Thankfully I kissed my lucky egg, I still have a job. 5 people on my team were let go though. Tough day, especially for them

This page needs a qntmfred re-post. Shine up that résumé with a little CrazyCode.

glad things worked out for you DonMega sorry about your team though, the flip side of you keeping your job of course means there's going to be a lot of slack to pick up...

^^ Thanks, we'll see how all the pieces are falling tomorrow. CIO had a very brief call with everyone on Friday and said we'll be reprioritizing the roadmap, but who knows what that means.

^ Our CEO called for a recession in the next 6 months. He likes to make big predictions. Really we are at the mercy of our investors and as a young tech company if google/amazon lay off people we will be laying off people a few months later to stay in line with the industry.

Corporate speak is so silly. How can they take themselves seriously when they say stuff like that!?

scored in the top 1%

also, had an in person interview today and one of the guys on the interview panel was one of my old suitemates from Sullivan dorm

a couple coding exercises where they would give you a few requirements and an implementation, and you'd have to make code changes to fix bugs or fulfill requirements. you can run the code as many times as you want within the allocated time limit. it reported the results of a series of unknown test cases, and you could submit as many times as you want.

multiple answer (multiple choice) questions about language/framework/syntax capabilities.

numerical/logical reasoning questions like given a particular set up conditions (more or less a venn diagram), answer questions about whether various other conditions are possible, or for a few different phone plans, given a monthly fee, # of free minutes, and a per/minute rate, which phone call plan is cheapest under a given range of monthly minutes used.

Interesting I’ve done a few big tech tech interviews the past few months but nothing that in depth. Usually has just been to write code from scratch to solve a toy problem. Sometimes they let you google stuff sometimes they don’t, but either way it’s a really unnatural way for me to write code.

But you could try adding emoji support to tww as a pretend hackerrank problem

started the new job today. of the couple times i've been out of work (twice during the great recession, once between moving from NYC back to NC, and for several months before I formally joined Yang2020) this was the shortest, at just under a month till I got an offer. ngl I was a little bit looking forward to more time off before starting up the grind again, but fate waits for no man I suppose.

Moved to a new role recently and every dilbert trope Is real with the new team I’m on

When your company has lost 50% of it’s head count and your svp says you have 1 yr of Runway, arguing about which compilers to use is not a good idea

Dang you guys are still going. I sold my soul and left software to work at a bank. Still tech I guess.

had a buddy go the hedge fund route. even 2M/yr in all cash wasn't enough to keep him from quitting out of sheer boredom and daily skullduggery. he's back at a startup

Yeah, the money is good. It's more about stability, work/life balance, and other benefits. I'm only 4 months in, so we'll see if things start getting real boring.

I'm not majoring in anything related to cybersecurity
But I find the field super fascinating, mostly due to the policy side of things and the future implications. as a result, I want to explore it technically too.

1) any recommendations on where to start? I've been working on the absolute basics + reading up on general security practices, but not in a very structured way. kind of just 'surfing' round

2) are there any careers in fields which involve/deal with the issue but aren't necessarily super technical with it?

I believe csc405 was a decent intro class at ncsu
https://people.duke.edu/~tkb13/courses/ncsu-csc405-2015fa/

not sure it still exists

I went through the SOC 2 compliance process a while back using https://www.verygoodsecurity.com/ (and there's a ton of companies just like them in this space) and they have business development reps, account managers, customer success reps, technical project managers, auditor partnership folks, etc. all need to have a decent understanding of their product offerings, which are technical in nature. cybersecurity is a relatively lucrative field to be in these days, even if much of the space imo is well-intentioned lip service
