So I followed some suggestions in this thread and watched House of the Devil, and while the 80s vibe was cool, the movie itself was not very good at all, imho. Nothing even happens until the last 20 minutes of the movie. I won't be watching that one again.

I went through Netflix recently and added a bunch of movies I'd been meaning to see, and some older 60s and 70s movie that I plan to see if they're any good. I started watching Nuke 'Em High last night, and I'm looking forward to watching Toxic Avenger.

Like someone else already said, I really like Hellraiser 1 and 2 (I also personally kind of enjoy bloodline, but also recognize its shittyness). Event Horizen is one of my favorites. Cabin in the Woods one of the best more recent horror movies I can think of

I just put Event Horizon and Cabin in the Woods on my Netflix, and plan on watching Hellraiser 2 soon (just watched the first one). I saw Event Horizon a long time ago but don't remember much about it.

I re-watched some of Devil's Rejects the other night. It's pretty bad.

Eventhorizon is such a spooky movie. I rewatched it last year sometime on Netflix and the only problem I had with it was the dated CGI.

Yeah that's why lots of 80s horror movie effects still hold up today -- they were all makeup and people in costumes so it looks a lot more believable than that awkward CGI of the 90s that was still in its early years.

Watched Fright Night recently.... it was pretty good, but more cheesy than creepy. Also watched Creepshow again for the first time in several years. Some of those short movies are better than the others. It was funny seeing a young Ted Danson and murderer Leslie Nielson.

I watched 1984's C.H.U.D. at recommended by justin. It was totally terrible. I should have known since he also thinks the Leprechaun movies are good. But it did have several actors who went on to be pretty big, including Sam McMurray (It, Freaks & Geeks, Christmas Vacation), Daniel Stern (Home Alone, City Slickers), and a short scene with John Goodman.

I watched the 1985 horror movie "House". Really cheesy, but it has some spooky parts, and it pretty hilarious. It has severl old sitcome stars... the dude from The Greatest American Hero is the main character, and also has Norm from Cheers and Bull from Night Court.

Ahahaha I remember that movie being ridiculous. Haven't seen it since high school but one part I remember distinctly is when the guy's friend from Vietnam comes back in zombie form and is like "DAMN! ROSE FROM THE GRAVE AND RAN OUT OF AMM-U-NITION!" So cheesy.

At least it isn't as bad as House 3 (or maybe 4?) when there is a monster that lives in a pizza and keeps trying to eat a girl in a wheelchair.

Watched some of Return of the Killer Tomatoes - it had a young George Clooney, even younger than when he was in Roseanne
Watched the Shining again - that movie is great, a visual masterpiece

^^I'd recommend The Asphyx. It's lesser known (was overshadowed by The Exorcist, which came out about the same time). It's the best Hammer studio horror film not actually made by Hammer studio.

1982 version of The Thing! Some of the best practical effects I've ever seen in a horror movie. Combine that with a very cold/isolationist theme, characters that aren't complete idiots (unlike most typical horror movie characters), and a very bearded Kurt Russell and it is one of the most atmospheric and truly creepy movies ever made.

The original version of the Thing isn't bad but was restricted by the effects of the time (1950s I think). The 2011 remake was decent, but an unnecessary retelling of the exact same story with too much CGI.

Sidenote: Anyone who is a fan of the Thing, check out Harbinger Down. It is an independent movie released this year starring Lance Henriksen that I would consider a spiritual successor to the Thing. Similar style monster but trapped on a fishing boat with really good practical effects.

I watched George C. Scott in The Changeling. Part horror, part detective whodunnit. Not great, but pretty good. I'd only seen Scott in Patton and Dr. Strangelove before that.

It may be a prequel but almost the exact same thing happens in it. I won't go into too much detail but the only major difference is the way that the Thing "arrives" at their camp.

I got around to watching The Thing. I enjoyed it but didn't think it was great. It was a little slow.

I rewatched Return of the Living Dead recently, it's as silly as I remember.

I also watched the full American Werewolf in London for the first time, I thought it was pretty good, and the transformation scene is pretty spectacular. I hate that CGI basically guarantees we'll never see horror movies like that again.

I watched Poltergeist for the first time in a long time. It (like a lot of horror movies) has some silly moments, and some family-friendly moments, but also has some creepy stuff in there.

I saw they're playing Goodnight Mommy at the Rialto this weekend, anyone seen that?

^I've seen it. I honestly wouldn't even call it a horror movie and the ending is predictable. There are a few moments of good tension and stuff but it is mostly slow buildup for the ending. Decent movie but it suffers the same fate as a lot of recent horror movies in that the hype overshadows it. Everything I read about it beforehand said it was the scariest movie made in a long time and stuff. Definitely not the case.

SOme great throwbacks to my childhood have been mentioned, like It, Pumpkinhead, and Killer Clowns from Outer Space.

I don't think I saw Tommyknockers mentioned yet. It's more sci-fi than horror but still freaky, kind of like Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

watched the first and second Halloweens. The first is definitely one of the better classic horror movies. The second one isn't as good.

I think I might watch Friday the 13th part 3 with the 3-D glasses in the next couple of nights.

Has anyone watched Carpenter's The Fog? I'm interested, it has Jamie Lee and one of her friends from Halloween in it, and the dude from Halloween III and the Howling.
