A firm in DUNN. They sent me to court ALONE today to file a DOT and other fun real estate fun. It was borderline hazing. I am doing a lot of insurance research, some trust work, and zoning/statute interpretation.

Man, what fun to work with the Duke Case. Too bad about that whole Attorney/Client Confidentality thing. I would love to know what the DA has.

Rising 2L here officially. That first year hurt and exams gave me a new one, but I made it. Interning in Statesville at Law Office now...Criminal Law is more fun that I thought...always a good laugh

what sort of work is expected by 1L interns? what is it that you do? i assume they're not paid, so how do you make $$$ in the summer?

If its not paid, you don't make money during the summer. It is very important to have a legal work before law school or during your first summer. 2nd year jobs are very important and employers consider prior experience a big plus. A good 2L clerk could get an offer for when they graduate.

Firms consider experience when they are hiring, which 1L's lack. There are paid jobs for 1L's, you just have to check e-attorney and try to get an OCI (on campus interview). 1L's can not "legally" job search/be interviewed until November. Most firms hire in September/October.

You can get course credit for some unpaid internships. You just have to complete the required hours. Interns at Harnett County DA have a very flexible schedule.

what??? money shouldn't be the sole motivation for my entire life? i do tend to enjoy the finer things in life, and i'm eternally grateful for my parents being able to provide a comfortable lifestyle, but sometimes, people out there believe they are entitled to WAY more than they deserve. however, this guy just sounds like he doesn't know how to live a normal life...

as i understand, tiers matter less if you're in the top 10% of your class. with that said, it's a lot harder going to the west coast if you're in a southeast regional school no matter what your rank is.

Campbell is making everyone on academic probation (73-75) retake their entire first year. Our class median is fixed to 77-80 depending on the course. The majority of my classmates are very upset over this policy. A better solution would be to require certain course work the 3L year and repeat a class or two.

Anyone below a 73 is automatically out and cannot reapply to any aba law school for 2 years.

When Walt's brother was at campbell, they failed out 20 students and I think 10 left on their own/transferred. However, their class was over capacity and they weeded it out quick.

The Former Dean of UNC wrote a really good article about the need not to tease "unqualified" students by letting them pursue a degree, go $100,000 in debt and have them fail the bar or be so below the "reasonable lawyer" that they are just wasting their time trying to find a job. I feel that is why Campbell and Central fail so many students (not because they let in unqualified people, but that someone did not do well). I know someone that had a 165 LSAT and is in the bottom of our class.

One of my friends works in Corporate for a large gas station company in VA. One of his employees can barely handle running a small gas station terminal. That employee has a law degree from a top 50 school in NC.

As the future 1L's will find out, law students are taught an entire new set of critical thinking skills for analysis. Some students try hard and just do not develop them.

I would not base your ENTIRE decision on Rankings. 40% of the school's score is based on other law school/judges opinions of that school. Most judges and 1/3 of the law schools do not return the form.

I am clerking for a two partner firm that does very well compared to partners at big firms. The attorneys are 33-30 and work 40-45 hours a week. Granted, I am at a very good and professional small firm and some might not do that well.

They mean everything for the most selective jobs. Top 20% at Wake is better than top 10% at Campbell. Just check any large firm's website (Womble Carlyle, Smith Moore, Nexsen Pruet, Poyner and Spruill, Parker Poe, etc) and you will see that they all have far more Wake and UNC grads than Campbell grads.

And don't bet on being in the top 10% at either school...it can be a crap shoot. Go to Wake. It will give you many more options.

Hey, people already in Law School...

I start my first year on August 22, I am getting married on September 3rd, which is the Sunday of Labor Day, but will have to be in Chicago the Friday prior to that and I was wondering how lenient the professors are about missing a day. Especially since it will be only the second week of class.

How bad are the first couple of weeks as far as work load, etc.?

Not as heavy as the work will be in October, but will be really hard because you will be learning how to read cases (about 20 pages per class). Its a really good idea to read everything twice the first month of school. It will take you longer to do your reading in August than it will in November.

Just explain that you are getting married and be prepared for a little lecture/joke about how you should never get married and/or you should not get married during the school year. You can miss a few days in law school here in there, but your school could censure your grade if you miss a lot of class.

Just do the reading for Friday and Monday earlier in the week and take good notes on it. I like to "brief" in an outline with the important information of the case. your first few weeks of law school will be actual case work and you can expect to see it on your exam.

I need OCI/eattorney advice. I did not participate in on campus interviewing last year because I had a summer job already. There are a few jobs I would like to bid on for interview experience and would SERIOUSLY consider if I was chosen.

Do I need to have my finished resume when I bid or can I wait till next week to update it online?

Also, its hilarious some of the mom and pop firms in the middle of no where. They are requiring top 10% and Law Review/Moot Court when some of the big medium firms only want top half.

Is there a website to look at what firms offer first year associates?

I am interested mainly in contract issues/law

I would upload your finished resume out of an abundance of caution. My school's CSO submitted the resumes to firms as soon as bidding ended, so it wasn't always easy to update. You can always bring a new version to the interview.

Are you refering to salary, bonus and benefits? Try Nalpdirectory.com and Infirmation.com for medium to large firms. Your CSO should also have information on what OCI firms offer.

Now that I can finally post in Old School (apparently there are restrictions?), I would like to say a few things:

1) Is anyone going to Campbell as a 1L? If so, do you have a roommate?

2) I know a few people on here are going currently at Campbell, any thoughts, recommendations, advice for new students? Are there any apartments available at this point? I've gone all around I can hardly find anything. I'm going to sign a lease on Monday for a 2 bedroom town home (Wolf Creek) for $750, but I hope I can find something a little more reasonable or find a roommate--do any of you know of a law student who is looking for a place?

Orientation will suck. Everyone will be freaked out. Don't be the gunner that tries to talk the whole time (the smart kids in law school do not talk unless they ahve to). They spoke to us alot, but are trying to revamp that. We did a statutory analysis exercise and a case briefing seminar. You will break into small groups. WEAR A GOOD SUIT and tie. We had a kid show up in a searsucker shirt and slacks.

I sent you a PM. You can easily find a roomie in Buies Creek, however, it would be hard finding a student to live in Raleigh. 80% of my class lived in BC and most of the out of towners ended up in BC for weekend parties.

Did you get your oversized t-shirt yet?
