Guy is a total dumbass but I am not sure he is a murderer.

I hope if he gets paroled after the 3 years he is not allowed to drink a drop or operate a vehicle.

I just don't see how you can justify the 2nd degree murder charge on things like this. Unless they can prove that you got into the car for the sole purpose of finding another car and going kamikaze with the intent to kill the passenger.

"RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police say a 21-year-old man was intoxicated and going nearly three times the speed limit early Saturday when his SUV slammed into a car, killing its driver.

Timothy Lee Ford, of 2101 Versitile Drive, was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in the wreck that killed Sika Akou Ekpe, 21, of Raleigh.

Ford also faces two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle and one count of driving while impaired.

Police said Ford was going 90 mph in the 2100 block of Lake Wheeler Road around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when his 2005 Toyota slammed into Ekpe's 1999 Mitsubishi as she was turning left from a parking lot. The Mitsubishi spun around three times, and the Toyota overturned, striking a tree.

Ekpe's passenger, Cloudia Olandzo Bo, 30, of Raleigh, suffered serious injuries. She was taken to WakeMed.

Rescuers had to extricate Ford from the SUV, police said. He suffered minor injuries.

A witness saw Ford speeding and straddling the center line before the wreck, police said."

its 2nd degree murder because everybody on this fucking planet knows what happens when you drink and drive.

these murderers load their asses into deadly weapons and fire themselves onto public roads with the rest of us.

fuck them.

should be a capital offense- they often kill multiple people at once.

you put alcohol or drugs into your body and get behind the wheel, you're knowingly taking everyone's life, including your own, into your hands, it's murder or attempted murder, hands down.... if you pick up a gun, not knowing if it's loaded or not, point it at somebody, and pull the trigger, it's the same damn thing

Quote :
"Durham, N.C. — A tractor-trailer driver faces multiple charges, including driving while impaired and possession of drugs, in Thursday's crash that killed three people on Interstate 40.

Ronald Eugene Graybeal, 50, of Newport, Tenn., is being held in the Durham County jail under a $500,000 bond.

He is charged with felony death by vehicle, two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle, DWI, possession of marijuana, methadone and drug paraphernalia.

Alcohol was not involved, according to authorities, who said Graybeal was charged with DWI because he had drugs in his system.

Troopers say Graybeal was driving west on I-40 near U.S. Highway 15/501 when he crashed into four vehicles, killing three of the drivers.

He first crashed into the back of a Ford F-250 truck driven by John Hall Llanio, 38, of Kannapolis, and then a Chevy Equinox driven by Barbara Boda Caldwell, 64, of Mebane, troopers said.

His tractor-trailer then hit a passenger vehicle driven by Gary Dwayne Smith, 45, of Burlington. The vehicle's make and model couldn't be identified because it was so badly burned, authorities said.

Llanio, Caldwell and Smith all died in the crash.

Graybeal is also accused of crashing into a box truck driven by Reginald Keith Thompson, 49, of Greensboro, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was released from Duke University Hospital.

Truck driver killed in I-85 wreck identified

Meanwhile, authorities on Friday released the identity of a tractor-trailer driver killed in a wreck that injured seven other people and closed Interstate 85 in Orange County for about five hours Thursday.

State troopers said that a tractor-trailer carrying cement mixers overturned on I-85 South, near the N.C. Highway 86 exit, knocking off the mixers. That triggered another wreck involving a tanker, Mazda Protege, Ford Crown Victoria and another tractor-trailer hauling cardboard that caught fire.

Billy Dean Brady Jr., 44, of Kings Mountain, died of his injuries, troopers said. He was driving the truck hauling cardboard.

Seven other people, including the driver hauling cement mixers, a 7-year-old girl and two passersby who stopped to help, were injured.

Six were taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Hospital spokesman Tom Hughes said Thursday that one passerby had been released, the other was in good condition and the four patients involved in the wreck were in fair condition.

The seventh injured person was taken to Duke University Hospital. That person's condition was unknown."

That's a bit of a harder call. Generally, it would be nice to say that no one should operate any vehicle on any drugs, but some of us are on medications all the time anyway, and I think we already accepted caffeine and other uppers as a part of the big rig driving culture to extend the duration they can drive.

Obviously the only answer to this problem is robot cars.

Yes, its a narcotic analgesic and a known impairing substance.

There are a lot of medications people take daily that can impair you; however must people build up a tolerance. Legally prescribed medication that is determined to be the impairing substance is a mitigation factor for sentencing.

^^Yeah, that's what I didn't wanna get into.

People can kinda "get high" on methadone...and the half-life is loooong so it's something that you can accidentally take too much of over time and combine with other stuff without even thinking about it. But I could see a truck driver with chronic pain using methadone in a responsible way (even if he was buying it without a prescription). Or being on his own little illegal maintenance program to help with withdrawal.

That said, he's most likely a run-of-the-mill addict, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had additional drugs in his system besides the methadone/marijuana they found on him. Plus, truck drivers using anything other than uppers is pretty troubling to me...but, I guess they may need to take something to come down and sleep after being up to drive, and the depressants would show up in their systems even if they weren't actually under their influence at the time.

But I'm not sure how much that distinction matters when you kill multiple people on the road.

If people can abuse it so easily, why do they prescribe methadone to ease them off opiate use?

I don't have a lot of personal experience. I know one person who claimed to prefer methadone to other opiates, but I don't think she could afford it very long before having to switch. Plus, she took a lot of anti-anxiety medications daily anyway. So maybe her preferred drug was really a mix of methadone/benzos.

And the only person I know who has ever been on maintenance meds took buprenorphine, not methadone.

I'm just saying that, while it is "serious business," I could see situations where this guy was trying to do something responsible--like, avoid withdrawal/not get high on the haul or treat actual chronic pain.

^I don't think they prescribe it take-home for withdrawal very easily. Typically, you have to take it in the clinic. So the illegal stuff available on the streets is from prescriptions for pain/stolen, just like all the other meds that people abuse so easily.

Yep. I've never heard of it available outside of clinics legally. And since this guy had it in his truck, something tells me he wasn't using legally

"SPRING HOPE, N.C. — A wrong-way driver died after he crashed head-on into a car carrying three teenage girls in Nash County early Tuesday, killing one of the teens and injuring the other two, troopers said.

Authorities said they believe the 34-year-old man had been drinking. His name will not be released until his family is notified of his death.

The crash happened around 2 a.m. on U.S. Highway 64 near Frazier Road, about 4 miles southwest of Spring Hope.

The man was driving a 1989 Honda passenger car west in the eastbound lane when he crashed into a 2000 Chevrolet passenger car carrying three 17-year-old girls, according to Highway Patrol Sgt. David Wainwright.

Brianna McLaughlin, of Rocky Mount, was sitting in the back seat of the Chevrolet and died in the crash, troopers said. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to authorities.

The Chevrolet's driver, Paige Toelke, of Nashville, and front seat passenger, Leigh Bulluck, of Rocky Mount, were both taken to WakeMed with serious injuries. They were wearing their seat belts.

At last check, Bulluck was in fair condition, according to the hospital. Toelke's condition was not available. No other information was released."

"IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO — Idaho authorities say a mother and daughter were arrested for drunken driving within an hour of each other — the mother when she went to pick up her daughter's dog.

The Post Register reports a sheriff's officer stopped 28-year-old Alisha Gardner at 10:56 p.m. Saturday in Idaho Falls after spotting her car swerving and crossing the centerline.

Sgt. Jeff Edwards says her blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit, so Gardner was taken to jail.

Just under an hour later, 51-year-old Diana Gardner arrived to pick up her daughter's dog, which was in the car. An officer smelled alcohol on her and a test revealed that her blood-alcohol level was also twice the legal limit, so she was arrested.

The report did not say what happened to the dog."

I think BAC testers in cars is a wonderful idea. Drinking and driving causes more than 10'000 deaths in the US each year. It may seem like an extreme measure, however, something has to be done.

Just curious...I wonder how many people die each year due to accidents while sober.

...around 22,000 in 2010 according to Wiki (if you subtract the ten that are caused by drunk accidents).

Not as bad as I thought it would be.

I think reliable BAC testers should be available to the public at a reasonably affordable rate. When I was looking for one several years ago all the reviews I found showed the consumer models to be wildly inaccurate. I'd consider it again if I saw something indicating that the technology was better.

Requiring every person to have one in their car would probably cost billions and only a small portion of the population would be affected by it. No way I'd agree to that.

Why don't we just start driving cars made of soft foam? Sure it would be expensive at first, but if the government made everyone do it the cost would come down; and think of all the lives we would save.
