Generally if it has an empire waist and/or sweatheart neckline it'll look good on me. I'm leaning towards one of those ruffled dresses even though that is so not what I would normally get

I usually just change into a sports bra when I get home. It hurts to free-boob it. :\ Occasionally I'll treat myself and sleep without a bra, but I usually sleep in a sports bra.. Maybe I'm just super paranoid about gravity taking its toll. I didn't even want to show side boob for the boudoir shots >.< It's harder to make big boobies look completely perky

sports bras? for serious?

jesus i hate sports bras. i wear them for the least amount of time possible and the second a work out is done i am running to take that thing off

cant do shelf bras in tanks, they can't contain me and put too much pressure. i do like seamless camis (limited sells them)

i wear a normal bra all the time and usually just sleep naked (unless im sharing a hotel room or staying at someone elses house and i always have trouble falling asleep with so much clothing haha)

Didn't they release a study a few years back linking wearing a bra all the time to increases in lump formation in the breast tissue? I swear I remember reading that. Now I'm going to have to try and find that study again.

Found it, was a study by Harvard published in the European Journal of Cancer (1991: 27 (2): 131-5). Unfortunately their electronic back issues only go back to 1995. I'm tempted to go to DH Hill to try and find it.

Anyway, some of the findings:

Women who wore their bras 24/7 had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing cancer.
Women who wore bras more than 12 hours/day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.

And it drops from there. Their theory was restrictive bras adversely affected the lymphatic system in the breasts, leading to tumor development. I'm curious to know if they ever did follow up studies.

Makes sense. They also don't recommend underwire bras while nursing as it increases the risk of a clogged milk duct.

I just tried searching both Pub Med and Google Scholar and couldn't find anything... idk, to be honest I'm kind of skeptical about their lymphatic theory now that so much has been discovered regarding tumor development. Most of the stuff I am seeing actually recommends sports bras for any type of breast pain, including cancer patients..

That's why I'm curious to know if they did follow up research. Even if their concluding theories don't mesh with what we know now, that is still a significant increase in tumor development.

^ I think y'all have convinced me to get the ruffle one

Quote :
"Abstract

Bra cup size and handedness were studied as possible risk factors for breast cancer. Data for 3918 cases and 11,712 controls from 7 centres were used to examine the association of handedness with laterality of breast cancer; data for 2325 cases and 7008 controls from 4 centres were used to assess the relation of bra cup size to breast cancer risk. There was a suggestive (P about 0.10) association of handedness with breast cancer laterality: odds ratio of a left-handed (or ambidextrous) woman having a left-sided cancer 1.22 (95% CI 0.96-1.56). Handedness may affect the lateral occurrence of breast cancer, although this tumour is in general more common in the left breast, possibly because this breast is usually slightly larger. Premenopausal women who do not wear bras had half the risk of breast cancer compared with bra users (P about 0.09), possibly because they are thinner and likely to have smaller breasts. Among bra users, larger cup size was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (P about 0.026), although the association was found only among postmenopausal women and was accounted for, in part, by obesity. These data suggest that bra cup size (and conceivably mammary gland size) may be a risk factor for breast cancer."

I found the abstract from the reference you gave... I think the main thing to keep in mind is bigger breasts showed an increased risk, and women w/ bigger breasts were more likely to wear a bra

That group has done a lot of research on breast cancer though.. but I'm not sure if there has been any follow up on the type of bra specifically. I could see a lot of confounding variables in a study like that.

It's insane to think of all the breast cancer risks. the way I see it, everyone has a baseline risk of 12% so even if you're careful it's not a small chance, ya know? There are things that can decrease your risk (drinking 6 cups of coffee per day, taking Tamoxifen, etc) but I would be willing to bet most women don't want to go that route - I know I don't :/

^ Beat me to it.

The American Cancer Society and the National Institutes of Health state that bras do not increase cancer risk. The study you refer to was rejected mostly because of the lack of controls. Just as an example (from wikipedia, actually):

Quote :
"The Molete article also discusses the one scientific study that examined the relationship between breast cancer and bra use. This study, among 3,918 cases and 11,712 controls from 7 centers in the United States, found that premenopausal women who do not wear bras had half the risk of breast cancer compared with bra users (P about 0.09). The authors offer the hypothesis that women who do not wear bras are thinner and likely to have smaller breasts. The same study found that among postmenopausal women only bra users with larger breasts had an increased risk of breast cancer (P about 0.026). The study suggests bra cup size is a proxy for greater weight and obesity which are known risk factors for breast cancer, and that the apparent risk associated with bra use is more likely a reflection of known risk factors for breast cancer, such as obesity"

Six cups of coffee/day is child's play

Speaking of bras, I have a funny story to share. A friend of mine came from Japan for our wedding and she has big boobs especially by Japanese standards. I brought her to VS because she wanted "cute American bras." In Japan she can't really find bras her size.

So we get to the store and I tell her she should get measured since we didn't know her American size. At first she was really reluctant until the sales lady told her she didn't have to get undressed. So she throws up her arms in the middle of the store and yells, "DO ME!"

As the woman is measuring her, she asks if she's wearing a push up bra. My friend says no. So the woman starts poking the side of her boob and goes, "Wow! You're not! You have perky breasts!" So then I had to translate what perky breasts meant for my friend

Finally we get her size, 36D, and I tell her even in America that was impressive. Man, she was happier than a pig in mud. She ended up spending almost $200 by the time we left lol.

Yeah, when they showed us that chart in class dealing with coffee, I was like "WOO I'M GOLDEN"... but then it says 2 cups or more a day increases your miscarriage risk. So I guess you can't win it all

I just heard and read that about the coffee drinking today. Breast cancer is in my family so maybe I should start upping my coffee intake. Awesome! I will work drinking that much starting right now. (Even though one of my neurologists said that if I want to get rid of my migraines that I should cut out coffee all together.)
Also, with the bigger breast thing and bras...I don't feel like I can win this thing. I am currently not over weight/obese so maybe that is a plus?

What should I do, ladies? FRET FRET FRET (I'm not really fretting)

Well, if it makes you feel any better the obesity thing is still a controversial topic. We have had cancer epidemiologists flat out tell us they don't see a link at all then the next day have a surgeon come in and say they see a link. Basically, more research needs to be done.

How old were the women in your family who got breast cancer?

Just a word of advice for all you lady: some of the biggest red flags in family histories are women who had breast or ovarian cancer before menopause, any case of ovarian cancer (especially if other women had breast cancer), and any case where a woman had both breast + ovarian.

2 great grandmas and my grandma (all on my mother's side) all after menopause.

The two great grandmas actually died from breast cancer if that can be imagined.

My grandma had her right breast removed last time. She has had it twice. Once in both and second time in the right.

I wouldn't be too insanely worried since they were all after menopause (except it is a little odd how many times your gma had it), but if you ever want to get it checked out you could see one of my people

and at first I was all.. "bread cancer?"

My mom has ovarian cancer, she's being tested to see if it was caused genetically or not (did I say that right) we still don't know the results, she was diagnosed at age 63 (last June). I think it wasn't, she had a botched hysterectomy in her early 40s that left her left ovary inflamed for years, it was this ovary that the cancer started at.

There aren't any cases of breast cancer in my family that we know of.

Minka, yeah it still could be sporadic... Ovarian cancer is just so rare they usually try to test those women automatically. Do you know when she was tested?

And yeah, you basically said it right she's being tested for BRCA1/2 I assume?

it was just a few days ago, I'm not sure when we'll find out, probably at her next doctor's appt. I was thinking about getting tested myself to see if I have any genetic markers.

Well if her test comes back negative then you shouldn't have anything to worry about... what test would you be thinking of ordering?

I hope she gets better soon!

The reason why I ask what kind of test you're considering is because Myriad is really funny. If your mom comes back with a negative test result I would be willing to bet insurance would deny your testing for Myriad. Even with a negative test result you still could have a mutation that hasn't been studied much (small chance of that though), or she could receive a variant of unknown significance which essentially means they aren't sure yet as to what that polymorphism does. Myriad keeps track of people's outcomes with that same VOUS and later will report whether or not it is for sure deleterious or just a regular polymorphism (aka something that makes everyone unique and isn't harmful).

If your mom has a positive result, insurance will definitely pay for your test (at least they should, and if not that's ridiculous and you could fight it). Other tests out there that test for different markers (i.e., Direct to Consumer testing such as 23andMe and Navigenetics or whatever that company is called) isn't super reliable because they all test for different markers. However, if you got those test results and went and talked to someone about the results specifically that would be beneficial rather than just reading the printout the DTC companies give you.

I have no idea what test or really anything other than saying, I'd like to be tested. I haven't spoken to any doctor about it.

About my mom:
She was at Chester County Hospital up here in West Chester, PA. She was an in-patient for almost two months last summer. It was the worst time of my life. The cancer was all over inside her abdomen, mainly her large intestine, there was a large tumor squeezing it shut and causing her major bathroom problems. The surgery was very long and they couldn't get all of the cancer, some of it had made it's way up to her esophagus, there were pockets of cancer everywhere in there. All of this from one ovary.

The biggest problem was the fact that she couldn't get a pet scan while she was admitted to the hospital, there's some stupid insurance rule saying you can't have this done if you're admitted, you can only have a pet scan if you're an out-patient, no doctor or hospital administrator could tell me why this rule is in place. So because of this, her surgeon didn't have an accurate map going in of where the cancer was. The cancer was so aggressive that we went from just finding out it existed and in a matter of days it was strangling the life from her.

After recovery from the surgery she ended up going through 9 chemo treatments and her most current pet scan(last week) doesn't show any cancer for now. We know it will come back but we dont know when.

I just thought I'd share this here and now, sorry about my rambling . I haven't really spoken about any of this on here and it's been a big part of my life for the past year. I know I had heard of ovarian cancer before this happened but I never knew how deadly and how excruciatingly painful it is. It's been so hard for her, I never thought we would ever go through anything like this.

I bought these Mr. Steamy dryer balls last year and use them everyday

http://www.amazon.com/Allstar-Marketing-Group-MS011112-Mister/dp/B003E6RXVG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305730595&sr=8-1

I love them but lately the foam thats inside the ball has been coming off onto my clothes.

I only use them to get the wrinkles out of my clothes before leaving for work.

I've been looking for other alternatives to use and I've read a couple things that say a tennis ball can do the same thing. Does anybody have experience w/ using a tennis ball in a dryer to get out wrinkles? What does everybody else do to get rid of wrinkles?

Sooo, is wearing white to a wedding a big no-no? It doesn't look anything like a wedding dress... it's cotton for one thing. I'm just unsure. It's so damn cute and I've only had the opportunity to wear it once.

yes it is a big no-no. don't do it unless you want to look like an idiot or a rebellious idiot.

if you must persist you had better call the bride herself and clear it. just to make certain it's ok... but it's probably not!

and the best fix for a cute white dress you never get to wear? a box of dye... or 5. tyedye is hot.

Yeah, no. Even if you do call the bride and clear it (which is also kind of in poor taste, because you're risking her either feeling like she's going to upset you by saying no or letting you wear it even though she would prefer you not to because she feels bad) everyone else there would be like "OMG who is the bitch who wore white to someone else's wedding?"

^^it could be, but there's gonna be enough tongue-clacking biddies to make it not worth the hassle, regardless of the opinion of the bride or mother of the bride. if the wedding has at least some traditional elements, somebody around will care about that one and you'll probably spend at least some time talking about what you are wearing.
