I swear if we blew off Haith and Marshall for this toolbag I might not attend another game.

This is total bullshit. Now if we hire him and he gets Ced to stay, AND Chris Wright to re-commit, then I'll change my mind.

Maybe this is one of those "get their expectations really low" ploys by Fowler after getting our hopes up with Calipari and Barnes, and He'll hire Haith or Marshall and we'll all be pumped as hell.

But those other two were too good to be true, this seems so bad that it has to be true...considering we are NC State and all.

if we start sucking again, i might just have to chain myself to a seat in the RBC Center to protest. i really think Marshall would be a good hire. i mean think about it, there might be some growing pains at first, but then who knows you'd have nowhere to go but up and he'd probably be able to relate to the players and recruits really well. doesn't he play the uptempo type of game that Pack fans have been longing for?

we have a good young athletic core that is for certain to come back next year:

McCauley
Fells
Costner
Ferguson
Grant

add in the three freshmen Davis (i really want to see what this kid can do), Werner, and Horner (provided they stay committed).

now while this is a very young team (Grant being the only one with significant pt), they have the tools to be good (notice i didn't say great, i'm not delusional).

now if Atsur, Ced and perhaps Brackman return, we would have a great deal of experience. i fully expect Grant to continue his great improvement that he had at the end of the season.

I'm pretty excited about the possibility of Kruger.

How you can look at that resume and say he sucks is beyond me.

I'd rather have a proven guy than take a risk on Haith.

Don't get me wrong, I'll support us if we go for Haith or Gillespie, but I'd prefer Kruger.

From Andy Katz article talking about Gillispie:
• Iona coach Jeff Ruland sent his resume to NC State, hoping the Wolfpack will look at another Iona coach. Remember, before coming to Raleigh, late Wolfpack coach Jim Valvano coached at Iona, where Ruland played for him.

From his Iona Bio:
For the past seven years as head coach, Ruland has compiled 114 wins - an average of almost 17 wins per season - and has guided the Gaels to two 20-win seasons, two MAAC Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

In 2002-2003, Ruland guided the Gaels to a win over No. 22 ranked North Carolina at Madison Square Garden. The win was Iona’s first versus a nationally ranked opponent since his playing days against Louisville.

His 2000-2001 squad became the first MAAC team in 11 years to successfully defend its league crown, finishing with a 22-11 record - the second straight 20-win season. In 1999-2000 - his second season - Ruland became the fastest coach in school history to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 1999-2000 team finished with a record of 20-11, including wins in 15 of the last 16 contests, to earn the trip to the Big Dance.

Gee, if only we could find a guy who made the NCAA tournament and had 20+ win seasons the last 5 years, top 20 recruiting classes year after year, maybe produce a little NBA talent, perhaps a coach of the year award in a prestigious conference... Damn, we'll never land a guy with those credentials.

herb was a winner with a lot of potential. of course, this guy probably screams and yells a lot and holds dunk practices, so he'll be welcomed no problem.

no, i know he has a lot of potential. he'd probably be ok. but the fans still want the guy i mentioned.

right now theres noone that will "unite the fanbase" anyway

Screaming and yelling a lot is different from getting fired up, and firing your team up.

I dont think Marshall is necessarily the right guy for the situation, but if our fans want him more than Kruger, why not give him a shot?

Hell....let the fans vote on who to get at this point...then...when he fucks up in 3 years...Fowler can say "I told you so you dumb bastards"

I don't think Ced would stay if we hired Phil Jackson. I'm gonna go ahead and prepare myself for a team with no big men.

No matter who we hire, Ced is going to have to really like them. Kruger cant really throw "nba" experience in there to help Ced, cause he really sucked up there.

^The thing about Marshall is, he's got decent players on his team right now, and they play in the Big South. Obviously, he's doing something right in recruiting. I think he might be able to meet Wright, ask for a fair chance to recruit him, and end up landing him. Ced might be another story with him, but I think this guy can recruit on the big level if he can recruit at winthrop.

Quote :
"At N.C. State, still no basketball coach
Pack's search has been hindered by tradition
By Barry Jacobs
April 17, 2006 E-Mail This Article

Printer-Friendly Version

North Carolina men's basketball fans recall the discomfort and anxiety, the sense of frustration and embarrassment as their hopes for a quick, impressive succession evaporated in the days following the 2000 retirement of Bill Guthridge. The very public search that saw the Tar Heels flirt with, and then fail to land, Roy Williams, was followed by a parade of prospects that ultimately yielded untested Matt Doherty.
The difficulties were unexpected for a program of such great tradition and stature.

A similar scenario is currently playing out at N.C. State, where the tradition and stature are of a lesser order.

N.C. State fans rightly crow about national championships in 1974 and 1983, about great players and extraordinary coaches, 10 ACC Tournament titles, and 22 NCAA appearances, including the last five years in a row. They can boast of a relatively new arena, the RBC Center, and a new basketball practice facility.

Yet there's no denying the Wolfpack plays in the shadow of its Triangle neighbors, Duke and North Carolina, whose programs are more consistently successful in the modern era and overall. That has complicated efforts to find a successor for Herb Sendek, a highly competent but uncharismatic sort who fled to Arizona State.

The similarities in the searches by UNC and N.C. State extend beyond their protracted nature. Both schools went after big names first.

For the Wolfpack, that meant taking a run at Texas coach Rick Barnes and Memphis mentor John Calipari, with a query along the way to Kentucky's Tubby Smith, a perennial target of those with overblown assessments of their standing in the basketball community. (Read, Virginia last year.)

Barnes was never a serious possibility. "Everybody in our business knew Rick wasn't going to take it," a head coach said. Barnes has prospered at Austin, a city rather more attractive than Raleigh. Texas and Kansas are the top programs in his conference, the Big 12, where there are no coaching giants. In the ACC everyone operates in the shadow of Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and now UNC's Williams, Hall of Fame-caliber coaches who show no sign of slipping from their perch atop the college profession.

Calipari apparently was intrigued by the NCSU job, a shot at working in the ACC, and the $2 million package dangled before him. But he ultimately passed after making a visit to campus.

Once Calipari was removed as an option, another similarity surfaced between the N.C. State and North Carolina searches. Beyond the premier picks, the parade of speculative prospects strikingly lacked a prominent African-American candidate. This may say something about collective imagination of the media's North Carolina contingent, but it also reflects reality at a school where a single African-American has ever served as a head coach in any sport.

"I don't think they'll call a black coach there," said an ACC basketball coach. Said another basketball head coach, "I don't think it's in the thought process at all."

Yet, what better way to differentiate the N.C. State program from its neighbors than to turn to a young, outgoing black head coach who plays an uptempo style? "If you want to try to stay as they are," said one of the ACC coaches, referring to UNC and Duke, "you're not going to beat them."

Sendek's departure, given his integrity, coaching acumen and general level of success, left coaches abuzz, much as did Doherty's ouster three years earlier amid talk players forced him out. "The best guy for the job, they ran out of there," an ACC head coach said of Sendek.

If part of Sendek's ultimate downfall was a playing style a bit too constricted to suit the taste of Wolfpack fans, why is there talk of Marquette's Tom Crean and West Virginia's John Beilein, who would bring much of the same?

And, if the search does focus on LSU's John Brady, a favorite object of speculation, the Wolfpack's return to its glory days may be a bit unpleasant.

"Everybody knows that when they had their greatest success they had to cheat," observed a rival ACC coach, recalling NCAA probations under Everett Case, Norm Sloan and Jim Valvano. Brady's reputation is hardly spotless.

Not to mention, Brady, a verbally abusive sort toward players, is not considered a sideline heavyweight. "I'd drive him to games," the ACC coach said, relishing the prospect of facing the Mississippi native.

Where the N.C. State and UNC searches differ is that, while Carolina stayed within the Dean Smith coaching "family," thus inherently limiting the parameters of its search, N.C. State made no such distinction. There is no focus on family, on former players now in the coaching ranks such as Eddie Biedenbach, Monte Towe, or Dereck Whittenburg.

So there is no excuse for failing to speak with Miami's Frank Haith, a North Carolina native interested in the job. Haith, who previously worked as an assistant under Barnes and Wake Forest's Dave Odom, has been remarkably successful in two years directing the Hurricanes. Moving within the league is not without precedent. Football coach Bill Tatum jumped from Maryland to North Carolina, his alma mater, during the mid-1950s, and those schools had far more common history than N.C. State and Miami. Tatum was a big name coach at the time, too.

And there is even less excuse for failing to speak with Whittenburg, a success at lowly Wagner and Fordham in seven years as a head coach. Whittenburg was a member of the Pack's 1983 national championship squad, returned to earn a degree in business administration in 1984, and served as an assistant coach at both his alma mater (1989-91) and at Georgia Tech (1995-99). Word has it he is very interested in the N.C. State position.

There's no shame in trying, and failing, to get a big-name coach to direct the Wolfpack. But once the search orchestrated by athletics director Lee Fowler moves to secondary candidates, there is an implicit message in who is mentioned and who is not, who is contacted and who is not.

That, too, is part of maintaining ties with Wolfpack tradition. Unfortunately, not the best points.

"
