Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Idle Time!

What Is It?
Essentially Folding@Home uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor.

The North Carolina State University Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the Top 100 teams in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the support of anyone who would like to help.

All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home on it with great results.

How can I Help?
Download and install the software appropriate for your OS (Windows/Linux/Mac). For dual/quad core computers, be sure you install the SMP client. It will get you and the NCSU team far more points than the traditional client. Whichever client you choose, we recommend running the Folding@Home client as a service. The client will run in the background without notification, and will release CPU resources as needed since it runs at the lowest priority. The NCSU Team Number is 59.

Visit the team homepage for detailed installation instructions

Windows Computers
We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions.

Mac and Linux Computers
There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the regular console clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.

Playstation 3
PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!

The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! Install as many clients as you can and watch your username/team progress at the stats page

^^I did last summer. I'm remembering now. Ok it's 2% and it's saying 150.88PPD. That doesn't seem right.

-Got the gpu client to start up (can't run it while remote because remote uses a virtual driver, and not the CUDA driver. But it crashes everytime saying "This application has failed to start because nvcuda.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." fah.com tells me to find the .dll and put it in the folder. Trying that.

-ok there's no nvcuda.dll on my computer. weird.

Ok got the gpu client running. In the GPU viewer under "Donor", it says "Core is not running now." Don't know what that means. My SMP is at 3% and still says 150ppd. Weird.

Ok, here are the basic steps to follow to get the GPU2 client running on nVidia hardware.

1) Install Geforce 177.35 (or newer) driver.
http://downloads.guru3d.com/GeForce-ForceWare-177.83-XP-(32-bit)-download-2027.html
http://downloads.guru3d.com/GeForce-ForceWare-177.83-Vista-(64-bit)-download-2025.html

2) Install CUDA driver from nVidia.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html

3) Install F@H GPU2 client.
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

4) Configure with Username, Team 59, and start folding!

^Thanks!

Just to get something straight. The cuda driver on the nvidia website is version 177.35. So you have to have BOTH an updated nvidia driver AND the CUDA driver? So as you posted, video driver 177.83, then CUDA 177.35 would work? It just seems like the CUDA driver overwrites whatever video driver you have.

got both smp and gpu clients running! ~11k ppd!!

^^so does that make any sense? I thought the CUDA driver was just an nvidia driver with CUDA implemented into it. I didn't think you needed two drivers because the CUDA driver just overwrites whatever you have.

The good news is I’ll probably hit 60k today - a new record for me.

The bad news is I’ll probably have to shut several of my computers down for a couple of days. I’m going on vacation and our house in on the market - several people will be walking through the house and I don’t want to have to explain why my office is so hot :>

If you haven’t noticed, I added a machine with 2 9800 gx2’s in it, each gpu core averaging about 5k per day (for an incremental 20k). More difficult than I expected getting all four cores to fold in Vista. I then removed my main machine from crunching to keep the heat down, and make it more responsive.

Stats servers are back up. We're down to 86, and we'll be down to 87 this afternoon. But it looks like we'll start gaining places back after that.

Sorry to not get back to this sooner but sometimes life gets busy.

To address the whole driver issue, you need the 177.xx (insert latest numbers) for the video card. Don't install the driver listed on the CUDA page, just the CUDA software package itself (second item on the list of three). The third thing (a software development kit or something) also isn't needed. The CUDA software works with any version of the drivers from 177.35 and forward.

Once these two packages are installed, reboot to make sure everything is activated properly and install the FAH GPU client. Configure as desired and watch the points accumulate.

Apparently their servers quit accepting WUs for a day or two. Fortunately they kept sending and your computer just stored the results and kept working on new ones, because my three turned in over 19,000 points in the last 24 hours.

EDIT: BTW, watch my ppd over the next few days as the 'average' catches up to my daily totals.

I'm not getting any credit for my WUs. I've got 4 running, finished a number of WUs and returned them to the server but no credit so far. Actually it says I haven't turned in a WU since July of last year.

It's only counting the WUs from the GPU client right now.

But... the GPU client is fast as hell.

I reconfigured the CPU clients hopefully they will work right.

when have you submitted anything other than GPU workunits? SMP workunits can take anywhere from 1-4 days to complete... are you sure you've actually completed some?

make sure you install http://fahmon.net/ so you can monitor your clients

I'm not using the multi-processor client. I'm using 3 instances of the single-threaded client. I set each installation to have its own machine ID so each one runs different jobs. The jobs take about 12 hours to complete per instance. I completed 12 WUs on the CPU clients in the past 2 days or so.

The GPU jobs take a couple hours.

synapse my error reads:
Quote :
""Folding@home Core Shutdown: MISSING_WORK_FILES""

Quote :
""CoreStatus = 1 (1)""

Quote :
""Folding@home has run into a serious error running the core. and will shutdown.""

same issues as this guy:... i ran 5.91 stable all day long, then i go to 6.22 -smp and it goes to crap.

definitely use the smp client. many more points

^ I'm assuming you already saw this: http://fahwiki.net/index.php/Error_0x0_and_0x1 and this: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=4396&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

Antivirus at all? I'll also assume you don't use NOD32.

Try the Deino version of the 6.22 client if you haven't yet. It's supposed to be more stable...less errors i guess

6.22 beta 2, it seems both cores (more-so the MPICH version)

i'm not saying everyone on this build has issues, but a LOT of people have reported it after having been fine on 5.91, hence this thread - http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=4764

Well the EUE error kicked back in after I got the WU submitted that I started the other day. At leat the work completed before I got the "F@H has run into a serious error" message. friggin rediculous....

Currently I am only folding on a 8800gtx and 4 regular clients and I am producing almost as much as when I had 2 smp and 15 regular clients. I need to just use the gpu2 more because all the regular clients dont even add up to one 8800gs and god only know how much power 17 computers draw compaired to 5.
