Disagree. Curfews are not the answer. Violence can happen at any time of day and people can remain peaceful even after dark.

The lack of leadership comes from local officials not engaging politically with the protesters. It’d be a verbal diarrhea of a post, so I won’t speak my full mind, but the short is that verbally engaging with the protesters shows that you’re listening and can act as an opportunity to let those requesting reform share their ideas or acknowledge they have none and walk away.

That’s a very simplistic picture for something incredibly nuanced, but it does work. Chancellor Fox wasn’t my favorite, but I recall once when we marched on her house to protest tuition increases. People were prepared to be out there all night, but she actually came out and spoke to us. After she acknowledged why people were upset, explained what she could and couldn’t do about it, and let us ask questions for a bit all of the adrenaline came down and we all went back campus/home.

There is definitely a lack of leadership in Raleigh with respect to the protests, but it has nothing to do with instilling a curfew or not.

Many Dem mayors have been fucking people over with curfews. Announcing them with no notice, shutting down public transportation, and then responding with extreme force to people on the streets. Then people get released during curfew with no way to get home and threats of being re arrested.

Exactly. Curfew doesn’t solve the problem and it actually creates several more for those peacefully exercising their right to assemble.

Completely agreed. Curfews (and the Mayor's reason for not instilling a curfew) were just the low hanging fruit, which is why I mentioned it. And curfews work for their intended purpose when you are coming off a night of peaceful protests followed by violence and destruction. It worked well in Fayetteville, as well as other cities across the country.

On a greater scale, it seems like the cities were the protests remained peaceful, are where the cities leadership (either mayor, police chief) are able to communicate with the protesters and actually listen to their concerns. The response we have seen from Raleigh's leadership has been either reactive or complete silence.

A lot needs to be done if Dems control all exec and both chambers. DC statehood has to be near top of the list. The modern GOO hates it and it’s residents.

Is there any good primer on the mechanisms aside from the constitutional text?

Why? Are they not represented fairly by having 2 senators and apportioned representation in the House?

Oh, well if you are worried about DC residents being represented fairly, then just give the area back to MD and VA, then there will be no need for a constitutional amendment.

But you aren't actually worried about DC residents' voting rights, are you. You just want the guaranteed electoral votes and congressional representatives for your side.

So the question is how many red states would try to secede if statehood were granted to both Puerto Rico and to DC.

"Rep. Eliot Engel became engulfed in yet another controversy on Tuesday after he was overheard on a “hot mic” saying he only sought press attention at a local event on the unrest over police brutality because of his upcoming primary threat.

“If I didn't have a primary, I wouldn’t care,” the New York Democrat told Ruben Diaz Jr., the Bronx borough president, as he asked for time to speak at a news conference on local vandalism."

Quote :
"Pelosi didn’t weigh in on the controversies Thursday surrounding Engel when asked about the primary, instead choosing to tout his seniority as an asset to voters in his district that would vanish if he loses. Engel has represented New York since 1989.

“Chairman Engel is the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He also has unique privilege, which is unique and it wouldn’t happen again ... he is also not only the chairman of Foreign Affairs, he is a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee,” Pelosi said.

“That wouldn’t happen again — that’s a lot of power,” she added."

It’s good, but not unexpected news that some temporary layoffs have been re-hires. It’s not really the number that is surprising but rather the month it occurred. I expected it in June-July, not May.

Though it’s disheartening to see African American unemployment actually go up. Wonder what was the catalyst for that.

I think the volume that unemployment fell is what has surprised everyone. This is great news for the recovery and for the country. I think this can be attributed to the effectiveness of PPP and the fact that America is ready to get back to work. Hopefully governments will see this and continue allowing businesses to reopen in a wise way.

I too am interested to see what is causing this. With such a large drop in unemployment overall, typically we would see at least a moderate change for minority groups and lower income earners.

This really shouldn’t be in this thread but to our point, it appears BLS had a “misclassification error” and that total unemployment was actually around 16% meaning the African American number wasn’t really an outlier.

I’m sure it’ll be the source of a thousand conspiracy theories that make no sense but I’m glad they corrected it and the report as a whole makes a lot more sense now.

I mean it’s performative nonsense for sure but it (along the bill they passed that will never we be brought up for a Senate vote by McConnell) is way better than the fascistic rhetoric still coming from Trump and the GOP.

I dont think it's helpful to say that something is better than Trump ITT. For most of the 2020 tww population, this thread isn't about shitting on the Dems from the rep side, it's about holding them to a standard from within the party.

Being better than Trump is absolutely the barest minimum one could expect.

^^ talk about the bill then. What do you like? What do you not like? What didn’t go far enough?

Complaining about performative nonsense isn’t really going to change things. I hate cringe stuff like that but it’s a sideshow.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1227376

Sadly it doesn’t matter considering McConnell won’t vote on a bill Trump won’t sign and the disgusting press secretary already said any kind of immunity was an auto-veto.

I don't have a problem with the the first half of your post (asking for positive attn on the bill rather than neg on performance), just the second half.

That said the performance can be a problem, politically, bc it signals to a portion of the base that you dont get it. My opinion on it prob doesn't matter much but almost every POC twitter I follow had some form of eye roll, at best.

The performative stuff is not aimed at POC but rather at white folks who need to feel like voting democrat counts as their part in the fight against racism.

Republicans won't even vote for witness testimony, no way they'd move to convict. Moving forward with impeachment would do a couple things including pulling dems of the campaign trail (especially if the VP is from the Senate), would just further show that impeachment is a dead tool, would give Republicans an easy talking point of 'Well our coronovirus response is terrible because of impeachment'

Barr deserves to be impeached, if not jailed. However, I don't get the point in it.

It doesn't even have to get to the senate. The point is the hearings not the verdict. The point is to show that one party is willing yo enforce the law and constitution and get the corruption on public record. The point is to give one more thing to keeps Bart and Trump busy and nervous to give them less time to implement harmful policy and suppress the vote.

But even beyond that, the point is for them to do their damn jobs. Provide oversight and checks/balances to swelling power of the executive.

[Edited on June 25, 2020 at 4:10 PM. Reason : All same reasons as Trump impeach except this one could be dragged almost long enough to skip senate]

It's the same thing, their job is oversight. They can hold hearings until they feel they've gather all the evidence available. If they honestly made a good faith effort to go down every path before the elections, sure send it over. But Republicans are going to obstruct at every turn so seems like they could easily have constructive, worthwhile, relevant hearings for months.

They know the senate will NOT do their jobs, so leaving the ANY of the hearings to the senate would be leaving the job unfinished. Uncover every stone follow every lead. This administration is wildly corrupt, take what they give you.

Frankly I don't care about a VP candidate being off the trail either, it's much more important to impede Barrs power as much as possible. And that close to en election, republican leadership will be motivated to get it over with anyway.

The ONLY power the House has right now is the ability to signal policy preference by passing bills, and the ability to force people in front of a camera under oath. It's insane to give away one of those powers.

Also, the childish response yesterday from just some people giving their opinions on Barr, imagine the response to damaging facts? Months of that would be terrible for Republicans.

[Edited on June 25, 2020 at 4:34 PM. Reason : W]

Oh and beyond their constitutional job, I would bet a very large percentage of their constituents consider their job to be to stop Trump.

Impeachment seems like a luxury when there is a high potential Barr is going to just blow off his oversight hearing.

And that is totally due to Democrats not doing their jobs. How has he not been subpoenaed repeatedly and ordered not to destroy evidence?

Well they do take all of August off and I assume part of October as well (in the lead up to the election?).

But if Barr misses his hearing and they don’t drop a subpoena on him immediately, I’ll be at the end of my rope.

Edit:

Just did some googling around to confirm Barr had a hearing coming up, it was scheduled for July 2nd AND GOT MOVED AGAIN TO JULY 28th. So it’s been rescheduled what like 3-4 times now? Dems are getting steamrolled. Pathetic.
