According to the sbnation article from 2016 that gets tossed around explaining the difference between blue/grey/red/green shirts...he cant play his freshman year. However airius moore was a blueshirt and played as a freshman so im sure theres some way around it or sbnation is just wrong. But thats the origin of that belief

yeah i found the sbnation article you're talking about. also found this from USA Today Sports
Quote : | "Meanwhile, blueshirts represent the newest loophole for FBS programs to accumulate depth while not affecting their annual numbers. Like grayshirt recruits, blueshirts are counted toward the next season’s scholarship total.
There is one distinct difference, however. Unlike grayshirts, a blueshirt is able to enroll and participate in team events in the fall. This allows programs to get the best of both worlds: FBS schools can delay a scholarship for the following year, allowing them to over-sign beyond the 25-scholarship limit, and get the use of a prospect immediately rather than waiting until the following spring." |
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/recruiting/2016/01/31/college-football-recruiting-redshirt-greenshirt-grayshirt-blueshirt/79603750/
the nc state rivals site also mentions that our 3 blueshirts will be eligible in the fall...and they expect joe shimko (a blueshirt) to be our starting long snapper. so idk.2/7/2019 1:52:42 PM |

Losing Downs isn't that big of a deal on the field for us, it's all about the perception right now.
UNC is going to push it that they landed another "4-star kid"(though 3* on some sites) and that he was a legacy recruit they stole from NC State.
Obviously landing a guy like Moose Jr, Patterson, or even Antonio Barber(potential UT flip) would quite a lot of that, but the UNC recruiting house of cards is built on all buzz/hype right now.
Honestly feels like UNC is more concerned with landing 4* kids than landing actually good players that fit their scheme or fill a need. Plus their entire staff is built of recruiters that aren't proven coaches. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens during the season, all that buzz/hype is going to disappear if they start losing as much as the last 2 years. 2/14/2019 10:47:55 AM |

Clemson is likely to have 5 commits on the OL by the end of the week, so far they have 4 4* OL committed for the 2020 class and the 5th is another 4* OG. Would give them 3 of the top 7 Guards in the 2020 class committed. 3/11/2019 9:51:36 PM |

Look, Clemson is on another plane when it comes to recruiting. Expecting to consistently beat them, even for in-state recruits, is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

That is a very good straw man you set forth, but NOBODY expects us to consistently beat them or even really to occasionally beat them, but it WOULD be nice to occasionally beat them. Mayes shows that may never happen outside of random luck.
On recruits they really push for that is. 3/11/2019 11:04:47 PM |

Guess what? We aren't going to beat Alabama head to head for a recruit a vast majority of the time either.
We do occasionally beat out teams like that, but it's rare. And it's going to continue to be rare. We don't have the budget/facilities to compete with them. It's as simple as that. 3/12/2019 12:50:16 AM |

i've said it before here. but the "build a fence around NC" thing sounds great, but is never gonna be a reasonable expectation until we (or some other NC school) rises to the level of a perennial top 25 team.
too many other premier football programs are right next door. and even other teams that aren't "premier" but still have a bigger #brand than the NC football schools...Tennessee, VT, South Carolina. i guess the hope is that HS players have a sense of state pride and choose to stay "home" to play for an NC school...but if the concern is proximity to home, UGA and Clemson aren't that far away. NC is unique because it's a state with plenty of football talent, but no premier football program within its borders. and on top of that, the 4 neighboring states (VA, TN, SC, GA) all have a more prominent football program in the state. and then...one more level to it, is that there's 4 P5 schools in NC and like 7 total FBS schools in the state. i know we're usually not directly competing with Wake or Charlotte for recruits...but there's still a lotta schools in the state for the talent to be spread out among them.
basically, there's a ton of schools in this geographic region and a lot of those schools have a better football program and/or perception than we do. if we continue winning games we can potentially shift that. 3/12/2019 6:48:19 AM |

^^the king of "no fucking shit" posts
Nobody needs or asked for an explanation why clemson recruits better than us. It's still disappointing when we lose a guy that visits us over and over, has multiple really good friends on the team, lives like 10 miles from the stadium and has a good relationship with the coaches. 3/12/2019 7:31:13 AM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
If it makes everyone feel better, Mayes said we weren't in his top 3. Some speculation his top 3 were just his last 3 visits, but I think Ledford was a major draw for Mayes here and with him moving on it made sense that his recruitment took a dip.
Clemson, Bama, and UGA are recruiting on another level right now. They get who they want and kids want to play for them, it's a no-brainer.
"Building a wall around NC" is never going to happen, too much national level recruitment going on these days, but I do think you can "win" the state of NC. The last 2 years I'd say we won the state, but that doesn't mean 4* and 5* kids didn't go to SEC schools or Clemson.
We beat Clemson and Alabama head-to-head last year for some guys, but it's not going to be a consistent thing and that's fine. Look at 5* Desmond Evans, if Clemson wanted him he'd be going there, but they're slow-playing him for other 5* kids they like more. So now you're looking at UNC and NC State fighting over what's left.
I'm not disappointed in losing recruits to Clemson(other than Dexter Lawrence), it's when we lose recruits to schools like UNC, UofSC, VT, those are the schools that are frustrating to lose too because we can/should beat those guys on the recruiting trail. 3/12/2019 9:33:37 AM |

I think you guys are mixing up disappointed with salty or mad or sobbing. Maybe the key is the definition, disappointment refers to expectations OR hope. I had hope, you guys are projecting that I had expectations, I didn't.
It's disappointing to me when a guy that grows up in Raleigh and has lots of connections to State goes somewhere else. Whether that's clemson, Bama, unc, ecu or even if he's so good the NFL changes rules so he can go straight to the pros.
I would actually agree with the Zion comparison except to say Clemson fans SHOULD have been disappointed, if only bc it shows so clearly that they can't compete even with some natural advantages. In that way, I'd argue Mayes is MORE disappointing than Lawrence. Lawrence was top of the line 5 star, we knew it would be a challenge to get him even with some natural advantages. That recruitment showed it would take random luck for that level of recruit. Mayes was a step down in ratings and we had even MORE natural advantages, so the hope increased and the failure just further illustrates the hill we would have to climb. Makes looking forward to acc football season pretty tough if you just take a "we can't compete" mindset.

Besides on a sports discussion board "we need more money" is a conversation ender instead of a conversation starter.
Also, anyway you're just backtracking from this wrong and easily disproven point

Do we have a chance to beat them every year on the field? Most definitely yes.
Are we realistically competing against them long term? No, that's delusional. Clemson is a (relatively) local juggernaut and a national power with a history of winning. We haven't won a conference title in 40 years. Sorry I'm not going to get upset that a top 100 national recruit chose Clemson. 3/12/2019 3:53:18 PM |

As long as Dabo is at Clemson we have no realistic chance of winning the conference. If we couldn't do it with a defense full of draft picks, multiple NFL RBs, WRs, OL and a "NFL QB", it's not happening. 3/12/2019 4:05:35 PM |

You can still go 11-1, get a great bowl game, finish with a nice ranking, and not win the ACC or make the CFP. Would anyone really be bummed with that? I sure as hell wouldn't.
I just want a 10-win season and being ranked to be a norm. I don't care if we lose to Clemson every season honestly. After we've hit 10-win seasons for 4-5 years in a row, THEN maybe I'll start to bitch and moan about not beating one of the top 2 programs in college football right now. 3/13/2019 9:43:41 AM |

Unfortunately Justin was either smart enough to not take my bait (or never looked at this thread) but my last post was Justins take not mine.
ANYWAY ^yes that would definitely be nice. But the goal should be to win the ACC. I don't really care if it's unrealistic and we don't have enough money, I want the coaches to maximize the money on hand to be sure that if the juggernaut slips, we are there to pick up the pieces. I will always root for us to beat Clemson on the field (and therefore I guess on the recruiting trail?) and when something I root for happens, I'm disappointed. Not as disappointed as when we lose to an equal or inferior team, obviously, but disappointed. I reserve the right to be unhappy when my sports team loses a game. You guys do you though.
