This show is god damned excellent.

I wonder how many seasons they're going to do. They've pretty much got an instant out whenever they want since we all know how it ends, it's just a matter of how long they want to run with it and how much story they want to tell.

So many fantastic performances in this show. Bob Odenkirk is acting his ass off in this one.

While it certainly appears to be a critical success, is it a commercial one? I mean that will determine how long it goes on. I haven't heard the kind of buzz surrounding this show that has come with others, such as breaking bad.

Loving this season so far

One thing I found odd. The partners acted like they were above putting commercials out like the one Jimmy made but yet they loved the mesothelioma one that they released earlier. They made it sound like their clients wouldn't want them engaging in that kinda of work. What is the difference in the two other than the style of ad?

^jimmy's ad was from the "I've fallen and I can't get up " school, whereas the mesothelioma ad felt more like a fact-focused PowerPoint. Jimmy also called out Sandpiper by name. Still, I think Jimmy going over everyone's head is what really offends them.

Jimmy is just a prop. They don't want him making real decisions. I also don't they particularly care if he's ethical in collecting clients (except for his brother). He's there until they seal the deal with Sandpiper and then he's gonna be gone. I think that's the point where he goes rogue - when he's had it all and finds out it (and by extension he) is just a sham.

This is easily my favorite show on TV right now. The Mike-centric episodes feel like they could fit pretty much right in the middle of Breaking Bad.

I consider this show good, but out of all the programming I'm watching ATM, this is probably the first one I'd drop. No huge motivation for me to tune in every week.

Of course part of that I chalk up to personal preference. Crime dramas don't do much for me.

This is going almost exactly how the breaking bad story progressed. We all look back with fondness on Breaking bad but forget how slowly the writers developed the characters at first to give complete background on each's transformation. 2 seasons from now you guys will be pissed that you stopped watching.

I agree. Obviously this show owes its existence to BB, but it has the potential to be as good or even better than BB was.

That said, I don't think it will ever do as well in the ratings as BB because "chemistry macgyver" scenes are more appealing to the masses than "lawyer/conman macgyver" scenes.

Good episode tonight. Loving the stuff with Mike. This has got to be the lead up to the final straw between Jimmy and Chuck. I think Kim and Jimmy cone to a head next week or in the finale and we get full on Saul to start season 3.

Given how badass Mike is I'm even more surprised that in the end he gets taken out after Walt manages to just shoot him in his car.

All caught up. Good stuff. I still wanna punch Chuck in the face.

Is it just me or do they use Kim's full name way more than anyone else? I feel like I hear Kim Wexler constantly.

That's a good point. I also didn't watch BB in real time. Binge watched most of it and didn't start watching Season 1 till after the final season was enjoying it's mid-season "break".

Chuck getting seriously injured + something happening to Kim will turn Jimmy into full on Saul. I'm pretty sure we'll see Gus Fring show up at some point too, Mike was essentially his henchman when he first showed up on BB, right?

Mike must have some kind of past experience with drug lords. How else would he know to go straight to the tires for that money? I don't think he could have gathered that just from watching the truck for a while.

I was reading the wiki today for Breaking Bad and noticed another connection.

Mesa Credit Union is the bank of choice for Walt and here we have the Mesa Verde bank.

^^ You don't think that during all that time Mike was watching the truck they might have put money in the tires?

Ummm, you can clearly hear an air compressor and lug nuts coming off in the scene where Mike is watching the truck.

Yeah, I think Mike is going to continue fucking with Salamanca after the news about the good Samaritan getting shot, Salamanca will probably have a stroke, Fring will get brought in to take over the territory, and Nacho will introduce them in a "there's a guy I think you should meet" kind of way.

I think Chuck's injury leads to him leaving the firm, Kim gets a partner offer at HHM and Jimmy decides to embrace the dark side.

I thought it was great.

I don't get why people get upset when they end a show on a cliff hanger. Isn't that typically the way to end a season when it's known to be coming back for another season??

^ a bad cliffhanger: you ask yourself "what happened?"

a good cliffhanger: you ask yourself "what's going to happen next?"

as for this season, it was fantastic on the whole. it's crazy how this show can have it's cake and eat it too - you have a great non-BB show with jimmy and his personal story, and then you have all the BB stuff with mike.

having said that, i thought the finale was one of the weaker episodes of the season. but i'm definitely excited for the next season.

Man, as a fan of film, I really loved the camera work that was put on display in the last three episodes. To start off, there was the truck montage that was all done in one inspiring take. Then, the penultimate episode had the office-design scene featuring cross-dissolves (which is a wonderful call back to the 90’s) followed by the one cut take in the finale that showed jimmy walking into Chuck’s aluminum cage, panning out to show the scale of the room and then zooming back in on chuck and his ladder to really show the depth of his insanity and the weight of Jimmy’s guilt crushing down on him.

Having said that, I really feel like they are starting to lean too much on what we know about Jimmy as a means to sort of push the character along, especially in the penultimate episode. Take for example the development of his counterpart Mike in one of the many blossoming story lines in the show. We all know that he eventually becomes a murderous hit man for the cartel, but everything that he has done so far in the show makes complete sense for his character: He is a retired cop in need of money with no real honest way to do it, so he resorts to ripping off criminals, which is something that cops do quite frequently anyways, so, it makes sense. But, Jimmy on the other hand, going from staging skateboarding accidents and TV spots to committing felony forgery with absolutely no build-up to boast of his prowess at falsifying documents… it just looks a little forced. It seems like there are using what we know about Saul as a crutch to develop his origin.

I think that they are doing this as a result of the direction that they decided to go with Chuck. I honestly thought that Chuck would become the main villain in the series that pushes Jimmy over the edge since the jimmy that we have seen so far, although quick to toss out a fairly innocent bribe, was good spirited and wanted to build something on his own that was legit. He didn’t want to be a criminal, but just couldn’t do things honestly without any support or patience from his brother. I thought that chuck refusing to let him use his name and practice law with his influence and pressure would eventually turn him into Saul Goodman. Instead, the show went with chuck attacking Kim in a way that is to be totally expected from a major law firm. Since Chuck is doing absolutely nothing wrong here, they lose him as a villain to some degree because it lacks the tension that was created between the two in the Sandpiper case where we had the constant battle between Chuck refusing to think of his brother as anything but a con man, and his brother yearning for a fresh start after putting in the work to become a lawyer.

Also, what happened with Sandpiper, the case that he loved and couldn’t let go? I think that steering away from that story took out some tension and drama that would have been useful to portray Jimmy’s turn to Saul. Now, it is all about what he did in the name of love for Kim, and I am waiting to see how they can spin that in a thoughtful and interesting way.

Yeah, the finale wasn't quite as strong as I had hoped. Some major cliffhangers and some good, "what's going to come of this?" stuff, but overall I think they could have spent a little less time on Chuck in the hospital and a little more time on maybe seeing how good a start Jimmy was off to doing elderly law so there's more for him to lose when Chuck drops the hammer.

My first thought was that it was actually some sort of fed that was on a lead and shouldn't have officially been there, hence why Mike was left untouched. I can't really imagine that a cold blooded thug like Gus would just leave hime alone like that. Gus would have confronted him for information and then killed him. But then again, since we know what happens to Salamanca, Gus has to be introduced at some point, so it could very well be him.

My guess is one of Gus's guys. I don't think Gus risks exposing himself or does that kind of dirty field work if he doesn't have to.

At this point in the story line, Salamanca has already killed Gus' business partner right? So maybe Gus, seeing Mike as a very capable hitman that wants Salamanca dead, sees this is a good opportunity to strike up a deal with Mike.
