So is anyone going to give back any of that 50,000,000 that SBF donated?

If you "invested" in this vaporware, do you really have a case? Political figures should return the donations, though.

-10 for releasing Cheeto's taxes and proving his lawyers right: there was never any legitimate legislative intent behind obtaining them and Democrats just wanted to make them public. It was nothing but petty partisan bickering.

He was the one who broke precedent and refused to release them. So they forced release of something that has been voluntarily by all predecessors for decades. So what. It should be required. Small price to pay for the power and trust endowed.

Of course it should be required, but it's not at the moment. So pass a damn law and make it required (and for senators and congressmen, too), and then call the shitty Republicans' bluff and make them stand on the floor of the Senate and embarrass themselves like Strom Thurmond did.

But what you don't do is abuse an existing law in such a way that makes it possible to enact political retribution under the bullshit excuse of "legislative purpose" on others by publicly disclosing financial documents the government requires every citizen to file every year. That's just not how you do it, especially when you've got someone as venal as Bitch McConnell ready and completely willing to use that weapon against you.

Oh, and why the fuck did it take them 2 years to figure out that Cheeto hadn't been audited. Is that part of the tax returns?

But this guy, this is not my kind of guy. He busted every norm there was, so excuse me for not panicking because Congress forced something that by all accounts should have happened anyway. Have Republicans ever been stopped by not having a precedent for doing something? They're going to run amok no matter what. Seems better to expose the truth about his taxes in the hope that it breaks the spell on a few more idiots who view him as a business genius because he had a reality show or whatever. Maybe someone whose life isn't so easy will legitimately wonder why they pay more taxes than a supposed billionaire who wants to make America great again.

Anyone who doesn't already realize that Trump is a conman isn't going to change their minds over this. They've already drunk far too much orange semen to be reasoned with at this point.

Of course Trump is shitty. Of course he's different. But that rationalization for breaking norms has led us to where we are today. The pressure attempt on Pence to overturn the election doesn't likely happen if democrats hadn't gone apeshit in 2000 and 2016 with their "symbolic protests", giving cover to the Trumtards' efforts. Chuck Schumer's ridiculous statements about a SC justice dying in an election year gave McConnell cover for his shameless action against Garland.

I suspect that no later than June, the Republicans will be demanding Hunter Biden's tax returns, at a minimum, under the guise of "investigating legislative options for handling potential audits of the children of Pres and VP." And I don't expect them to stop there. All in the hopes that idiots stupid enough to buy NFTs based on stock photos with Trump superimposed on them will suddenly find enough lucidity to realize he's always been a fraud? Get the fuck out of here.

Democrats need to stop throwing lit matches on the floor in the hopes of persuading Republicans to stop wielding blowtorches and spraying gasoline everywhere. It's not fucking working. McConnell is playing them like a God dammed fiddle at this point

Bitch McConnell is 80 years old and not currently in power. He's a gamesman for sure, but there's at least some evidence that he retains a tiny bit of respect for institutions and norms. I don't care if they investigate Hunter Biden. He's a crackhead and a criminal. But he's not the President, and he doesn't hold political office. I don't love it when criminals are able to hide behind technicalities and game the system.

As far as what Democrats did, why are you adopting Trump's talking points as if they are legitimate?

You are an absolute fool for believing that Republicans would (or might) not have done those things without the presence of those Democratic actions that Republicans used as "justifications". Those Democratic actions were simply used as convenient excuses to justify their behavior to the public; had they not existed, other excuses would have been used as cover for those actions they were already determined to take.

Didn't the Democrats have to go through a number of court battles just to obtain Donald Trump's tax returns?

If Republicans are able to provide sufficient justification to the courts that would allow them to obtain Hunter Biden's tax returns, then so be it.

We cannot reserve fair treatment for people we like and unfair treatment for people we dislike. That would be a death spiral for our judicial system and for our democracy."

The Coz, you've got more respect for McConnell than I do, then. I've seen him as singularly indifferent to norms, second in that aspect only to Trump. He's been more than willing to blow past norms to get his agenda through, but as I see it, he's always used Democrats' short-term thinking to do it. He's always playing a long game, and he consistently is able to goad democrats into making changes that he then takes advantage of when he's back in power.

And it's not that the things democrats do are reasonable justifications for his escalations. They aren't. But they give him cover and allow him to effectively shift the Overton Window of what is acceptable in ways that he would not be able to had Democrats not taken his bait. And the fact is he's going to probably have another run at majority leader shortly, so don't think he's done scheming. I suspect he's going to goad Dems into getting rid of the filibuster completely over something inconsequential so he can come in afterwards and pass a nationwide abortion ban and probably overturn Obergefell, too.

They are not necessary justifications, either.

McConnell would have blocked Garland regardless of whether or not Biden made a stray remark back in 1992, for example.

Oh, I don't respect Mitch McConnell at all. But he eventually stopped going along with every single crazy thing Trump wanted to do, so that's why I described him as having a "tiny bit of respect for institutions and norms". Him having respect for something is not the same as me respecting him. But why are you going along with this idea that Trump was treated "so unfairly"? He's the one who always says that. The guy's objectively a criminal.

Been a bit busy with stuff, but here's an example for you...
"Equity" and "equal outcomes for all", aka, the war on merit.
https://wjla.com/amp/news/crisis-in-the-classrooms/fairfax-county-virginia-va-school-board-dr-michelle-reid-national-merit-award-recognition-scholarship-controversy-glenn-youngkin-investigation-school-meeting-fcps-college-admission-reporting-thomas-jefferson-langley-westfield-john-r-lewis-edison-high

TL;DR, dem-led County in NOVA hires an equity consultant who tells the school board to be "purposefully unequal," so they fuck over thousands of students by withholding National Merit Commendations from students do as not to "hurt the feelings" of kids who didn't earn them. School board is claiming "human error"... across at least 7 different high schools

Can you provide an example at the national, or even state, level? You implied that the "crazies" run "the party" in a way that Sinema must run. Surely that means something higher than a county school board.

Well, it's now been confirmed across high schools in no less than 4 counties so far. And given that it's entirely in keeping with hyper-progressive rhetoric about equity (tests are racist, 2+2=4 is racist, homework is racist, etc), you can't just brush it off when some fools actually start doing it.

^^^ Yes, it actually matters. It is an award unto itself recognizing being within a top percentile of PSAT/SAT scores. Colleges recognize it and it influences early admission decisions as well as eligibility for numerous scholarships and grants.
By not being informed of this, students, particularly AAPI students, were absolutely deprives of scholarships which they might otherwise have received.

Now, how much it affects admissions decisions is a bit of loaded question, as one of the cases before the SC this session shows (and is also an example of how batshit insane the progressive left has become). Many of the students affected by this move in VA are Asian, and, well, there's been pretty clear anti-Asian discrimination in Ivy league and other top tier universities. The TJ principal openly lamented how the racial makeup of the school (heavily Asian) didn't match the surrounding community, and sought ways to "fix it," which were roundly trounced in court. Colleges and universities have moved to "holistic evaluations" (read: quotas and other subjective methods) which have adversely affected Asian students, unless, of course, you think Asian kids are just less "likeable" than their black and Latino peers. (Seriously, look at the Harvard case, where Asians are consistently ranked lower on this bullshit measure than damned near any other ethnic group)

A huge part of that is bc Ivy league favor rich and/or legacy students. the other minority students are not the main thing holding back the Asian students.

Also it's wild that you just refuse to engage with the fact that "radical left" or whatever has almost no power in the national or most state parties; whereas the radical right has an iron grip on the republican party. The two problems are simply not comparable and is why these "both sides" comparisons are so ridiculous.

Your first point might be valid, except TJHSST doesn't have legacy admissions, and they are doing the *exact* same things the Ivies are doing. In fact, it proves the point: progressives are more than willing to sacrifice one race for another, which is batshit insane.

The second point, I guess I have to concede. It's not like we have a recently-appointed Supreme Court justice who openly argued that the 14th Amendment explicitly allows racial discrimination. (We do, it doesn't.) It's not like we have a head of the Office of Civil Rights who eschews any pretense of due process for college males accused of sexual assault (resulting in colleges across the country losing thousands of lawsuits, sometimes to males who don't even know what the accusation was that got them expelled for fuck's sake) and has now twice attempted to redefine the word "sex" in Title IX to suit whatever her ends are. (We do).
Even still, it's beside the point. The fact that Republicans are captured by their most radical members is precisely what I'm getting at. Dems and progressives are using that fact to put their own crazies out there in the hopes that candidates who simply wouldn't have a chance otherwise will be seen as acceptable as opposed to a neo-fascist takeover.

How responsible do you hold Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg or Democratic members of Congress for the railway disaster in East Palestine, Ohio?

My first impression is that the current government shouldn't be held responsible for every disaster that occurs on its watch, unless it had removed a specific safeguard that would have prevented the disaster.

I do, however, feel that it's appropriate to hold that government accountable if it doesn't put appropriate safeguards in place after a disaster occurs to prevent future, similar disasters from occurring.

We should probably learn what happened before blaming anyone.

To the extent government regulation (or lack of) contributed to the accident, I would consider both Biden and Buttigieg responsible as the incumbent President and Secretary of Transportation.

Not sure why Congressional Democrats would be any more or less responsible than Republicans.

I agree, regarding Congressional Democrats' responsibility; I was just trying to stay within the thread topic.

For what it's worth, without knowing all of the details, I feel like Norfolk Southern likely bears the bulk of responsibility for the incident.

Another good example of how insane the left has become. The city of Seattle has instituted training which tells white people that they are intrinsically racist, calls them white supremacists if they disagree, and encourages employees to intentionally discriminate against white citizens because of their "white privilege." Also, being on time or writing things down is a part of white supremacy. Supervisors were looking explicitly to target white employees for layoffs during the pandemic, and said so openly.

And another really good example. This one occurred at a private university, but it's indicative of how the progressive left treats any claim to hurt feelings as more important than anything else, including freedom of expression and speech. The fact that other professors couldn't even point out that Islam, itself, is divided on how to treat depictions of Muhammad (as proven by the painting in question having been created by a Muslim) is stunning.

The fact pattern of this scenario is quite ridiculous, and the students should have been told to pound sand. Instead, a professor was fired for showing a seminal Islamic painting in a class about Islamic art, after giving copious warnings in deference to those who might be offended.
