hey, dude......I GET ALL MY SHIT FROM PACKPRIDE, and the other sites I listed

you act as if you have some smoking gun, or are gonna hurt my rep, I am in law school on the other side of the mississippi, I have no inside sources "AT ALL" i have not been to raleigh since last summer, and my friends have a total of about negative clout around that athletic department

you just claimed that you had a guy, and it just gets annoying to keep hearing that, everybody has a "guy" that is what got us into all of the trouble with Cal/Barnes....a bunch of people with "guys" who had definite answers to questions that were not answerable!

that shit was on packpride around the time you posted your scoop, sorry if i hurt your feelings, i was not really even trying to be a dick, you just went out of your way to say it was "NOT" from packpride premie, when at the same time, you could pretty much piece that info together on premie, chat, and from multiple james comments, all i was saying!

Have a fucking cookie. I'm in law school down in South Carolina. I haven't been to Raleigh since the Virginia Tech game in August. So I met some people who knew people during my 4 years in Raleigh...that's about it...I guess I just got lucky, hung around the right people, got the rights jobs in college...whatever. My information was different from packprides this morning because I actually put names out there (names that came out later today). The reason why I made it a point to differentiate my stuff from packpride's is because I know dolts like you would just say "you just got that from packpride"....and you said it anyway. So fuck it really.

I've never paraded my info around here like it's a big fucking deal (like john kruk saying you could suspend me if I was wrong). I'll try and preface it sometimes by saying that "this guy has never steered me wrong" or some shit like that. Oh well.

seriously though who threw out Geno Auriemma's name. i had never heard that his name was being mentioned.

while i think he's a good coach, i don't know if he could adjust to the men's game, plus think about all the heckling oppurtunities that would arise.

"Hey go back to coaching women's basketball!"

-or-

"Hey look it's that women's basketball coach, wait are we playing a women's team?" "Nope Steve, we're playing State, but they're practically a women's team"

Throwing names around like Tom Izzo and shit like "Barnes may be back in play" is doing nothing but teasing State fans that will lead to torture when we hire a Lon Kruger or, better yet, Larry fucking Shyatt. Ive fully prepared myself for a letdown for the ages, but this blind optimism is doing nothing to keep that going.

Don't kid yourself.

I would guess our chances with Barnes are less than 1 in 100.

It is pretty interesting that/if we're still talking to him. He still hasn't signed an extension

"12:20 am Update
What a day! It was easily the most frenzied day that we have experienced since Calipari’s “no” one week ago. That has got to mean something, doesn’t it?

A few breakdowns of what we see going on out there:

*

We start with the “No” candidates and work ourselves bakwards. We start with the info behind the “no’s” that we have heard and hopefuly it gets us asking some relevant questions. This is where it gets interesting because after we discuss the candidates that have no’s attached to them, there isn’t much left!
*

We always thought that Frank Haith was a legitimate fallback position for the Wolfpack. We were wrong. The Wolfpacker reported today that Frank Haith is not in the mix. From everything that we have heard, this is true. Don’t believe the talk that Frank didn’t get connected to some boosters close to the search, however. He did. But, it didn’t get any further than that. Haith has been out of pocket for almost the last couple of weeks and has been hard to reach. He returned to Miami, and his contract extension (thank you, NC State) and spoke with some very strong wording that he is NOT a candidate for the NC State coaching job.
*

Lon Kruger wasn’t going to be the easiest sell in the world to Wolfpack fans. His $2.3 million buyout ultimately made him impossible to sell.
*

We have it on what we think is pretty good authority that Gregg Marshall and Dereck Whittenburg are not on the Wolfpack’s list (we may live to eat these words).
*

Some people have commented that the NBA regular season ended tonight. PJ Carlisemo (San Antonio Spurs) was discussed about a week ago. Additionally, we know that Lee Fowler was very high on Mike Montgomery (Golden State Warriors) at the very beginning of the search (and we about blew up the blog when we heard Montgomery’s name mentioned so early in the process). But, both PJ and Montgomery have gone on public record stating that they are not interested in any college coaching jobs since the speculation surfaced . Of course, we know how much to believe the “public record”…but, the lies feel different in the NBA. It doesn’t feel as though there is real juice behind these names.
*

We’ve seen increased speculation on Carlisemo the last couple of days…but, Carlisemo’s Spurs are getting ready to defend their NBA Title and could be playing through June. If PJ wasn’t going to leave the team prior to the end of the regular season, he sure as hell isn’t suddenly leaving for the playoffs. What would be the value of staying an extra (worthless) week in the regular season?
*

So, let’s look at this. Realistically, who are we left with? WHO? There doesn’t really seem to be a “B List” candidate on which we are hearing anything viable. Sure, there could be a candidate that rises out of nowhere - Dennis Felton? Kevin Stallings? John Pelphrey? - but we can’t imagine how there is a name in play out there that wouldn’t trip an alarm.
*

Let’s look at Pack Pride for a second for some guidance. In our opinion, PP has had excellent coverage during this process. We know how this works and we know that the more connected NC State ‘media’ is a great gauge of where the wind may be blowing. Over the last week, PP has picked up on wind blowing in a different direction literally every single day. They have featured and “heard things” on Steve Lavin, John Brady, Billy Gillispie, Mike Brey, Lon Kruger, Chris Lowery, Gregg Marshall, and Dereck Whittenburg over the last week. This doesn’t make any sense. There is no way that this “search” has blown in that many directions…each conveniently on a new day.
*

We aren’t saying that Pack Pride doesn’t make any sense. We are saying that all of these different names don’t make any sense - particularly since we have heard that the two most recent “hot names” are not true candidates. There has to be a reason behind all of the mixed signals?!
*

So…here is our thought — there is something fishy going on (again). Gregg Marshall, Dereck Whittenburg, Frank Haith, and most of the other coaches in this tier could have been hired 5 minutes after Calipari said no. Every day that passes is an important day in the recruiting evaluation period that NC State needs a coach. There is NO WAY that Lee Fowler can waltz Whittenburg (et al) into a press conferece on day 20 of the search and introduce a guy that he could have had 11 days earlier and 2 minutes after Calipari said no. No way that this can happen.
*

The alternatives are simple: (1) Lee Fowler is the most incompetent AD in America, or (2) there is something bigger and more complex going on here (and it has to break soon).
*

Until we have final confirmation with the ultimate hire in this process, we refuse to believe that Fowler is as incomptent as some are labeling him in the middle of this unfinished process. Maybe we are being uber-optimistic…but, we have reason to believe that there is more than meets the eye. When you carve away all of the smoke, there is nothing left. Nothing. That doesn’t make any sense. In fact, it (oddly) makes us feel better about what it going on because State would have easily hired a “final stage” candidate by now if something bigger wasn’t going on.
*

There have been a lot of other rumors rise in the last 48 hours; many of which we can rationalize and reason in ways that get us very excited (again) about what might happen in Raleigh. But, it is not prudent for us to speculate on them at this time. If they pan out…you will know it. If they don’t, we will debrief on it in the future.
*

That is all we are going to say right now. In the end, it may end up being a “fallback type candidate”. But, right now, we think that there is reason to have more hope than most fans have had since the Calipari debacle.
*

The Wolfpacker was reporting on their message boards today that a couple of coaches that had informal contact with NC State during this process have been told that State’s job is no longer vacant. When you add that to the intensification of “chatter” that we have experienced in the last 36 hours, we think that every reason in the world exists for the world to be introduced to NC State ’s new basketball coach before the weekend rolls around. We hope that we are right."

from the wolfpacker.com:

"What is going on with the NC State coaching search? The buzz Wednesday was that an announcement could be coming soon on who the new head coach would be, but the problem is finding out who would be the leading candidate to support this claim.

Frank Haith does not appear to be a candidate.
One coach that appears to not be on NC State's list is Miami's Frank Haith, who told The Wolfpacker Wednesday that he was "not involved and I have never been a candidate." Haith had been mentioned as a potential front-runner for the job and had always been a favorite of the local media.

However, what was interesting was in ESPN's Andy Katz's latest column, he reports that Winthrop's Gregg Marshall understood the job was going to Haith.

Clearly there are indications behind the scenes to suggest that something is developing. Winston-Salem Journal NC State beat writer John DeLong reportedly suggested on the Primetime with the Packman radio show that a hire would be made in the next two days.

Dave Glenn of the ACC Area Sports Journal said late Wednesday that there has been a "dramatic change of events" in the search that he could talk about in the next 36 hours. Glenn also reported that Haith does not appear to be a candidate. Other coaches that Glenn would be surprised if they were involved in the search include: Sean Miller, Bobby Lutz, Jeff Ruland, Mike Jarvis, Monte Towe, Kevin Stallings, Geno Auriemma and Bob Knight.

Strong rumors Wednesday night surrounded Fordham head coach Dereck Whittenberg, an NC State alum from the 1983 NCAA Championship team. The Charlotte Observer even alluded to a rumor that The Wolfpacker had heard as well, that Fowler and Whittenberg could be meeting with each other. However, as of Wednesday Whittenberg had not been contacted by NC State.

Other names that have been popping up included UNLV's Lon Kruger, who has been the subject of rumors since Sunday, and former UCLA head coach Steve Lavin. Kruger however has a very expensive buyout. There have been reports that it would cost an additional $2.3 million to get Kruger, but The Wolfpacker has also heard that number could be closer to $1.5 million.

It is unclear if Lavin has an interest in the job. There are rumors that he does, but he is also very happy with current job at ESPN as a basketball analyst. The Raleigh News and Observer suggest that Lavin could be a major candidate. It should be noted that Katz reported Wednesday that Lavin has not talked with NC State officials about the job, nor has Winthrop's Marshall.

WRAL reported that perhaps West Virginia's John Beilein could be emerging as a candidate. It would make sense for Beilein to want to leave Morgantown in the face of a major rebuilding project next fall, but his buyout is believed to be around $3 million. "

Did anyone hear those idiots on 850 yesterday supporting the hiring of Doh? One guy called in and I thought he was joking, then Adam told him he was retarded basically then he argued with him.

Well then the next guy that supported him sounded like he hated state fans. Both were probably holes.

StateFans have updated their blog

Quote :
"WHY NOW? (11:30am Coaching Update)

Last night we updated you on some of the credibile information in the high volume of things that we have been hearing.

As we mentioned last night, The Wolfpacker reported on their message boards that a couple of coaches that had informal contact with NC State during this process have been told that State’s job is no longer vacant. We have re-confirmed this with more of the coaching names now. When you add this to the intensification of “chatter” that of the last 48 hours, then obviously reasons exist to believe that the coaching search is coming to an end. We would hope before the weekend.

We think that the KEY QUESTION that needs to be analyzed is - WHY NOW?

This is where we think that you will find your answer to who NC State’s next coach is going to be?

Yesterday, the name Dereck Whittenburg rose to the surface. Although we like Whitt, and we think that if Whitt continues to succeed as he has been succeeding that he will one day be a very strong candidate for the job, we can’t imagine Whitt getting hired as the head coach in the next couple of days. Why would we have waited? Why NOW?

There is NO WAY that Lee Fowler can waltz Whittenburg into a press conferece on day 20 of the search and introduce a guy that he could have had 11 days earlier and 2 minutes after Calipari said no. No way that this can happen. If this happens, then Lee Fowler would be the most incompetent AD in America. We’ve had our criticisms of Fowler, but we don’t think that he could misunderstand this process that poorly.

So…WHY NOW?

We have two theories that have been backed up with some smoke this week that deserve consideration:

(1) Rick Barnes still in play.
Is this one getting old? Of course, we wanted to believe this when we heard a few times through the week. It made some sense when you consider that:

*

(a) Barnes hasn’t reportedly signed his new contract at UT
*

(b) Texas’ annual basketball awards dinner was earlier this week (and there were rumors that Rick wanted to still be his kids coach on that night,
*

(c) Pack Pride reported yesterday that the name that they had heard the most about in the last 24 hours was Barnes.
*

(d) People turned their attention to John Calipari’s candidacy on the weekend that it was reported (by Caulton Tudor on Friday) that Barnes had not yet said no to NC State. It was reported that Barnes was going to sign his new contract in Austin, but Wolfpackers dropped the focus on Barnes after the contract announcement and while State was obviously pursuing Calipari.

As ‘dramatic’ as this alternative may be (dovetailing nicely with Dave Glenn’s blog entry yesterday), it may not be necessarily plausible. The later in the week that we get from Monday night’s Texas Basketball Banquet, the less likely the Barnes scenario has legs.

(2) Mike Montgomery of the Golden State Warriors
We told you very early in the search that Lee Fowler was very high on Mike Montgomery. At the time, we didn’t necessarily think that Montgomery’s name should have been discussed ahead of Barnes and Calipari…but, after making a play for Barnes/Calipari then why not re-examine where Montgomery fits compared to other candidates?

A case can definitely be made that Montgomery has the best resume of any candidate whom State has interviewed:

*

he is one of only six college coaches in to have been honored with the John R. Wooden “Legends of Coaching” Lifetime Achievement Award, joining Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, Lute Olson, Denny Crum and Roy Williams.
*

Montgomery compiled an impressive 547-244 (.692) overall record in 18 years at Stanford (1986-2004) and eight seasons at the University of Montana (1978-1986). He boasts an even more impressive 25 winning seasons in his 26 years as a head coach at both Stanford and Montana.

11:20am (continued) Additionally, Les Robinson has a nice relationship with Montgomery and even suggested Montgomery to NC State ten years ago as his replacement. At the time, Montgomery was firmly entrenched in building a national power at Stanford and wasn’t a fit for the move.

Not only did the NBA regular season end last night, but Golden State’s entire season ended as well.

Working against this theory is that Montgomery and Golden State officials have publicly rebuffed the idea that Montgomery is returning to the college game and have stated that he will be back with Golden State.

WHY NOW?

Any name that is out there that has been linked to the job - Lon Kruger, Mike Brey, Gregg Marshall, Dereck Whittenburg, Steve Lavin, Billy Gillispie, etc, etc - could/should have been hired the day after Calipari said no. If not immediately after the Cal situation, then at least a couple of days after the Cal situation and BEFORE this week’s recruiting evaluation period began.

11:30am (continued) There has to be a reason why this is happening NOW as opposed to a week earlier. That reason is either (1) Lee Fowler’s laziness and incompetence or (2) something more strategic like our two options in this piece. We think that it has to be #2."

yeah everything im seeing points to MM as well

terrific hire if true.

i think fowler/murphy flew up to see whitt though. perhaps to ask him to come back and be an assistant again? not sure why he'd want that unless we promised him the HC position when MM retired though.

hopefully more stuff will leak soon
