I challenge you to reassess who exactly the "we" you're referring to is because my "we" are in a period of global ecological collapse, decreasing life expectancy, and wage stagnation amidst ever rise cost of living. Certainly that "we" does not include the 123 million workers living paycheck to paycheck, 500,000 American children growing up with lead in their blood, the 700,000 people sleeping on the street tonight or the 450,000 incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses.
If a world with 70 million refugees, an $800B military budget, a 20-year ongoing war, and combat in 7 countries is what you call "unprecented peace", I ask you to reassess your definition of peace. 3/5/2020 1:59:24 PM |

Here is the difference between you, a socialist, and me, a free-thinking capitalist. I am not afraid to share opinions that conflict with my opinion. However, I can also be transparent and post both sides of the argument.
For any one who is intellectually honest, below is a good summary of the dispute between Hickel and Pinker, that looks at the arguments from both sides. The main takeaway:
Quote : | "Everyone agrees that since 1981, the incomes of the world’s poorest people have gone up — even Hickel has disavowed his Guardian headline, saying it was forced upon him by editors. Everyone agrees incomes for the poor haven’t gone up enough, and that $1.90 per day is hardly enough for a human being to live a decent life. " |

We're all impressed by your consistent intellectual honesty.
The takeaway is that $1.9/day is an arbitrary number that allows Gates et al to inflate their argument that neoliberal capitalism has made the world a better place, when actually $7.40 is the number we should be using for basic nutrition and life expectancy. That number has dropped from 71% to 58% of the world population, while global wealth inequality is growing. Any compassionate and rational individual should be asking why we aren't doing more.
Additionally, from Hickel's counterargument to Pinker:
Quote : | "The vast majority of gains against poverty have happened in one region: East Asia. As it happens, the economic success of China and the East Asian tigers – as scholars like Ha-Joon Chang and Robert Wade have long pointed out – is due not to the neoliberal markets that you espouse but rather state-led industrial policy, protectionism and regulation (the same measures that Western nations used to such great effect during their own period of industrial consolidation). They liberalized, to be sure – but they did so gradually and on their own terms. " |
Sounds the real argument is for state-run economies, not free market capitalism.3/5/2020 6:29:57 PM |

I’m actually surprised how little talk on here there has been about just how awful and dangerous the administrations response has been. People are going to die from it and it basically is an afterthought.
Again, not to sound like a broken record but the only one I’ve seen consistently beat the drum on how awful and why the response is disastrous has been Hayes. The rest seem to think of it as something political that Trump has to overcome to prop up his economy.

-its manufactured panic/media hype -the death numbers could be achieved simply by counting how many old people die due to cold any year with or without a pandemic -china did this to shut down production, consolidate control, and tank the global economy as a tantrum over losing trump's trade war -theres a meme being spread explaining how every election year has a pandemic 3/8/2020 9:42:28 PM |

So he's trying to keep the markets calm by suppressing the infection rate (we have among the lowest of the world) by not increasing the amount of tests fast enough? He's partnering that with blindly reassuring news.
The experts are saying we don't need blanket protocols because those with age and preexisting conditions can talk it over with their doctor. Everyone else should go on with good hygiene while clusters are handled on a local level. Its not the best response but its what you should expect from capitalism.

Its no one's fault. Not even Trump's. No amount of testing could stop the spread. This can't be stopped Its just a matter of how much intervention we need to slow it down and prolong it or have a lot of people get it suddenly. If its too prolonged, it will do extra damage to the economy but if its too sudden it could overwhelm the healthcare system. The happy medium is an amount of intervention where it spreads quickly but not quite enough to overwhelm hospitals. You'll know they messed up if hospitals overflow. That hasn't happened yet so the response has been fine. Italy messed up.

Trump is doing great, is blameless and very intelligent and attractive. Very fit. Virus is being contained, thank you Trump!
‘It’s Just Everywhere Already’: How Delays in Testing Set Back the U.S. Coronavirus Response A series of missed chances by the federal government to ensure more widespread testing came during the early days of the outbreak, when containment would have been easier. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/10/us/coronavirus-testing-delays.html
doctor started testing on their own, found a case, and:
Quote : | "The state laboratory, finally able to begin testing, confirmed the result the next morning. The teenager, who had recovered from his illness, was located and informed just after he entered his school building. He was sent home and the school was later closed as a precaution.
Later that day, the investigators and Seattle health officials gathered with representatives of the C.D.C. and the F.D.A. to discuss what happened. The message from the federal government was blunt. “What they said on that phone call very clearly was cease and desist to Helen Chu,” Dr. Lindquist remembered. “Stop testing.”" |
Quote : | "Still, the troubling finding reshaped how officials understood the outbreak. Seattle Flu Study scientists quickly sequenced the genome of the virus, finding a genetic variation also present in the country’s first coronavirus case.
The implications were unnerving. There was a good chance that the virus had been circulating silently in the community for around six weeks, infecting potentially hundreds of people." |
Quote : | "As new samples came in, Dr. Starita’s laboratory also worked their way backward through some older samples that had been sitting in the freezers for weeks, finding cases that date back to at least Feb. 20 — seven days before public health officials had any idea the virus was in the community.
The scientists said they believe that they will find evidence that the virus was infecting people even earlier, and that they could have alerted authorities sooner if they had been allowed to test.
But on Monday night, state regulators, enforcing Medicare rules, stepped in and again told them to stop until they could finish getting certified as a clinical laboratory, a process that could take many weeks." |
