He may be gaining more than he gives up, particularly as it relates to money. Would depend on how much of his money he's moved offshore prior to sanctions (capital flight from Russia has been fairly severe over the years due to the state of affairs there). I think you're touching on a good point too with respect to constantly keeping Putin guessing at who is actually loyal to him. Increase the paranoia.
