time while he was driving his truck.

On a side note I'm really interested to see who they line up for season 2 because in my mind they've really set the bar pretty high. I can't imagine being as excited about any other actors as I was when the cast of season 1 was announced. Not to mention that the acting was in fact superb.

My assumption with the wormhole is that when he saw it he was at peace and ready to die. He said the stars reminded him of his daughter or whatever.

It's all in the ending dialog. They are talking about how it is light versus dark and how there is so much darkness in the night sky, Rust points out that it was all darkness and now there are stars. This was creating their star. You'll notice it happens when Rust has no option to retreat. It doesn't matter if he lives or dies, at that point the story is out, there is no way to cover it up, the darkness is exposed. He saw his daughter while he was in the coma, which was after he saw the light and the dark star fall.

Just watched the finale last night...

So when Childress changed voices -- was that to imply that he has a multiple personality disorder or just that he was weird?
