I'm not saying he is.

He had a great program at Stanford... somewhere that I think is very very hard to win at given thier academics. That's why Notre Dame hired Willingham. If he can win with Stanford's academics, he can win at Notre Dame with thier academics. (Or so they thought)

I don't know if he can duplicate that here, or even be better... but he had a great program there

that is one of the major reasons we should push to get him, recruiting power to at least compete with the other tobacco road schools.

Yeah...I was saying Roy Williams doesn't have to be the best coach in the world to win a NC considering he gets the best of the best to come play for him.

It doesnt matter who the next coach is. People will automatically hate him because he wasn't their choice.

im glad to hear that you want Wright too, PackBacker, i would've thought you were a Rick Barnes guy. I know we have an extremely slight chance to land Wright, but man if we did.......

History tells me we're gonna hire an "up and comer"

For some reason, I get the feeling that our administration is going to swing for the fences to unite this fanbase.

Rick Barnes is a great coach. So is Calipari, Wright, etc. Rick Barnes would be on my short list.... and is a much more natural fit, but I think Wright or Calipari would give us a better chance for a national championship. Wright, I think, is better than Calipari.

I'd die to have either, but If I'm being choosy... there's not many I'd pick over Wright short of K or Roy

I dont think Barnes should leave Texas....but if he did...this COULD be a better job for him for one reason aside from the fact that he's from NC.

If he wins a national championship at Texas...w00t w00t everyone will forget about it in a year cause texas is football.

If he wins a national championship at NC State...he's gonna be a god. Hands down, no questions, media might even hype the hell out of it, and he will be untouchable. Just look at what our fans think about the 74 and 83 teams.

The only problem with that is the flipside, where if he flops and keeps us in a state of mediocrity, he will end up on the curb and probably be crucified by our fans.

the only coach i can think of that would get me really, really upset if we were to hire would be Larranaga. Im not saying he's a bad coach, but its just too "flavor of the month" for me

I don't think you have to worry about that

If the first tier doesn't work out, we'll probably go with Gillespie, Marshall, or Haith (he seems to be popular...although I just dont see it)

I laugh every time someone mentions nate mcmillan. like anyone is gonna give up 5 million a year at a job where he doesn't have to do anything but coach (ie. recruit against k and roy).

Thats the thing.

A coach that does extremely well will become a God.

Extremely well being beating Duke and UNC consistently.

Which is like winning the NC game every year.

On a side note: I love Texas Hold 'em as much as the next guy, but the poker metaphors have to go.

That should be so appealing to a coach looking to take this job.

Seriously, we could only win 14 games or so next year and lose in the 1st round of the NCAA Tourney, but so long as we would at least split the series against UNC and give Duke a good run for their money, the guy would get more praise than Herb got this past year by keeping us in the Top 25, winning over 20, and going to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney.

Not that this is really important, but I found it interesting. My dad called me and said Monty Towe was in my parent's store in Nashville on his way back to New Orleans from the Final Four.

My dad told him that his son goes to NC State and wanted to know what he thought about the coaching situation. Basically what Monty said was that he would of course love to get an opportunity to coach here (although it's unlikely).

My dad asked him if he thought we needed the change for a different playing style etc., and Monty basically told him "Yeah, that Princeton Style offense is not what they need there because it wasn't going anywhere, and it was definitely needing a change."

Just thought it was interesting to get another alum's opinion...

About Rick Barnes....

At least if we make an offer and Texas counter offers higher and he stays there, it'll be like the coaching version of ebay where if you can't afford an item, but know its going to go for more than you can afford, you make a couple of bids to jack up the price for the guy that can afford it...

its all about small moral victories.

Montgomery is like 95 years old....I don't want him.

And I don't want fucking Haith either. I don't care how good of a recruiter he was as an assistant coach at Wake and Texas. Hire Larry Harris if you want a great recruiter.

I want Barnes, Calipari, or Wright. I'm hearing Calipari is not interested and I just don't see us pulling Wright away from Villanova. At first I thought we had no shot at all for Barnes...and I still don't think its likely...but rumors are floating all over the place about him (and I'm not talkin about bull shit TWW rumors). So I'm skeptical about Barnes.

If we strike out on those three...I guess it's Gillespie or a midmajor coach. I guess I wouldn't mind Gillespie if he wins...but he runs that grind it out offense...and you fuckers that didn't like Herb's offense are going to hate Gillespie's. At least Herb's offense could be beautiful at times. And I really don't want a midmajor.

I'm really really really worried about how this is going to end up. We'll either be sitting pretty, or people will be laughing their asses off at us (including Herb).

i thought K and Calhoun got a fairly large sum too. anyone know how much they make. what about Boeheim, how much does he make? 1.8 million is a lot of money, but it seems like the coaches that are institutions at their respective schools would probably make 2 million or higher.

From the list I saw.....

Williams makes $1.9.
Tubby makes $2.2 or so and was the highest.
K on only was like 1.6.
Barnes currently makes 1.3.
