^ the difference between the top offers and everyone else is just astounding.

https://www.levels.fyi

Old co-worker got an E5 offer and basically doubled what he was making.

Entry level comp is almost $200K now.

^ the thing I struggle with understanding is Big 4 leveling - does your old co-w feel like they were under-leveled at all on hire? seems to be a common practice. also levels.fyi only focuses on engineering and PM - really hard for me to get a sense of what a designer or design manager would be making at one of those companies without going to Blind - which is a cesspool.

Just curious, I'm content in my current job, but have you guys seen salary ranges for SDETs? Basically I do everything from performance test (load testing with tools like Locust.io or LoadRunner), security scans, write test automation, handle monitoring and alerting of infrastructure (devops to a degree), and a whole bunch of other stuff.

^^ Probably doesn't help because I'm in LA, but low to mid $100s. I managed a couple of people like that after another manager got axed.

I don't think he feels that under-leveled--I think he lucked out. If you knock it out of the park and they really like you you'll have a good offer. If you barely skate by the offer won't be as good.

A designer we had at a startup got offered over $200k for both LinkedIn and Apple and that was just base. Not sure on the stock and bonus side. He was the best I'd ever seen though.

^^^^^Yea but you're talking about onsite right, in response to a question about remote work? It seems like most of the top paying companies don't allow remote work and if you do take remote, you're taking a cut.

Random question: anyone attended a HackerX event? Seems kind of dumb, but I get invites all the time and figure I might go for the hell of it.

I have been to HackerX before. It’s like a quick dating event with the attending companies. Those employers are usually well known in the industries.
But it was two years ago already. Dunno how it’s going on right now. But I think it’s cool.

^I went. It was absolutely terrible.

Quote :
"meet with some of the world’s most innovative companies and fastest growing startups"

At least one of the companies was over 20+ years old. None of them particularly noteworthy.

Quote :
"Meet up to 20 companies in 2 hours"

It was crowded. I was able to meet with 2 companies in 2 hours. There were only 6 there.

Quote :
"free beer and pizza"

This was a lie. Unforgivable.

They billed it at an event for full stack developers, but most of the people there were not that and one of the recruiters specifically did not want full stack. I had low expectations on this thing, but it was way worse.

So I'm a technology/engineering teacher in wake county..and contemplating leaving the teaching profession.

When in college, I was exposed to a lot of fields as I began as a mechanical engineering major. I ended up switching to Technology, Engineering & Design Education(drafting, 3d modeling, graphic design, digital media etc.) The issue is that I don't have one specific specialization with with to apply to jobs

I know that I could quickly pick up whatever it is that I need to learn for a given job, but with a lack of specialization, I don't know where to begin looking. I would assume that as a teacher, a company would see value in my ability to communicate and relay information. Maybe I could potentially get my foot in the door somewhere as some type of corporate trainer?

Any ideas?

go into IT project management.

I find people who are good at a lot of things - can run meetings, call BS on tech people who try to slow projects (because they know a lot of different things). Often times the staying on task, keep the right folks updated, and holding vendors/techs/engineer accountable is a skill even the best people don't have.

Has anybody worked for NCSU IT? I'm going for a field-tech part-time job there soon but I want to know first-hand how working with them is. I know it's going to be a lot of grunt-work etc. etc. but I'm just looking for something to do so I don't grind my face into the wall w/ all the EE/CE classes I've gotta take in the Fall.
Fuck man I just wanna graduate

I did when I was in college. I worked for the department directly instead of campus IT. that came with better benefits and negotiation ability. good job for a student.

^ cool cool; good to know, I'm going for a position with the department too; it's a little weird that they split work between central IT and departmental IT but I imagine the (math) department I'm looking to work with is more field-work oriented.
It's between that and working as a barista on campus

Completely dependent on experience and what the person brings to the table. Total comp will top out at 150-190k + options.

My friend on the other hand lost his job yesterday, so I'm all ears.

My friend applied to Salesforce. He has 10 years experience, a masters degree in CS with 4.0 GPA, leads a team, does excellent work, numerous side projects, 100% match on the required tech stack.

A week later quietly removed from consideration with no screen, interview, or feedback.

He later heard they won't hire anyone without an internal referral. Why have the public job posting then??

Ah, I read that the only legal requirement around is federal contractors are required to post jobs and favor veterans. I think they are a federal contractor so that sort of makes sense.

And yet you would think not even considering outside candidates is pretty clearly bypassing the spirit of the law. Possibly if my friend was a vet it would be different.

last time this thread was active I had just started a new job building a DevOps department for a small SaaS business. Wasn't really what I was looking for at the time, but covid had just started doing its thing in the US, and frankly after a year of volunteering/working for Yang2020, I just needed to start making some money again. I'd started looking around earlier this year, but ended up pausing because of all the tech layoffs going on.

The time has come to restart my search again, I'm looking for engineering leadership roles. Most of my experience is with the Microsoft stack, but I've spent a lot of time in Node and Python too. Agnostic to front-end frameworks, comfortable in both AWS and Azure, although I'm not really interested in running a DevOps team at this point. I've been mostly remote for years, but since Raleigh has a decent tech presence, it might be fun to work out of an office again.

I know there's not too many of us still posting here but if anybody happens to have any connections with anyone looking for somebody to run their engineering/product development team(s), let me know, or feel free to pass along my LinkedIn. https://www.linkedin.com/in/thekenwarner/

A call was scheduled at 4:25 for a 4:30 meeting with all people managers across the company to discuss a large round of layoffs happening tomorrow 9am West Coast time. I was not involved in any of the planning, and IT was one of the teams called out as being impacted. I manage half of the IT department, so very likely me or some people from my team are getting the ax tomorrow. I am on PTO this week at the beach, and trying not to freak out but hard since I have no clue what is going to happen and tomorrow is going to be a tough day for a lot of people.

Thanks for letting me share, can't talk about this with anyone else.

That sucks, dude. My company is doing voluntary severance packages at the moment. We'll see if that allows them to hit their target number or not.
