DD and his staff did very well in just two months or so. The hat over at UNC was talking about how they need 18 months to really feel recruit a player as fully as they'd like and you could see a big jump in UNC from last year to this year for the holes. Hopefully DD and crew can show similar improvement this time next year.

"Doeren adds long-time high school coach to staff

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State University head football coach Dave Doeren added depth to his ability to recruit in-state prospects Tuesday with the hiring of Henry Trevathan as director of high school relations. Trevathan has a long history of head coaching postings within the high school ranks, including six years at Raleigh's Broughton High School and, most recently, two years as head coach at Southern Alamance High School.

Trevathan started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at State after his 1979 graduation from East Carolina University. He has experience at the college level on the staffs at Lenoir-Rhyne and Elon universities.

Trevathan continues a legacy with the Wolfpack. His father, Henry Trevathan Sr., is a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and served as an assistant coach at State from 1986-93."

^ Probably a wise choice to bring on a guy like that who I assume has strong ties with a lot of NC high school football coaches. State is probably still trying to recover from the Amato era where he pissed off most of the high school coaches across the state.

Doeren after Thursday's practice:

Quote :
" "The depth chart is dynamic. It's changing. It's changing in the middle of practice sometimes. It's called a battlefield promotion or a battlefield demotion."

"That's what spring is for us in the first year. It's an evaluation time for us to really learn what we can't and can do well. We'll try to adjust our schemes accordingly."

"We've moved a few guys back and forth. In the secondary, Byrd has spent some time at safety and corner. We've got guys playing nickel and corner. Some of the linebackers are multi-trained in that way as well."

"It was fun to watch. The guys had good energy. It was good to see guys finish plays."

"We're teaching the offense... day-by-day we're adding pieces here and there. Some of htem have diferet skillsets so coach Canada is making sure he's calling plays accordingly to who is in the game."

"Jacoby is doing really well. He's been up-and-down, which you expect, learning a new offense and new teamates. He competes and he's a great leader. He's really energetic."

"Bra'lon Cherry made a couple of plays today, a new receiver. Cole is struggling snapping the ball at times, but he's playing hard."

"Those guys should be in high school.... those two guys should be going to prom and things like that. We expect that. I love their work ethic. They show up everyday." "

good to hear that Jacoby is doing well..but uhhhh...what about our starting QB for THIS year???

after watching the mic'd up sessions it looks like Pete is the starter but Jacoby is dominating.

"NC State's Dave Doeren takes wild bus ride to stardom
Jeremy Fowler
April 20, 2013 4:03 pm ET

RALEIGH, N.C. -- As NC State coach Dave Doeren makes his spring game debut with the Wolfpack on Saturday, there's an interesting backstory about how he got here.

He took a Greyhound. Sort of.

Doeren wanted to wait until after the MAC title game to listen to job offers. He was hearing about them while he tried to organize a restless team outside a rest stop early on a frosty December morning somewhere in the Midwest (Doeren didn't remember the city).

Doeren tried to limit most of the contract talk with Bazant to text messaging while on the bus. He asked his agent, who's real and who's not?

“I just felt I had a great team coming back at [NIU],” Doeren said. “I didn't want to leave somewhere just to collect a million-dollar paycheck.”

Cal and Colorado were in play. So was NC State.

NC State intrigued him because of quality facilities, a dedicated fan base/administration, and a program that was hungry after going 33 seasons without a conference title. Coach Tom O'Brien was fired despite four bowl appearances in six years, though O'Brien finished one season in the national top 25. NC State wanted to be a perennial contender.

Doeren's family had vacationed twice in the Asheville area and loved it.

Athletic director Debbie Yow flew to Illinois that day to lock up Doeren. He had a message for Yow.

“When we get a championship mentality here, I can help this place,” Doeren said. “I felt like that. Had I gone to a Colorado-type place where they really need to start over facility-wise -- you're rebuilding everything there. Here, I don't have to. It just seemed like if I can get kids in-state that want to stay in state, which hasn't happened here, that will be big.”

Doeren's first order of business upon his December start was strengthening relationships with prep coaches and players in talent-rich North Carolina. NC State isn't the first school to try this, but Doeren wants to enhance the Wolfpack brand to local schools through a mutual respect.

With 11 returning starters and his best quarterback option, Florida transfer Jacoby Brissett, on the sidelines until 2014 due to NCAA transfer rules, Doeren knows his new job requires patience.

“They know I have to build a program. It's not going to be year one that we're the best program, even though they want it to be,” Doeren said. “It's not. It's going to take a couple of years to get over the hump of what we have and build a championship attitude."

Disagree

With our schedule, looks like it could be a 3-9 or a 9-3. Could go either way. I don't expect a 6-6 or 7-5

i'm not expecting that many wins. you can put us down for 2 Ls out of the gate - Clemson and FSU - and 2 Ws - Richmond and CMU.

that leaves 8 games that could go either way. the odds of us losing the rest, or running the table are nil. it'll be somewhere around 50% on those 8 games, so we'll finish with a 5-7 or 6-6ish year.

TOB left the cupboard pretty bare, and we will be very frustrated at times. especially with UNC being our homecoming game. and the ECU/maryland final two weeks will probably jack us up and leave a very bad taste in our mouth until 2014.

if we're going to be bad, i say we give it 100% and really shut the bed so we don't have to give the UNC and ECU douches any more credit than they deserve when they kick the shit out of us

i'm not sure why some people keep repeating that. no, we don't any POY candidates, but we have solid depth at every position with a healthy mix of veterans. Our defense should actually be pretty stout, we'll have several beasts on the defensive line.

I like how you praised the recent pick-up of a local recruit with no stars. Somehow I don't think your reaction would have been the same if we picked that same guy up a year or two ago.

But like I said, I know we don't have any great talents on the team, but we've got a lot of solid depth to build around. I too hope that Doeren & co. can be a better recruiter than the previous staff.

BC is somehow pretty tough at home, but especially against us. We've never won there. And we all know how Wake away games go.

I think we'll def beat Cuse & Maryland at home, and split the Duke/UNC games

I agree with Bullet. The cupboard isn't bare. Yeah it could be better but we're not in bad shape.

N.C. State coach Dave Doeren won the coaches competition with a 292-yard drive.

Quote :
"Seven months after leading his football team to a win over Georgia Tech, Miami coach Al Golden denied the Yellow Jackets again in a different venue. At the Chick-fil-A Bowl Challenge, a golf tournament featuring 14 college coaches and their celebrity partners, Golden and Heisman Trophy winner Gino Torretta were champions Tuesday at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro.
At 11 under par in the scramble format, the Miami team was one shot ahead of South Carolina (coach Steve Spurrier and former football star Sterling Sharpe) and two in front of Tech (coach Paul Johnson and former basketball great Jon Barry) and Clemson (coach Dabo Swinney and former football star Steve Fuller). Johnson and Barry, the two-time defending champions, still won $50,000 for Tech scholarship’s fund.
The field included four Heisman Trophy winners — Alabama’s Mark Ingram, Auburn’s Bo Jackson, Spurrier and Torretta. Other notable celebrity partners included North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams and Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim.
Barry won Monday’s celebrity long-drive competition for the third consecutive year with a 319-yard bomb. N.C. State coach Dave Doeren won the coaches competition with a 292-yard drive."

If you look at the depth chart (courtesy of some dude on PP), you'll see that we have solid depth at almost every position. No world-beaters, but solid depth: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=178&f=2515&t=11316750&p=2 (table about halfway down the page)

iirc, when Amato left there were gaping holes at some positions, and we had to move guys around just to have depth at every position. At least, that's how I remember it. (and nobody knew how well RW was going to turn out)

RW hadn't signed a letter of intent when TOB took over for Chuck, TOB had to re-recruit him after he got hired. I'm not saying it was a heated recruiting battle but I think RW took a visit to Duke around that time so TOB could have said "fuck it" and moved on.

Yeah, when TOB came in we had multiple walk-ons on the 2 deep for at least 2 years. I think we're fairly solid all around (i.e, the 2 deep is full of D1 players).

in college you can cover up holes. and walk ons arent always that big of a gulf from crappy scholarship players anyway. you need impact players who can win games and we dont have many of them right now

depth only matters once youre already at the 8 win level. thats when it's the difference from being clemson and lsu

6-6 is a realistic expectation right now with 7-5 likely being my highest. I think 6-6 or 5-7 are the likely candidates though. I suppose looking at the schedule again there are 10 winnable games there if everything went right but lets face it that isnt gonna happen.

I'd like to make a bowl...even if it's a shitty one. But I wouldn't be surprised/disappointed if we don't.

I've seen what having a shitty QB can do to a team (Stone/Davis/Evans/Beck/lollers)...so I know that if Thomas and/or Stocker don't pan out...it could be a painful season.
