2018 commit De'von Graves was bumped up to a 4 star on ESPN. so now all 3 of our non-kicker commits are 4* according to ESPN. not a bad start. 4/25/2017 6:54:17 AM |

and why wouldn't they trust a 17 year old kid who had made a non-binding commitment and continued to take free trips and reciprocate the interest of other suitors
college sports programs have limited slots/scholarships for each sport, if they take a "commitment" and feel like a position need is filled, and the kid jumps ship, it can really hurt them, particularly in a situation where a guy gets moved up the recruiting rankings after committing
look, I hate to admit this, but he was dating a 6 (at best) and started getting some looks from 8's and 9's and who is to fault him, but similarly, who is to fault the coaches for trying to keep him from going out on date after date after date
all part of the game, and until the NCAA introduces an early signing period for football, this will continue to happen time and again, just sucks that these reporters feel the need to frame the articles as if anyone is really at fault, when the system is primarily to blame 4/27/2017 3:49:28 PM |
dmspack oh we back 25535 Posts user info edit post |
i think he's been decomitted for a while. maybe not officially, but he hasn't been listed on any commitment lists for State in a while.
can't blame him for feeling like the coaches didn't trust him. but also can't really blame the staff for trying to keep him from getting away. probably a real fine line between "trusting" the kid and trying to keep him from wandering too much. tbh, commits that are real early are nice but a lotta times should probably be taken with a grain of salt...especially for a program like us. if a guy commits early as a junior and then blows up as a senior and is getting offers from big time programs, then i can't blame them from looking at those bigger/better programs. or if he just changes his mind and decides he isn't crazy about coming to State after all. they're teenagers making life changing decisions and have tons of people in their ear. it's probably a real challenge to keep recruiting those kids even after they've verbally committed for a middle of the road program like us...a big name comes calling and it's hard to compete with somebody like Clemson or FSU even if we were in on that recruiting early. 4/27/2017 5:39:32 PM |

we've gotten a strong start to the '18 class, like ^ mentioned. Person, Leary, and Graves are all a 4* by at least one service or another. obviously the class still has a long ways to go before it's completely filled out. but i feel like a strong start to the season could big a boost for this class and hopefully help give DD his best season on the field and one of his best classes as well. because we lose a lot after this season. 5/15/2017 8:27:37 AM |

we've been hard after him for a long time. sounds like it's between us and South Carolina. probably doesn't help us a ton that we already have a commit from Leary in the '18 class, but we're still after Joyner too. think he's announcing on father's day, iirc.
also saw where commit de'von graves is starting to garner more interest from other schools. vt and tennessee are after him. hope we can hang on to him.

All of our recruits are going to be recruited all season.
Joyner is just trying to keep some buzz around his announcement, everyone knows where he's going. We would have taken his commitment, we wanted 2 QBs, but Leary was clearly a higher priority.
USC also wanted 2 QBs, but their other choice just chose Wisconsin so they went all-in on Joyner. 5/18/2017 5:32:07 PM |

Yeah hopefully Leary finishes top 11 and gives the invite to The Opening. He and Person are already recruiting hard for us, so would be nice to have both of those guys going to The Opening. If we could lock up Gwyn prior to it that would give us a 3rd.
Outside chance Leary finishes high enough to talk about moving up the rankings and potential a 5th star. Fairly certain Lawrence(Clemson) could have just skipped the event and still been named to the Elite 11 and possibly MVP. Dude has insane hype. 6/5/2017 8:14:08 AM |

what is The Opening? 6/5/2017 11:14:55 AM |

Nike Football The Opening: "The Opening Finals presented by Nike Football is four days of dynamic training, coaching and competition for the country’s most elite high school football players. Every position and every aspect of the game will be highlighted over the course of the three-day program. The Opening Finals is undoubtedly the most high profile high school football event in the nation. Last year it drew media coverage from Bleacher Report, ESPN.com, Scout.com, 247sports.com, Rivals.com, NFL Network, USA Today and every other major recruiting website, as well as being featured with eight hours of broadcast on ESPNU."
I think ~160 kids get invited and they all had to be selected based on performances at select major recruiting events(Elite 11 for example). They had a regional one a month or so ago and Ricky Person was the MVP at RB so he got an invite. We're recruiting Jovaughn Gwyn(OL) and he got an invite at the same The Opening Regional(Charlotte) that Person was selected at, so at least if he hasn't committed by then we could have 2 guys in his ear all weekend recruiting him. 6/5/2017 11:34:48 AM |

Penn State reaching out and actively recruiting Leary hard.
Would be pretty awful for us since Leary has been recruiting hard and reports that he's about to help us land 1, if not 2, 3* WRs.

Penn State just lost their big 5* QB recruit, so I'm sure they are looking to fill that void. They apparently have a bit of a logjam at QB for the next couple of years, so maybe that will deter a recruit? 6/8/2017 8:25:36 AM |

Leary is reported to be their #1 target and before he committed he said his brother graduated from Penn State and he was hoping to land an offer from them because they were a "dream school".
Hopefully he knows he was their 2nd choice and the road to play early is much clearer here. Would be a devastating blow to go all-in on Leary, lose Joyner to USC as a result, and then lose Leary to Penn State. 6/8/2017 9:28:56 AM |

^^yup...such is life as a mid-tier football program. get a commit early, he blows up, and gets more attention from bigger/better programs as other dominoes begin to fall in recruiting. hope we can hang on to him.
they are now doing a fall signing period in football (or was that just proposed and not finalized?). which could benefit schools like us that might have recruits poached by bigger programs before NSD in January/February. tbh, i'm not sure i care for the early signing from the perspective of the recruit...but i think it could help us out. although it's obviously not the Fall yet, so early de-commits and flips would still happen. 6/8/2017 10:57:04 AM |

Seems to be a program changer type.

LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
He wouldn't start 4 years at PSU, they already have "their guy" ahead of him so even after a RS year he'd be competing for the starting job as a RS-SO.
Plus he already told PSU no. They've moved on an offered a 3* QB that apparently UNC is after too.
That makes basically PSU's top 3 QBs turn them down. They're still recruiting all 3, but Fields isn't going back and Patterson and Leary are both solid. Obviously a coaching change would shake anything up, but barring that I don't see Leary flipping on us. 6/15/2017 9:38:53 AM |
