We're big enough that sales and marketing is it's own thing, so me having your resume directly won't help a bunch. Just shoot an e-mail in to the jobs e-mail address and it'll get to the right person.

Our start-up is looking for a mid-level iOS developer and willing to pay them handsomely. No bullshit, this is a quality position and we're looking to hire someone full-time.

Any recommendations would be wonderful. Office in downtown Raleigh and the candidate must be a veteran iOS developer. No entry level here.

PM me for more details or a job description.

Anyone have advice on what I should/do learn to make myself marketable as a software engineer? Coming from a mechanical background.

Start at the bottom and work your way up. Mobile is definitely the hot item right now for talent acquisition (in my line of work) but any of the latest technologies will do. Just pick something and get at it. Coding can be done by anyone.. but that rule of 10,000 hours separates the "good" from the "elite." Find something you like, put in the time, and become elite.

Thanks. I've familiarized myself with HTML/CSS, Javascript/JQuery, Python so far. No idea where to go from there, other than just practicing app building. Web apps are the most appealing to me right now, but I know nothing about the market.

Basically I know how to "code", but how do I make myself employable?

Start building out things with some substance. When we are hiring we download every app that the candidate has worked on. Does the app include integration w/ a social API? What did the candidate find difficult about coding that piece. What hurdles did you not see coming? How did you handle them? Is the app still a viable product today? How has the owner handled updates?

Two suggestions for a potential young-bucks trying to land a job:

1.) Become personable - this is often difficult for CSC or engineering majors in general but being an good communicator will break down otherwise tall "walls" to entry. Don't talk over your peers and frame the conversation towards the individual you're speaking to.

2.) Build shit. Don't have any experience? Great, go and build that idea you've been pondering for months. You don't have anything else to do anyways (you're unemployed) so take the opportunity to build that "gas chromatograph mass spectrometer" (a real thing) app that you've been dreaming of. Not only will it get you familiar with the development process but it'll also be something cool you can put on your resume (and sell to your new interviewee). Entrepreneurial drive is a rare commodity in a programmers quiver, no better time to start that drive than now!

Interested in learning some Android?

Sorry, I couldn't help myself...

Awesome, thanks a ton. Exactly what I was looking for.

I'm actually employed as a mech engineer right now--the whole programming thing was spurred because I had an idea for a (hopefully profitable) website. I'm enjoying the learning process a lot, plus the benefits and pay in the CS industry dwarf what mechanical engineers typically receive. As far as being personable, I'm pretty positive I have a leg on up on the industry, based on stories I've heard...

Haha thanks for the offer, but I'm most likely going to be in Colorado in June or July (unless something crazy happens).

http://jobs.citrix.com/USA/job/Raleigh-Lead-Engr-Systems-Admin-NC-27601/59332300/

This position is essentially level 3 technical support. The working job title is "Production Support Engineer".

What you'd be doing:

-Data retrieval from/modification to production databases
-General, end of the line support/troubleshooting for an enterprise-facing web application (and the platform it runs on)
-Work with clients, customer support, engineering, and operations to triage technical problems with the product and drive resolution

Preferred skills:

-SQL. 70% of the job is writing SQL scripts. We use Microsoft SQL Server. If not SQL, then at least experience with other databases.
-Some experience with troubleshooting web applications. Basic understanding of object oriented programming is a bonus.
-Experience working with external clients. This is not a role where you'll be able to hole up and code, you will need to communicate with with customers and folks within support/engineering frequently.

Send me a PM if you have any questions. This is a challenging position, but it's also rewarding, assuming you're the type that likes to solve problems.
