Basketball: 3 NCAA tournaments in 20 years, 0 conference championships, 0 NCAA wins
Football: 5 wins, 4, 7, 7, 4, 6, 5, 1, 0, 8, 9, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 6, 7, 7, 9

So, we join the SEC in 2012 and by 2032 we'll have a team that can consistently win 7 games but has lost three consecutive bowl games

We're a mediocre football school in a mediocre football conference. Put us in the NFL D-League and we're going to get raped every single week. 3-9 seasons from here to eternity. I'm saying that not as a pussy, but as a guy who doesn't care enough about football to watch a shit team get waxed by 7 great teams every season. We're a basketball school (I know, I know). Leaving the ACC would kill that. And, one could posit, that your arguments for increasing basketball success by joining a weaker conference would be analogous to the "pussies" who are "afraid" of moving to the SEC.

SC basketball is a joke though, and Spurrier has a lot more to do with their recent football success than just being a member of the SEC

seems like your pleas of the benefits of joining the SEC are predicated on our fanbase sitting through 15 years of shittiness before we get somewhere

You think Spurrier would have taken that job if they were in the ACC and still had a 50,000 seat stadium instead of an 80,000 one?

yeah i guess Ernie's talked me out of it. dammit.

honestly though, i think the ACC is in more trouble than it realizes, and it is not impervious to an ugly breakup. i think there's value to taking a guaranteed future over staying in the ACC.

I don't know the entirety of the ACC's financial situation, but from poking around on the site I linked to earlier, it looks like most programs are losing cash fast. State lost more than $1m last year. Moving to the SEC wouldn't solve that -- Auburn, for instance, lost nearly half a mil last year.

How about another point since you don't like that one, since we all hate UNC and Duke so much, you don't think it would be great to give them a big middle finger and leave the conference that they control? At least we would get more fair officiating in both sports.

So you all like the way the ACC is run by UNC alum John Swofford? A man that shouldn't have a job, especially if the conference loses schools and doesn't gain any.

Even Clemson and FSU bolt I doubt the ACC just sits around with a thumb up their ass. We'd probably start poaching some of the more respectable football schools out of the Big East (again).

if we lost FSU and Clemson, and brought in two basketball schools, ie UConn and some other non-football power, and put them in the Atlantic division, we'd be the preseason favorite to win the division on paper most seasons

Ahhh, as much as I despise UNC and Duke, I'd much rather play them multiple times a year than be in another conference. Even if their damn alum is the worst conference commissioner ever. I mean, I've thoroughly enjoyed whooping the heels in football the past 4 years. Would hate to lose that good times feelin'.

But either way, the point was made, the SEC ain't lookin at State. We aren't gonna have the choice. Nope, we're gonna be stuck scrambling trying to poach two decent schools from other leagues. UConn wouldn't be bad. Probably be tough to get anyone out of the Big East at this point though...

I agree the ACC is in more trouble than it realizes. It's too close to the SEC for it to escape unscathed if the SEC is seeking expansion which inherent in expanding is you're seeking greater power in the college sports landscape. Part of being Ireland is you're next to Britain which for a few hundred years was a world power. Even if you improve a bit, they're the behemoth that'll overwhelm you. We're Ireland and the SEC is Britain.

I'm afraid they're going to look northeast and we're going to be left with something nominally called the ACC but is more just an ACC/Big East football merger, which is going to be more of why everyone hates BC being in the league. Or the ACC could be the ones ransacked. Maryland's apparently broke. Wake and BC bring little to the table. Duke only matters in basketball otherwise they'd've already been jettisoned to Conference USA. Miami's only a big deal down there when they're winning which they haven't in awhile. GT have no fanbase. In a post-Clemson and FSU leaving scenario, you have to say everything would be on the table.

VPISU is the obvious choice for an SEC expansion from the ACC. There will be considerable resistance to add FSU from Florida and probably Georgia just because of recruiting.

^^ this.

VT or UMD from the ACC if the SEC wants an ACC school. It's about expanding tv contracts, no need for another florida or south carolina team.

see that's what i'm talking about, i don't think it has anything to do w/ getting into new tv markets, i think it has more to do with getting more overall fans, so that they can demand more from espn for national broadcasts, not so they can nickle and dime local network affiliates.

[Edited on August 13, 2011 at 8:17 PM. Reason : i could be wrong, it's not like i've had a chat w/ anyone from the SEC]

also, i don't know why any rational NCSU fan would want to go to the SEC. we would get the absolute shit kicked out of us in football and our basketball recruiting would definitely suffer from not being in the ACC and playing against UNC/Duke.

lose/lose.

Why the hell would any NC State fan want to leave the ACC? North Carolina is the ACC. Some people like to delude themselves into thinking that we are awesome in football and that a move to the SEC would not result in a severe ass kicking. I can't imagine any team north of Clemson leaving the conference.

Its not that we could do well in football. Its the idea that we would improve with all the sec money and lack of restrictions. Also, getting out of the duke/unc shadow would help us out A LOT in basketball.

So if we can't be as good as Duke and UNC, who are rivals since we started playing hoops, we should just pack up and move to a shittier conference? Sorry. Don't buy it.

Personally, I don't want to change conferences just so we can make a little more money and admit less qualified students.

State football/basketball revenue last year: $9.1m/$8.2m

These are the SEC schools without outrageous football budgets who State would most likely be competing with over the first few seasons

Ole Miss: $8.6m/$1m
Miss. St.: $2.6m/$2.1m
SC: $7.1m/$2m

All three lost more money in athletics overall than State did

http://www2.indystar.com/NCAA_financial_reports/

I'd say we're just fine in the ACC.

This might be the first time I have ever agreed with Earl. If Duke/UNC is the reason we cannot land a big name basketball coach as many say, would a move not help there?

Probably just wild internet speculation, but PP talking about NCSU being discussed tomorrow going to SEC.

State is not going to the SEC. On the other-hand, with A&M leaving and the SEC possibly wooing some more schools, the Big 12 would likely be gone. I wonder if that will lead to a feeding frenzy like last year, and if the ACC would be likely to try to expand.
