Side note: Is it a bad idea to put an incomplete project on my resume? Should I save that for the cover letter, or not include it at all? It's basically a demo page for a web app I'm working on. 6/27/2014 3:34:59 PM |

Position: Part-time Java Developer and Special Projects Company: Financial Services Company in Cary, but you would work remotely Pay: $40+/hr based on experience (we pay competitively based on your experience) Description: You would be expected to work 10-20 hours a month updating and troubleshooting our Java-based application. The application uses a MySQL database and Tomcat as the application server (so any Tomcat or Java web experience is a plus). The biggest requirement is that you are a self-starter, willing to work primarily by yourself, and able to communicate via email and phone on a consistent basis. If you are currently a programmer and want to work on the bigger picture, gain some new skills, add some experience to your resume, and make some good cash, let me know. I have worked with this company for 7 years, and it has been a great experience. If you know PHP or have any HTML/JS experience, please also mention it. 1/12/2015 1:28:51 PM |

Too many to list if you're interested in relocating in Santa Monica. TV is the area most heavily hiring, but we have a data services platform that services most of the other departments for analytics purposes, and Sound Select, which is from which most of the Digital culture grew.
So you'd be working on any combination of Music, TV, and "Big Data" products.

I moved to a new department a few months ago and we haven't been able to find anyone to fill my old spot - i set the team up to run without me so i could move on but they need a leader - slightly more than just a windows / linux admin - you would have a global team of them reporting to you in addition to a global team of DBAs - required to be in Atlanta but we're willing to let someone relocate over the period of a few months

Has anyone worked with a city government before in IT?
I've been about 4 to 5 years at my current job in the private industry. I like what I do but its a contractor position and im pretty much never moving up. Had an interview with the a city government for IT for their police/city/power/etc stuff. Infrastructure app type things. Pay is about the same, but better job security, less stress than manfacturing environment, and seems overall easier. Benefits are about a wash but it has a pension after a year or two.

^^ that's why i moved from smyrna to dunwoody - we strongly prefer people to be in the office on a regular basis but are open to working from home as needed
as we grow larger wfh is becoming more accepted - we are still in the process of moving away from our startup roots where things moved so fast we couldn't afford to have a bunch of people not in the office - we have a very open floor plan and while it's great for collaboration it can lead to out-of-sight out-of-mind situations because it's so easy to just grab the interested parties that you can find for a 5 minute discussion, make a decision, and go forward 8/4/2015 8:48:10 AM |

What's the salary range for that kind of thing? Is that even kosher to ask?
Just finished up a masters degree and am kind of curious what's out there.12/26/2015 4:22:39 PM |
CaelNCSU All American 7079 Posts user info edit post |
^ In my opinion it's kosher to ask, because the process most places is: 30 min call with HR person, 1 hour tech screen over the phone, and finally all day on site possibly with travel. There are exceptions where I may not ask, like places that are known to pay top of the market, but anyone else I'd get it out there before you take time off work to start the secret handshake. 12/26/2015 8:10:52 PM |

Def kosher to ask, although a lot of companies aren't up front about it, which is quite annoying when you don't figure out if the salary is below your range until after 2-3 rounds of interviews. Even thought there is quite a range gap from the low end of my pay grade to high end, the recruiter was nice enough to give me a 10K range about 5 minutes into our first phone call that was quite helpful when deciding if I wanted to move forward in the interview process. 12/28/2015 7:35:56 PM |
CaelNCSU All American 7079 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah $130k - $200k is common in LA and the difference is massive so its best to know if its an ad company that thinks they need tech or someone willing to actually pay. Bay area seems to be bottom end of $170k and I keep hearing that $250k is normal. I made that much a few years on my own but never working for someone else.
This is totally sustainable.

Since it's a matter of public record anyway, I make mid 80s and this is after getting several promotions that each came with 15-20% bumps. It's always absolutely unreal to see the numbers above, but I have to keep reminding myself they're not indicative of this area. I get the impression that a lot of RTP companies are around 90k and I can't justify moving (I don't live in RTP yet) without a bigger jump, so yea definitely worried about wasting my time. I suppose I will just ask early in the process for each thing. 12/28/2015 9:45:54 PM |

There are companies that pay $100k in Raleigh and had two coworkers that made $130k at the same company. I was making $100k in 2011, but only after looking for a long time.
I just had a friend from Boston move to California and got a $50k bump. 12/28/2015 11:51:42 PM |

Do bonuses/equity play a role? Usually there's some confusion over base salary vs total when discussing salaries. 12/29/2015 2:43:44 PM |
CaelNCSU All American 7079 Posts user info edit post |
I try not to conflate the two. The bonuses on top of mid $100s range from 20% cash to $400k in stock. Samsung and Netflix are known to pay on the $200s base before you talk about the other stuff. I don't have direct info for Google and Facebook but I hear it's super high based on the recent hacker news thread and 2nd hand info. One friend at another well known company pulled $600k after totalling everything on top of his $150k base. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10050430
