Im going to make a trip down to laguna seca in the spring.

I cant wait for my car to get up here so I can go over to SIR or whatever the hell its called now. Proformance does all day lap days for 200 bucks. Granted the track isnt nearly as good as VIR, but its also only 35 min away, costs less and I'm in the pacific northwest.

I hear the Portland raceway is much better, but probably wont get down there until spring time either.

Pacific Raceways looks like you have to go through their driving school unless you're in the Porsche club (at least this month, which is the only schedule i can find.) if you have no prior track experience, it's $500. http://www.proformanceracingschool.com/

Mission Raceway (in Canada) looks like they're done for the rest of the year (and until March, if this year's schedule is any indication).

Portland International Raceway is closed for construction.

it's 500 bucks if you dont have any open course certification and havent run the course before

if you have a cert, or do the 500 dollar course, then you can do open laps for cost +100 bucks for an instructor shadow. after two visits, its just the lap cost.

so it goes down in price quick. plus they have SCCA certification too, which is actually pretty cheap (~2200 bucks for the 2-day).

over the course of a year, it comes out WAY cheaper than the VIR HPDE days. its like 135 for a half day, 200 for a full day. even with the 500 dollar day 1

Had a blast at Laguna Seca w/ Ahmet as my codriver.

Conclusions:
#1 The corkscrew is the best sequence of turns in motorsports
#2 ABS is a good thing
#3 E30 brakes suck

oh, I almost forgot
#4 I'm the best road course driver on tww

Next up is 3/21 @ Thunderhill. I'll have my e30 out there if I can fix the brake issues, otherwise I'll take the m3 out to play. Ahmet&crew, when can I fly out and do vir/roadatl with jew guys.

I'll let you know as soon as I pick up a car. Should be soon now. I need to look into the roll bar thing while considering the S2k, and still playing w/the 911 idea (I don't like the interviews I'm getting), but more than likely I'll be in a C5 within a month, if that long. Like I said, i'll be in touch w/you sugar.

Best option for an S2000 roll bar right now it appears. He can put the harness bar lower at the proper position if you don't mind leaving the interior out.

I was looking into it, but switched jobs and bought an engagement ring, so I had to delay it for a while as a frivolous cost

uh oh.

Saw a WRX hit the wall at VIR Patriot sunday before last when it was all cold and damp and shit. lifted coming down the hill toward the pit area and it snapped on him, spun it completely around and smacked the front and right side into the foam blocks, and broke a jersey barrier in half.

flat footed all the way through like a long straitaway.

its an all or none set. you either go for it and hit some high speeds. or you pussy foot through it.

I've only seen patriot as a "circuit-x" or a drift0 event. Do they have HPDEs there?

I went out in the rain on my treaded all season street tires and it was slicker than eel snot. like crazy slippery. i've felt more in control with the M3 in the snow before. i slow-motion looped it out of hogpen on the warmup lap. like seriously wtf? no snap, nothing crazy, just a low speed, slow motion rotation i couldnt overcome. like being on ice. spun inside up onto the grass but stopped short of the armco.

pit in, they say i look ok, out i go. this time verrrry carefully. i'm lugging 3rd gear (gear up to limit torque/response) just putting along cuz it feels like shit. loop it out of 5a, slow spin into the tire wall. doh.

i pulled/hammered the hood, fender, and bumper out, checked the alignment, etc and it seemed good to go. i switched to my rcomps and went out again. same conditions, but this time everything was great. i had great grip and feel and all was fine. *shrug* So i chalk it up to running out of talent w/ really bad tires. i should have called it quits sooner when i knew it just wasnt right.

it was a private lapping session. no instructors. point by passing at the bottom of the hill before the uphill corkscrew. 5-6 cars on track at a time. We were going to go for lap times in the afternoon but no one wanted to push it in the conditions. It was just too cold and damp. I came in after about 25 minutes of all out lapping and the tires weren't even close to warm.

It was a THSCC DE, great event, well run.

I can't believe the proliferation of hardware people are bringing out... A sea of GT3s, tube frame race cars and the like, makes me Oh well, at least next week I'll be with Hype Rs, and feel fast again.

Any guidance/suggestions for an inexpensive car to do track days with? Might spend up to $10k for a screaming deal on just the right car...really thinking more around $5k.

1. Must not be FWD. Must have manual transmission. Not negotiable.

2. Strongly prefer more power than a stock Miata (though would get one if someone was flat-out giving it away).

3. Does not need to be cosmetically great, have lots of features, a nice interior, or be a daily driver. Does have to be street legal.

4. Must be inexpensive (relatively...I know quite well that beating the shit out of cars costs money) to operate--not just to buy. No E36 M3s with 180k, for example.

thinking about 240sx.

also thought about 1G DSM, "mildly" modified 1G Miata (Jackson SC, Greddy turbo, etc), E30, E36, etc.

Might consider 944 Porsche, 1G or 2G MR-2 (usually too expensive for what they are), 1G or 2G RX-7, higher mileage, salvage-titled S2000 or 350z (like 100k miles...not 200k miles).

dukie ima tell you strait up,

ill give you my civic, you'll have more fun in that thing on track than you ever had in any of your cars you've owned.

but seriously... buy a stock car. start out with the basics. dont jump into a car thats modded and has all this extra crap on it. if you do, you'll never know where you're hurting and you'll be hiding your mistakes.

you dont need a mildly modified anything, heck just buy a minivan and you'll love it.

you're probably gonna end up selling it anyways so who cares right?

im just sayin. any car is fun on the track. slow or fast, you'll learn to make it faster, faster than you've ever driven.

and $10K for a car to do track days with... dude thats a lot of money for a car to do track days with. unless of course you still want a daily driver out of it

goto http://www.racingjunk.com and pick something up, like my integra for example. already has a cage in it and it stripped out. NOW YOU CAN BRAG.

Steer clear of the 240 for track work. Look at what you see at the track in your price range.
e30, e36 /e36 M3, 944s, Hondas, Mustangs.

You don't want FWD (which I think is a mistake, you can learn a lot from any car, and though FWD is also not my thing, you can learn some quite advanced skills in one that'd take you forever to get to with a RWD car, like proper off throttle rotation), so that rules out the Hondas, -the S2000. I don't care about previous damage, but the smallest structural damage (and I do mean very small), can really change how the car responds, so if you do play that gamble, be careful. High mileage is never an issue in and of itself IMO.

I'd also avoid the 944, it's too slow, period. Also, the high polar moment of inertia is fun to play with at turbo power levels, and just plain boring w/the base car. Budget and track 944 Turbo do not belong in the same planet, so scratch that.

If you want to spend $5k, I'd buy a set up e30. If you want to spend I'd buy an e36 M3 (HAY I HAVE JUST THE ONE TO BUY!!!!). The thing about the M3 is, you're not going to find a more blank slate type of car as far as actually learning how to drive something, AND they're bulletproof. You ought to check out my car.

To recap, whatever you do, don't buy a 240, and consider FWD. That's the god of cheap reliable track car. If you really hate FWD, -->e30 on budget. If you look at an e36, bushings are an absolute necessity.

Also, come out w/me to VIR sometime.

steer clear from the 240? Just wanted to hear your reasoning......I ask out of curiosity having a 240 may have something to do with it but between people its eitheir a love or hate feeling. I know the motor sucks but I think it can be easily fixed with a turbo kit or swapping in a Japanese motor I know these use it for drifting but I think it a good chasis that you can get for cheap and fun with then again ask me after I get my running and going on track I guess I may change my mind. But then again this might go back to which is the straight out of the box track car with minimal work needed

eitheir havent heard from you in a while sounds like you are doing alright

How much you want for that M3 y0?

The vast majority of 240sx's are set up for drifting. For track work, brakes are inadequate, as is cooling. I have not owned one, but I didn't like the chassis on the ones that I have driven (though they do drift nicely, I'll give them that). To each his own, I don't think it's a bad car, I just don't think it's a great first choice compared to other cars in it's price range. An e36 M3 already has 240hp and a well sorted quite track suitable set up out of the box. Add suspension/brake pads if you'd like. Brings me to my car... I'm asking $8400 for it (was asking 11,200 before the stock market crashed).

That said, it boils down to personal choice, I'd never recommend a WRX over an M3, especially for track work, and yet that's exactly what I'm doing, or at least trying to...

Yep, that's kinda where I'm going this time, and partially for that exact reason. I don't want anything as badass as most of the cars I've had for the last 5 years (even besides the fact that I can't bring myself to spend much money on a car with my current lifestyle)...I want to step back to something more moderate and really work on my driving technique.

Quote :

Yeah, I don't really want to spend that much. It's unnecessary for what I want. That said, I would go that high for a screamin' deal on the right car (and yeah, at that price, it would probably be something that I'd drive more than just once every week or two and on track days.)

Quote :
"goto http://www.racingjunk.com and pick something up"

You are a step ahead of me--I meant to include in my post last night a question about good websites to look for this kind of stuff. Craigslist and eBay, yeah, but those still are still somewhat shots in the dark for this kind of car. Any other suggestions (besides maaaaybe HPJ--which is still generally not focused on what I'm looking for)?

If the 240sx is really that bad of an idea, the E30 and Miata (nothing like my old one, but possibly a little heavier breathing than stock) are probably my next choices. I know a bunch about Miatas, but little about E30s. Where's a good place to look for them, and to look for information about them?
