Being short, I have a tough time finding shorts that are the correct length (don't hit the knee, but not too high to be considered short shorts). The only shorts I can find that fit this description are Columbias...and some of them have cargo pockets. But since they aren't long, I really don't feel like I'm going back to middle school/high school with it. Examples:

I can usually find them on sale at Belk as well. 8/11/2011 10:26:45 AM |

Was that khaki post facetious? I didn't read back to see context. Wearing khakis and looking like a respectable professional is douchey among a group of friends? Are said friends homeless? 8/11/2011 12:08:48 PM |

haha. I do wear khakis on certain occasions with particular crowds of people. I don't ONLY wear them though.
I have friends who either wear khaki pants or khaki shorts for casual wear. No jeans, no other variants of shorts. That's boring. Business casual hasn't changed in 50 years.
What's that bar on the corner of Hillsborough and Oberlin? There's some old photos on the wall of Golf tournaments and the attire has literally not changed in the last century.
I just think it's good to mix it up some. 8/11/2011 12:34:56 PM |

I still wear them, mainly because when I'm wearing shorts I'm not trying to impress anyone. Plus, as I wear glasses but don't like the sun, if it's daylight outside I have a glasses case with me with sunglasses inside. I can fit that in my left pocket with my keys, as I do when wearing pants, but it's much more comfortable in a cargo pocket. I also have some non-cargo shorts, but they damn sure aren't 7" inseam because I'd look like an idiot. Shorts should arrive at or just above kneecap.

I'd also bet that most of you have one pair of "dress" shoes that is presumably black with a square toe or have obnoxiously large rubber soles. You also probably think Van Heusen makes quality dress shirts, and that your one or two horrible ties are adequate. You think khakis are dress pants. You don't know your jacket size. "" |
-Stopped wearing braided belts in the 90's -No crew socks. I do have white ankle socks for when working out or working in the yard. What else are you going to wear with sneakers? And those are the only times I wear athletic shoes. -I do have square-toe, black shoes with a rubber sole. I'm wearing them right now, at work, with jeans. They are not "dress" shoes. I have leather-soled shoes in black and cordovan that are, in fact, dress shoes for when the occasion calls for it. -Quality dress shirts, not so much, but I wear dress shirts very infrequently so I don't own many. If I was going to wear them to work I'd invest in some nice ones. I do only have a few ties, as I wear I tie maybe 3x/year. I work in tech support, at a university. The fact that I wear collared shirts and keep them tucked in surpasses the attire of many of my co-workers. -Khakis are not dress pants. They are business casual. The two can blur at times. I own dress pants for, again, when the occasion requires, or want to look nice going out. I try not to wear khakis outside work or the golf course because of the instant business casual association--jeans or slacks instead. -44R.8/11/2011 3:38:37 PM |

Bottom line is that cargo shorts are okay as long as they aren't long and go past the knee and don't have big, baggy cargo pockets (like the old A&F/American Eagle style cargo pants). 8/11/2011 3:40:37 PM |

Dress shirts are all about fit, especially if you're going to be wearing a jacket over them. I bought a bunch of expensive shit right out of school and turned my nose up at the Men's Wearhouse and Kohl's crowd, but in reality, a lot of that shit fits just as well as bespoke, as long as you don't have narrow shoulders. 8/11/2011 4:32:21 PM |

It literally takes me forever to find shirts that fit. Either they aren't big enough for my shoulders or they're large enough to carry a baby in the front. I feel like 95% of all dress shirts are made for old fat men. The guy at Nordstroms even said fitted shirts for "my build" are hard to come by and most "athletic type" men end up wearing shirts that are too big for them.
^^so help me. I've been in the professional world a grand total of 10 months and I find it very difficult to find shirts that:
A. Fit B. Don't get completely wrinkled C. Aren't $75+ (I don't mind spending $40-60 on a good shirt)

80-100 is pretty much the bare minimum for quality unless you find a great sale. Under that range, you're inevitably going to end up with loose seams and shoddy craftsmanship. Lands End may be your best bet for quality and fit at around $60. 8/11/2011 4:40:40 PM |

If the shirt lasts and it fits I could maybe spend $100. I dress up every day though (and a suit once/week). So I need something that won't fall apart either.
I also need new suits. I have no idea where to go in Charlotte for that. 8/11/2011 4:42:40 PM |

listen to slave...if you buy a cheap shirt and have it tailored it will end up costing that much, and really isn't worth it
check out stores that sell shirts in more than a size....ones that have neck width, arm lenth, torso etc

The main key is to have enough variety in your wardrobe that you never repeat shirts for at least two weeks. So if you're wearing something today, don't wear it again until the 25th, or people will take notice. You could theoretically operate with the bare minimum of 10 shirts, you're going to want some variety, so at least double that to be comfortable. 20 shirts, 7-8 pairs of pants, and 3-4 different shoes will give you a nice base for a good mix of outfits. A few belts and you'll be well on your way for four out of five days of the week.
For suit day, you're going to want a least three, probably 5-6, unless work is the only time you ever wear suits, which it definitely should not be. A classic navy and grey are essential, but you can branch out with some pinstripe and seersucker if that fits your personality. Some people like to be more conservative, but I like to jazz it up every once in a while with a lime green or Burberry ensemble.
Shoes should be shined at least every 10 wears, more so if they're patent leather. Socks should be the same general color as the pants, but avoid repeated patterns if possible. A nice watch is a must to complete the look.

haha. I'm not a complete idiot. I know my sizes. I know what fits and doesn't fit. Right now I will buy something if it fits and is available. Unfortunately that's been Calvin Klein, Van Huesen, Express, Banana Republic, DKNY, aka the cheap shit.
I just haven't had much time to research the better brands. I grew up not really dressing up so I'm behind. I blame my liberal upbringing.
Now I have a job and money to spend. I just don't know where to start.

Jos A Banks. Their suits aren't good enough to wipe your ass with, but their dress shirts are the best out there for your money. Just get them to size you up right and buy their slim fitting ones (can't remember the name...could actually be slim fit). Oh...and they are usually kind of expensive ($75/80)...but they have a sale every other day. So grab a couple then and they end up being like $50 with the sale.
