he's spent 3 years away from coaching and has been watching other teams play for a living.
if he has any desire to return to coaching, you know he's been thinking about what happened.
obviously it is unsubstantiated speculation on my part, but i don't think it's entirely absurd to suggest it.

so he is 3 years out of the business
thats going to be an easy pitch to recruits. "well ive been watching teams for 3 years, come play for me, it will be awesome."
i too have been watching basketball for the past 3 years. does that mean i can be coach?
ill take the job 4/25/2006 12:15:18 AM |

Well, if he's really interested in coming back to coaching at some point, then you know he's thought about what went wrong at UCLA. He's probably talked to coaches, learned from them, and thought about what he would do next time so he didnt screw it up. So yeah, if he's interested in coaching again, I'd guess that he's learned from his mistakes at UCLA.
If he's only listening to us for money, then he's a pantywaste anyway and I hope he lights his hair on fire. 4/25/2006 12:17:15 AM |

eh, no, but on the other side of that...
People keep pointing out the fact that he had a couple of #1 recruiting classes, and still had that 10-19 season or something, plus never made it past the sweet 16.
Whatever I still hope we pull something out of our asses, but its not happening. 4/25/2006 12:28:04 AM |

i dont know too much about lavin....but im pretty sure evev if you get a team the year after a national championship, that you still have to be a pretty good coach to get them to the elite 8...i mean the players themselves cant do it, and its not automatic that they win again 4/25/2006 1:51:48 AM |

I've always heard Lorenzo Romar was the main recruiter on that UCLA bench (and I'd say he's done better as a coach then Lavin...taking a crappy Washington team to the top of the Pac-10...and he's recruiting like crazy up there too).
From Romar's bio:
Quote : | "As an assistant coach, he helped guide UCLA to an 89-78 triumph over Arkansas in the Kingdome to win the 1995 NCAA Championship and finish 31-2. Cameron Dollar, an assistant coach on Romar's Saint Louis and Washington staffs, was one of the stars for the Bruins during that national title contest, replacing injured point guard Tyus Edney in the starting lineup.
Romar built a reputation as one of the nation's top recruiters while an assistant at UCLA (1992-1996) and was credited with recruiting much of the talent that formed the core of the Bruins' title team. " |

not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but this is from dave glenn's blog (in the comments section) from yesterday afternoon:
Quote : | " (1) I got my first report that Lavin had an offer from NCSU almost a week ago. However, in most cases you need more than one source to "run with a story," so I couldn't write or talk about an offer to Lavin at the time. However, I wasn't at all surprised to see Mike DeCourcy's report about the offer (he wrote "according to multiple sources") on Friday. Mike may be the best college basketball writer on the planet, and he knows Lavin well.
(2) When Lavin left a message on my answering machine at exactly 6 a.m. Saturday, he apologized for "calling so late," so he probably was calling from the West Coast at 3 a.m. Pacific time. He talked for almost three minutes and said a lot of funny stuff, but (not surprisingly) he didn't tell me anything of substance. He was very nice, which is his reputation throughout the sports world. I'm sure he called at the odd hour BECAUSE he knew that would be the least likely time I would pick up. Funny: An old buddy of mine who was visiting this weekend was sleeping about 10 feet from the phone in my home office at the time Lavin called. Had my buddy picked up, just a few hours after a late night on the town Friday evening, THAT -- "yeah, you're Steve Lavin, and I'm Bugs Bunny" -- would have been an interesting and entertaining conversation. :O)
(3) Over the weekend, Beilein was having very serious conversations with his family and staff members about the NCSU job, and State officials asked for details about the coach's $3 million buyout. That doesn't mean Beilein has an offer from the Wolfpack, but it means he considered himself a serious candidate as recently as 24 hours ago. That's what makes Lavin's "offer" so intriguing.
(4) For whatever reason, some NCSU fans don't think I should be answering readers' questions here. My suggestion: IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Most fans seem to enjoy it. I've been very careful to label facts as facts, quotes as quotes, speculation as speculation, and opinion as opinion during the course of this search. I appreciate the feedback, and I appreciate everyone's desire for up-to-date information. Hopefully, this give-and-take is enjoyable for most of you. Thanks again." |

Beilein's players at least play a lot harder than Herb's. I always thought Gansey was going to die on the court or something. That dude never stopped running.
And since everyone else is using this as criteria....he beat herb...granted with our two best players on the bench but still....

Ideally he'd come here for a few years, improve it beyond what Herb has done, and retire hopefully when the market for a coach is better than this year, or even groom an assistant to take over. I don't know how old he is exactly, but he looks like he can't have more than 7 years in him. 4/26/2006 12:56:02 AM |

I just want a damn coach, so I wouldnt be too disappointed with Beilein, but I'm telling you...we dont want this guy.
He might get by in a few years, but we do NOT have the shooters to play his style of offense. I dont even care if we lost a bunch of games next year, as long as we go balls out and let our athletes run the floor, I'll be satisfied. I'll give the coach a couple of years to fix it as long as people arent bitching like they did with Sendek's offense.....which is guaranteed to happen with Beilein. 4/26/2006 12:59:05 AM |

wolfAApack All American 9980 Posts user info edit post |
I really wouldnt mind if we considered Whittenberg seriously.
I mean how bad can it be? Here's the thing....
State doesnt have random ass fans coming to games. Everyone that comes to State games has some association with the school. Most older fans that come in the first place know who Whitt is. Getting this guy is not going to kill our attendance, and if anything, I think people will be intrigued for the first year or two and come to the games if for no other reason than to see what he can do. If he can come in here and actually do something in his first year or two, he'll have no problem building recruiting networks and landing the players we need. Half of the players come here because the crowds are so good in the first place, and if Whitt can win stay solid in his first two years, the crowds are going to be insane....and it sounds like he's not going to put up with players half assing it either.
I'm beyond the point of caring if we get a big name coach. Just get someone that will be good for the NC State basketball program whether they're big or not. If they're good, we'll be back on top in a couple of years anyway.
All a big name mediocre coach is going to do is get us some media attention so that when we start losing we do it on a national stage. Let a guy like Marshall or Whitt work without the national media on their ass and see what they can do. 4/26/2006 1:22:42 AM |
