No fucking shit. I could also grill about 10 delicious steaks for the price it costs me to go to my favorite steak house....but that's not why you go. What a stupid statement.12/28/2013 10:31:31 PM |

^ Yeah it is pretty stupid. It's like those trolls who claim they like Subway because they can get a footlong (or 10", whatever) for $5, while admitting that the quality sucks.

You said it yourself. He has a great price on whole hogs, but his BBQ is just ok, and the fried chicken was dry the last couple times I've had it. Their sauce is awesome, the people are all kinds of nice, and their banana pudding is some of the best I've ever had so I still swing through there from time to time.12/28/2013 11:08:23 PM |

^^your assumption is that a sub is worth bickering over. subs are just filler food. good subs are still just mediocre, hence the indifference towards sub chains. BBQ is a work of art, worthy of discourse. 12/29/2013 12:55:39 AM |

I don't understand why Danny's is as popular as it is, its average at best and terrible if you don't want sweet sauce. They make a sweet sauce barbecue (texas style?) and also disgusting SC mustard-style barbecue. While their barbecue is okay in general, it's not worth the out-the-door line they have almost every day.
It's not the most over-hyped barbecue in RTP though, that award goes to Smokey's Barbecue Shack (the little white house on 54). Smokey's ribs and brisket are great, but their barbecue is just fucking terrible.12/29/2013 12:14:17 PM |

i am not trolling. wilbur's sucks. i grew up in goldsboro and ate there often when i was a kid. it used to be pretty good. the last time i went was probably 7 years ago. the bbq was dry and had no flavor at all. the slaw was milk with some shreds of cabbage floating in it. the potato salad seemed like runny instant mashed potatoes with a squirt of mustard. all the other sides were just dumped out of a can.
parker's is a little better.
there are some good bbq places around wayne, wilson, greene, pitt, lenoir and the rest of that general area, but wilbur's and parker's ain't it unless they've changed significantly in the past few years. my wife went to parker's in wilson recently and said it still sucks.
these restaurants used to serve good food, but they have no soul now. they just crank out large quantities of slop for the masses that saw that fucker on NC Weekend eat there. they are cash cows being milked by the decendents of the fine men who established them.

My grandmother lived in Goldsboro and we lived with her for several years plus spent most summers there from the time I was born until I was about 15. I, too, did not like Wilbur's. We would get stuff from King's when we went to Kinston, but I don't remember it being spectacular. Not bad though. Goldsboro is all about the Tasty Shoppe. 12/31/2013 10:03:46 AM |

I have been underwhelmed with the food I've had at Parker's and Wilbur's relative to the popularity of each. Maybe my expectations were not realistic, but I wouldn't say I overly enjoyed myself. that said, I wouldn't NOT eat at either place if I were passing by.

Ok, I haven't been to Wilbur's since 2008. I've been living in West Virginia and DC. If it's been in decline, yeah, it's probably due to mass production. Maybe you transplant fuckers should stick to your garbage pizza and stop ruining all our food because you're trying to be "folksy."

Part of my family was in Smithfield and part was in Burlington, so I had a lot of both types growing up, usually between Wilbur's or Stamey's in Greensboro (or Jimmy's in Lexington, which is better).
Have to say, I like Lexington style better. And their slaw is better by far. Slaw with mayonnaise is gross. 12/31/2013 12:11:44 PM |

^Never understood the love for Stamey's. I remember every year when I was younger my dad having a work convention in Greensboro and everybody would clamor about going to Stamey's. We'd always go and I never saw what the fuss was all about. Don't get me wrong...it wasn't bad by any stretch. But it didn't blow me away either.
