That was also talked about. He's a definite West-Coast guy.... but honestly, NC State is the best position open right now.

He's also 57 years old, I believe.

Apparently, he's interested. We'll see

except that beilein has final four potential and actually runs the offense much better then herb does to the point where people actually call it fun and exciting

look people didn't want herb fired cause of his offense but cause of his lack of results, beilein is the most realistic hire that can deliver them

[Edited on April 3, 2006 at 1:14 AM. Reason : o yea beilein makes better in game adjustments too]

He'll probably step down / be fired this season from Golden State

He never did anything in the NBA

Yes, but his credentials are what he did at Stanford (If you weren't aware he was thier coach).

The NBA thing was a disaster

^^Yeah I didnt know who he was at all until I googled. I put 2 and 2 together.

also...

The only thing different between Herb and Beilein might be that Beilein is a better motivator.

His offense sucks too, dont mistake it. Everyone I know that is a WVU fan gets pissed cause they live and die by the 3.

Wouldnt you know it???????????????????????????????????????????? WE DID TOO.

he tried the NBA waters and its not working out so well like it happens with a lot of great college coaches...hopefully he'll come back to coach in college where he belongs and I would love it to be NC State

here's some of Mike Montgomery's college coaching background per his nba.com profile

Quote :
"Mike Montgomery was named head coach of the Golden State Warriors on May 21, 2004. Prior to joining the Warriors, Montgomery built one of the nation’s top collegiate basketball programs at Stanford, leading the Cardinal to 16 post-season tournament appearances during his 18-year tenure, including trips to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last 10 seasons.
Montgomery, 57, was honored as Pac-10 Coach of the Year on four occasions, including the 2003-04 season when he guided Stanford to an impressive 30-2 record, highlighted by a 26-game winning streak and the school's 10th consecutive 20-plus win season. This past season, he was also named Coach of the Year by Sports Illustrated and Basketball Times, as well as NABC District-14 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District-9 Coach of the Year.

Overall, the Cal State Long Beach alum posted a 393-167 (.702) ledger during his time at Stanford. Additionally, seven players who schooled under Montgomery on the Palo Alto, CA campus were first-round NBA draft picks.

Among his many accomplishments on the collegiate level, Montgomery was honored with the 2004 John R. Wooden “Legends of Coaching” Lifetime Achievement Award. He became the sixth collegiate coach to earn the distinguished honor, joining an impressive list that includes Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, Lute Olson, Denny Crum and Roy Williams.

Montgomery compiled an impressive 547-244 (.692) overall record in 18 years at Stanford (1986-2004) and eight seasons at the University of Montana (1978-1986). He boasts an even more impressive 25 winning seasons in his 26 years as a head coach at both Stanford and Montana. Montgomery was named head men's basketball coach at Stanford University April 25, 1986.

His teams made it 18 teams into postseason play in the last 20 years (1985-04), 12 times advancing to the NCAA Tournament (1988-89, 1991-92, 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04 seasons), six times his teams received bids to the NIT (1984-85, 1985-86, 1987-88, 1989-90, 1990-91, 1993-94), and his Cardinal team won it all in the 1991 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). During the 1997-98 season, Stanford advanced to the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio.

He made his third appearance along the USA Basketball sidelines in 2002 when he was named an assistant on George Karl's USA World Championship Team staff.

He is a native of Long Beach, California and a 1968 graduate of Cal State Long Beach, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education. Montgomery continued his education at Colorado State University. He received his Masters Degree from Colorado State in physical education in 1976. Montgomery was born on February 27, 1947. In 2002, Montgomery was named to the Long Beach State Hall of Fame. Montgomery is married. He and his wife, Sarah, have two children, John, age 20, and Anne, age 18. The family resides in Menlo Park.

Montgomery would be absolutely great. No one on that list got me super-excited except for him.

1) He's not leaving for the pro's, obviously
2) He's a proven winner at freaking STANFORD...which means he can handle ACC academics
3) He's clean, obviously (see: Stanford)
4) He's a well known name... so recruiting.....
5) Runs a wide-open offense... great defense
6) NBA knowledge / recruiting

I think he'd be an amazing hire. If this is all true and we really are talking to him... only Calipari, Pearl, or Wright would change my mind.

For those who like to rag on me, notice I didn't say Barnes. Luigi, you listening

Sounds like the only negative for him would be age. I dont give a fuck though cause he doesnt look 57 and I think he'd be damn good. Stanford was a powerhouse while he was there for a few years, and had some heartbreaking losses in the NCAA from what I remember.....better than getting blown out in the second round.

I just hope if it came down to it and he became our #1 and wanted it, we could appease him with salary.

Like I said, NC State is the best position open, and he's obviously not staying in the NBA. Only OU could beat us at a bidding war..... and OU isn't exactly a great place to live or a basketball haven

I've heard a lot of people mention Haith... I don't know why, really?

He's had an exceptional player that he piggybacked into a decent season, and he's nothing special.

The ACC wouldn't allow it, but I wouldn't want it. I'd rather have Herb to tell you teh truth

If we go for up-and-comers, to me, it's a toss-up between Marshall and Gillespie.

I'd probably rather have Marshall, but Gillespie would probably get it

I'm fairly confident we're coming away with Montgomery if we can't get Barnes.

I've had this feeling all day.

It just makes too much sense.

NC State is easily the best job available, and he is probably the most attractive option.

Besides, he's already made a shit load of money in Golden State so he wouldnt be as pricey as Barnes I wouldnt think.

It's not like Montgomery needs to be lured away from anything...

Supposedly, one of the mods on Statefans is going to post an early list.

Hopefully Montgomery will be on it.... I'm not trying to get everyones hopes up. Like I said, someone I know that gets 15th hand info has said we have contacted him and he is reciprocating interest

Gillespie has been poised to leave.... if we want him, he'll take it. I'll guarantee it.

I'm not sure about Turgeon. Marshall is more of a wide-open offense that draws pure athletes. From what I understand, Turgeon is more precision. Not sure that's what State needs.

Marshall would be a huge gamble, but he's done a fantastic job at Winthrop in a short timespan. It'll be interesting to see if he gets any real consideration without the bigtime experience

wow, how come I haven't heard much on him before this. i like what i hear especially the winning percentage.

we have to go with a proven winner, and a big time coach to compete with Godzilla and MechaGodzilla 20 miles down the road.

BARNES NOT INTERESTED:

Quote :
"Texas' Rick Barnes of Hickory, one of the coaches atop N.C. State fans' wish list, told the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman on Sunday that he is not looking to leave Texas and is happy there. Barnes also said last month before facing N.C. State in the NCAA tournament in Dallas that he was not interested in coaching in the ACC.

"I feel the same as I felt when I was asked that question in Dallas," Barnes said Sunday, according to the Austin paper's Web site. "I have one of the best jobs in the country. I've got no other thoughts about (N.C. State).""
