From Doyel at CBS. Sad, but mostly true at this point:

Once upon a time Lee Fowler was a sympathetic figure. Fowler is the athletics director at North Carolina State, and while he didn't help keep coach Herb Sendek by telling his idiot fan base to sit down and shut up, he didn't exactly chase Sendek out of town, either. That's what Wolfpack fans did, chasing their coach all the way to Arizona State despite five straight NCAA Tournament appearances in Raleigh.

So Fowler was someone to be pitied. He was even more pitiable as he kept swinging for home runs and landing on his rear end. Rick Barnes and John Calipari turned down huge raises from the Wolfpack to accept smaller raises from Texas and Memphis. Poor Lee Fowler. Poor guy.

That was then.

Now?

Fowler's a clown.

Fowler is careening around college basketball, looking for someone -- anyone -- with enough name recognition to take this job. Fowler's goal isn't to win games next February. His goal is to win the press conference next week. Not good, Lee. Not good at all.

If the reports are right -- and when it comes to leaky N.C. State, the reports are usually right -- Fowler has made inquiries into LSU's John Brady, Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie and Wisconsin's Bo Ryan. None would fit at N.C. State. Or even close. But what the heck. N.C. State fans have heard of Bo Ryan! Hire him!

Look, Lee. Stop trying to hit a home run. N.C. State doesn't have that kind of power, and by now, you should know it.

Go for a guy from a smaller conference, preferably someone who doesn't have one of the best jobs in his conference and yet manages to win every year anyway. That is what will face N.C. State's next coach. So find someone who fits the profile. A working knowledge of the state of North Carolina would help, too. Find someone who has both of those, Fowler, and you've got your next coach.

Or you could give Mike Krzyzewski and Lute Olson a call. Surely one of them would say yes. This is, after all, N.C. State

fowler is running out of time though in my opinion, if a decision is not made by the end of this week this situation and the media feeding frenzy will go from bad to worse!

I agree, fowler seems to think he is in a corner that requires a "name" coach to get out of

i wouuld rather go for a young, mid-major fireball, or a guy like haith, sign the deal and move on, and avoid all this shitty press

and damn we have the worst PR in major college athletics, i am convinced of this more every day!

Our PR has always sucked.

They did the absolute worst job in the history of Public Relations when the Jimmy V shit went down. We could have avoided about 99.9% of the bad shit that we got if we had good PR at the time.

damn... for once i have to agree with doyel...

why do you think state's fan base is so stupid and immature?

i think it has to do with all the little, podunk counties whose students we have to take to fulfill quota since we're a state school... other schools can focus more overall relative achievement rather than achievement within a county

Long List Of Requirements For Next N.C. State Coach

POSTED: 12:33 pm EDT April 18, 2006
UPDATED: 12:33 pm EDT April 18, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Phil Jackson won't be Herb Sendek's replacement at North Carolina State, even if the current Los Angeles Lakers coach was interested.

The list of requirements for the job includes a minimum of five years of head coaching experience at an NCAA Division I school. So Jackson, who has won nine NBA championships, isn't eligible.

Neither are Seattle SuperSonics coach Nate McMillan or Detroit Pistons assistant Sidney Lowe, two former Wolfpack players who have no college coaching experience.

Sendek was 191-132 in 10 seasons with the Wolfpack, and he led them to appearances in the NCAA tournament during each of his final five seasons. That tied the late Jim Valvano for the best run in school history.

Sendek was introduced as the new coach at Arizona State on April 3.

According to Diane Baker, a human resources coordinator at N.C. State, any changes to the job qualifications must be submitted to her department for approval.

Some of the other requirements include a bachelor's degree, a commitment to following NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference rules, an ability to help players make progress toward their degrees and an entire section on salesmanship.

N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler is in his third week of looking for a new coach. According to various reports, Texas coach Rick Barnes and Memphis coach John Calipari both turned down offers of about $2 million a year.

Each used his flirtation with the Wolfpack to get a contract extension and a raise from his current school.

^i've heard that basically if fowler finds someone who doesn't fit the "five years experience" qualification, he can pretty much just say "yeah i need that rule changed" and that it wouldn't be a big deal. the college degree requirement is probably the more vital requirement in that list.

Anyone else think that Doyle article is total bullshit. How does he know Fowler is just looking for a coach that will make him look good at the press conference? How can he read Fowler's mind and say that he is only looking for name recognition in a coach?

What a douche of a writer that guy is.

havent seen it anywhere yet and i figure this is the best place to put it. here is david glenn's latest on the search, an AWESOME read:

http://html.wral.com/sh/blogger/2006/04/wolfpack-search-random-stuff.html

Quote :
"Random stuff on the North Carolina State coaching search:

If there was a machine that could measure the "activity" of a search, with "0" being the lowest score and "10" the highest, the first week and a half included a lot of "9" and "10" days. Ever since, there has been mostly "1" and "2" scores.

Late this afternoon (Tuesday), for the first time in a week, my personal "buzz" meter is up -- and rising quickly. Coaches are calling. My own NCSU sources are calling. My phone won't stop ringing. This pattern almost always is followed by interesting news. I'm not completely sure what it is yet, but stay tuned. ...

Everyone agrees that the flow of information on the N.C. State coaching search has slowed to a trickle ever since Rick Barnes of Texas and John Calipari of Memphis turned down the job. Everyone also agrees that NCSU athletic director Lee Fowler has kept things very close to the vest for the past seven days.

There are several explanations for this phenomenon. First, State officials didn't mind at all that the world knew they were pursuing Barnes. Wolfpack fans wanted to know that their representatives were aiming high, and media members could see that the school was making a very serious ($2 million/year) financial commitment to the long-term future of the program.

The Calipari pursuit wasn't intended to be played out in public, but the wonders of flight tracking, along with some excellent reporting by a handful of media members, ultimately made that an impossibility. From the moment of Calipari's "no," of course, State officials had every reason to go underground with their search in an attempt to avoid a third public rejection.

The other reason is money. Remember, the Wolfpack's contract offers to Barnes and Calipari included "retention bonuses" -- in Barnes' case, they would have been worth $5 million -- that would have been earned only if the hired coach stayed at NCSU for a specific (e.g., eight or 10) number of years. That extra money was not going to come from the athletic department. It had to be raised ahead of time, mainly through contributions from 10-12 prominent boosters, and placed in a trust fund of sorts that would mature to the designated amount by the designated date.

"When you ask people for that kind of money," one NCSU official said, "you'd better be ready with a pretty good explanation of what you're going to do with that money."

Those 10-12 boosters all received phone calls, and they turned around and told some of their close friends what was happening, and they turned around and told their close friends, etc. Unless the Wolfpack plans a similar contract offer to one of its remaining candidates, that chain of communication won't be necessary, so there won't be nearly as many leaks. ...

While the NCSU job comes with many specific requirements, including five years of Division I head coaching experience and a four-year college degree, it's better to think of those as guidelines rather than absolute necessities.

According to multiple sources at State, any of the requirements can be waived, although some are far more likely to get exceptions than others. A waiver of the four-year degree requirement, for example, wouldn't be easy to push through university channels. The five-year coaching rule, on the other hand, could be overcome easily if the Wolfpack found an appropriate candidate who didn't meet that criterion.

(Side note: Herb Sendek had only three years of head coaching experience when NCSU hired him away from Miami-Ohio in 1996, although it's not clear if the same job requirements were in place at State 10 years ago.)

Speaking of exceptions, keep this in mind: UNC system rules, which apply to UNC, NCSU and each of the other public universities in the state-wide system, specifically prevent a school from guaranteeing for a coach the supplementary income he receives from the school's booster club. Yet UNC asked for and received an exception to that rule in the case of Roy Williams, who had such a guarantee at Kansas, so the Tar Heels could match the terms of Williams' deal with the Jayhawks. ...

Much has been made of John Calipari's doubts about State's ability to compete successfully against Duke and UNC on a regular basis, but there was far more to those sentiments than simply a coach who was afraid to go head-to-head with Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams.

State officials said that, during their discussions with Calipari, he asked many questions that fell into the domain of the school's compliance director, admissions office and academic support staff. During his brief trip to Raleigh, he even asked to meet with some of those people.

One of the things that alarmed Calipari was the significant difference between UNC-system academic requirements and those of the NCAA. At Memphis, generally speaking, the coaching staff could sign and enroll anyone who met basic (GPA, SAT) NCAA minimums. The Tigers even could sign non-qualifiers, who under NCAA rules must sit out a year and meet certain academic guidelines during that year before becoming eligible during their second year on campus, at the earliest.

State abides by the ACC rule against non-qualifiers, and the school (as part of the UNC system) also has several requirements that are higher than those of the NCAA. For example, starting this fall, all UNC-system schools will require at least two units of foreign language. (The NCAA requires none.) UNC-system schools also now require four units of math and three of science. The NCAA requires only two math and two science units. Any coach in America will tell you that those differences mean a lot. ...

According to multiple sources in the coaching community, the following coaches -- or, in some cases, their representatives -- received very early preliminary inquiries from intermediaries claiming to be working on NCSU's behalf but ultimately said they were not interested in further discussing the Wolfpack job at the time: Tom Crean (Marquette), Mark Few (Gonzaga), Tom Izzo (Michigan State), Mike Montgomery (Golden State Warriors), Rick Pitino (Louisville), Lorenzo Romar (Washington), Tubby Smith (Kentucky) and Jay Wright (Villanova).

More recently, the following coaches joined that list: Tim Floyd (Southern Cal), Billy Gillispie (Texas A&M) and Bo Ryan (Wisconsin). Keep in mind: These were not job offers, just unofficial, preliminary inquiries.

When presented with the information above, a high-ranking N.C. State official said the list was an accurate representation of the scope of the Wolfpack's search and that "almost" all of the names on the list matched his information. However, he also said that there have been "one or two" cases where people claiming to be acting on NCSU's behalf have contacted coaches who in fact were not on the Wolfpack's list. ...

During the course of the search, more than a dozen N.C. State officials (current/former members of the athletic department, Wolfpack Club board of directors, UNC System Board of Governors, NCSU board of trustees, etc.) have corresponded with me, some on a frequent basis. Many of them literally have laughed at some of the names that have been mentioned in association with the Wolfpack job, but one name they said did pop up was that of former UNC coach Matt Doherty.

"His name came up in a brain-storming session. That's all," one source said. "I haven't heard his name since. Wouldn't that have been something?"

Doherty, now at Florida Atlantic, recently interviewed for the job at Southern Methodist. He was 15-13 in his first season at FAU, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. SMU is a member of Conference USA, which is several rungs up from the Atlantic Sun in the hierarchy of Division I basketball leagues. ...

According to a source at Memphis, John Calipari and his assistants arrived at such a late hour on April 10 for their secretive visit to Raleigh that they didn't have time for a sit-down dinner. They did, however, stop at Dunkin' Donuts. ...

Among the many coaches who inquired (either themselves or through intermediaries) about the NCSU job but were rebuffed were Larry Eustachy (Southern Miss), Jeff Ruland (Iona) and a bevy of Division I assistants. ..."

There are a lot of people saying this....and maybe Glenn's blog is pertaining to this?

I wouldn't expect anything of it. Probably just still talking to Barnes getting his info on who he'd recommend.... but according to some...apparently there is semi-credibility to the rumor

"Is the Coaching Wave About to Crest? (5:00 PM)

IT IS NUTS TODAY!!!! SOMETHING IS GOING ON?!?!?!?!!?!?

This morning, Jeff asked you to hold off on the growing criticisms of Lee Fowler that were based largely on the fans frustration of having no apparent movement on the coaching search.

After a week+ of nothingness related to the NC State coaching search, we started experiencing a significant amount of “chatter” late yesterday afternoon that has continued into today. We have complimented Dave Glenn’s coverage of State’s search and our interest was sparked to see his update today included a very similar experience to ours:

If there was a machine that could measure the “activity” of a search, with “0? being the lowest score and “10? the highest, the first week and a half included a lot of “9? and “10? days. Ever since, there has been mostly “1? and “2? scores.

Late this afternoon (Tuesday), for the first time in a week, my personal “buzz” meter is up — and rising quickly. Coaches are calling. My own NCSU sources are calling. My phone won’t stop ringing. This pattern almost always is followed by interesting news. I’m not completely sure what it is yet, but stay tuned. …

We have a lot of thoughts about a lot of things right now. BUT, we believe it would be irresponsible and detrimental for us to share &/or speculate on some recent developments. We are not looking to “scoop” right now; our goal is to see what is best for NC State naturally evolve. We think that it is best for NC State for a lot of people to hold tight and be quiet.

We think that every reason in the world exists for the world to be introduced to NC State ’s new basketball coach before the weekend rolls around. We hope that we are right.

5:00 PM Update
We understand the frustration from Wolfpackers who aren’t getting any specific information. The amount of false information out there is killing us too!!!

Dave Glenn, who has been the most credible of all media sources during this search, updated his blog late this afternoon with the following:

(1) The search has taken a dramatic new turn, and I will be writing about it at some point in the next 36 hours.

(2) Frank Haith and several others mentioned as targets haven’t been contacted by anyone from NCSU in the last two weeks. Like many others, they were contacted by intermediaries at the beginning of the search, but nothing of substance has happened with them since.

(3) Sean Miller, Bobby Lutz, Jeff Ruland, Mike Jarvis, Monte Towe, Kevin Stallings, Geno Auriemma and Bob Knight are not factors in this search right now, and I’ll be extremely surprised if they ever enter into the picture. I realize some of you were joking with these.

FWIW, we concur and re-emphasize Glenn’s comments.

We will try to have an update late tonight where we try to break down some news that is out there."

Nah...I just made a big post this morning with rumors with names and he claimed I took it off of Packpride. Now packpride comes out with a post about an hour ago listing half of the rumors I said this morning...one of them being about Rick Barnes being mentioned again which I left out of my post because I didn't want to get laughed off the site...and WolfMiami brings it over here acting like he "heard a rumor" when he just took it off of Packpride.

It's pretty funny actually.
