saw a snippet of this from IC but wanted to get the whole paragraph:

Quote :
"Clowney's stat line from a 42-10 South Carolina Sandlapper drubbing of the North Carolina Tar Heel team - 5 tackles (2 solo, 3 assists), 3 sacks for a loss of 15 yards, 2 tackles for a loss of 17 yards and 2 quarterback hurries - doesn't exactly tell the entire story. Of course they are impressive and show his dominance in the game, but he could have been credited with at least a half-sack on two other occasions, he flushed the quarterback two other times that led to sacks and he also drew an amazing five offensive holding penalties. Basically, on nearly every snap he took in the game, Clowney was a factor. However, the 6-foot-6, 247-pounder felt it was just another performance on his part.

"I thought I played well," he said. "But I wasn't 100 percent, my shoulder was bothering me a bit and I couldn't do everything I wanted to do out there. I was also a little rusty because I just did a lot of standing around this week in practice which was frustrating. But they wanted to make sure I was healthy enough to play in the game so whatever it takes."

Clowney was lined up against the North Carolina left tackle on every snap he played and while he drew the five holding calls, he and everyone else felt it could have been more.

"Oh, at least nine or 10 times, maybe more," said Clowney when asked how many times he felt he was held in the game. "It was bad. I was getting grabbed pretty good out there and I think they could have called a lot more holding. I'm used to getting held in games, but this was bad."

The main matchup for Clowney was against Pikeville (N.C.) Aycock offensive guard Jarrod James who was forced to play left tackle. Earlier in the week James expressed his desire to avoid being on anyone's highlight tape referring to his matchup against Clowney. Following the game, James was asked how good No. 90 (Clowney) was. His response was, to say the least, surprising.

"If he's the top player in the country, then I'm not far behind," said James following at least a 20-second pause after being asked the question.

Huh? Come again? What about all those holding calls, sacks, tackles for a loss and quarterback hurries?

"I did what I had to do to help my team," said James. "Playing against someone like him just makes you better and now I have a good idea of how college will be."

Certainly it's unfair to call out James for being abused by arguably the best high school prospect in decades, but make no mistake about it - James is very far behind Clowney as was everyone else on the field. Inexplicably, the North Carolina coaching staff didn't put a tight end over Clowney, didn't chip him with a running back and rarely double-teamed him with the left guard.

"I would have liked to be on that side of the line to at least chip him," said Fayetteville (N.C.) Jack Britt tight end Eric MacLain who wasn't involved in the game plan much. "It was tough watching this, we got beaten badly."

When asked about James, Clowney was his typical honest self not pulling any punches.

"I've never had anyone play that bad against me," he said. "But he'll be alright.""

Delusion and over-confidence seems to have already set in even among UNC recruits.

You're right...we definitely broke some rules and we served our punishment. I guess my point is, what we did was some very minor stuff in DT's recruitment...stuff that UNC probably did as well while recruiting him. Does it make it right? No...cheating is cheating and we served our time. But it is funny to hear UNC fans talk about how we rank so high in NCAA violations and all that jazz...and then you actually look at them and the violations were pretty ticky-tack stuff. Still, there's no excuse for breaking the rules, but it's not like we're SMU. I'd say that the mess UNC is in now (agents, academics, John Blake) is bigger than anything State's ever been in.

The NCAA found no violations prior to 1984...therefore there is not even a possible argument to the idea that the 1983 title was tainted somehow.

And as for the 1974 title, we served our time in 1973 (a year in which we were undefeated and could have won it all had we not been on probation)...so how would it be tainted? We were properly punished by the NCAA and served our probation...once we were eligible for postseason play, we played in the tournament and won the tournament. Although I suppose the argument could be made that had we not broken the rules, DT would have never committed to State, and we probably would not have won the title without DT.

And in a different thread (something else about NCheatSU) they are arguing about whether State is 4th all time in NCAA violations or tied for 18th...it's pretty amusing...

That's even a dumbass argument. In '73 we got punished because DT came to State after he had already committed and played in a pick up game with an assistant coach and was not charged for a room because he stayed at a dorm with some high school friends. We got shafted on a shot to be back to back champs in '73/'74. And the violations Valvano ended up being found guilty of (the selling of shoes/tickets) was nothing that would've influenced players to come to State, something like having an assistant coach being a runner for agent would qualify though..........

This dumbass unc-ch fan called the mike and mark show this morning trying to call out Mark Thomas for always hating on unc. Mark asked him for specific examples and he stuttered for a minute then came up with something weak that wasn't anti-unc-ch. It was something Mark said that was factual about the investigation. Then once the idiot realized he was failing he tried to call out packpride for being obsessed with unc-ch. I wanted to call in and ask that idiot if he's ever read IC. Not to mention he must be obsessed with State if he's reading packpride threads. Lol

There ya go...I didn't know all the details of the violations in the 70s relating to DTs recruitment. I always knew it was some lame violation that wasn't very serious, but I didn't know when it occurred in relation to his commitment to State.

And I can't stop laughing at the College Matt Ryan < College TJ Yates that someone posted. Honestly, this season TJ Yates was a good QB...definitely in the top half of the league. Earlier in his career he benefited from having very good WRs (Nicks, Brandon Tate) which made him look better...but Yates can throw the deep ball. I was quite impressed with his play this season. Still, he's not even close to Matt Ryan.

Granted, a 31 point loss is not quite a 40 point loss...but I guess that makes NC State's 2008 team a top 10 squad, since UNC stayed within 40.

i hate to be a debbie downer, but i find it very hard to believe that this widely known story of our violations w/ DT is the whole of it. don't be like them, own up to what was done. it's what everyone does, there's no shame in it. we paid a harsher penalty than most for it, won our title and that's that. but something more severe was done, i can guarantee it.

This is what gets me about IC. They will play up some violations, such as DT's recruitment or Newton's recruitment, as worthy of the death penalty. And in the same breath argue that what they did wasn't a big deal.

This is what was reported by the NCAA. If there were more violations, wouldn't they have been reported as well?

Talk to a diehard tar heel about the investigation and you really get to see what the thinking they have is. Every time I talked to my friends about have a runner on the team's payroll, distributing gifts to players for years, they just scoff at it. There is no shock or embarrassment. They've buried those reactions deep down the same day they gave up their rational thoughts about the subject. No boatload of evidence, confessions, sanctions, or resignation will convince them of anything other than UNC is being picked on for being great and it's "us vs the world" when in reality its "unc vs it's own actions."

thats easily enough countered with "then whats 'The Carolina Way' supposed to mean?"

then they usually say "The Carolina Way" is something ABCers invented at the start of the investigation...then you just show them the youtube video of UNC students talking about it from like 2006

^I'm not holding my breath for any severe penalties...but honestly, their second-in-command on the football staff, John Blake, was receiving a lot of money from Gary Wichard, an NFL agent. Wichard also happens to have connections to some kind of training facility that a few UNC players have visited in the past. This isn't the SMU scandal by any stretch. But I feel like UNC fans ignore the Wichard/Blake tie a lot...that has got to be raising some eyebrows in the NCAA offices. UNC's program likely would not get severe penalties for their players taking benefits from runners/agents. But they were employing someone who was receiving money from an NFL agent...that seems pretty bad to me.

Cam Newton has been found guilty of nothing....yet. Auburn has been found guilty of nothing....yet. MSU, well they are irrlevant at this point or at least by Monday. No reason for Newton to sit especially since he plays in the SEC. tOSU guys got a five game suspension, that's one more game than Deunta Williams got, and one fewer game than Kendric Burney got and Deunta and Burney were guilty of over a grand of benefits each (aside from Burney's admitted honor court violation, but that's an entirely different ordeal). AJ green got 4 games for a grand. The NCAA didn't let Pryor off scott free, they just picked and chose which games he'd miss. It's going to be hard for Pryor to put up riciculous numbers being on the bench five games. Not only that, he'll miss the cupcakes stats wise. He's a 3rd round draft pick at best in 2012. Neither tOSU, Auburn, Georgia have an associate head coach directly linked to improper benefits either. But yes, the NCAA could simply say UNC will skate based on time served (i.e. season derailed). But the Blake stuff is the essence of what the NCAA tries to prevent, so who knows. I just know that if they are guilty of major violations and they keep the coach whose watch it falls under, the image will take a huge hit to everyone, not just message board junkies. I'm talking about the 45+ crowd who don't know how to turn on a computer who spent decades creating the "Carolina Way" facade.

Edit: I guess to stay on topic of IC idiocy, this is a website that trashes the coaching ability of Dave Odom who had 4 sweet 16's, including one elite eight, back to back ACCT's, Naismith POY, and beat UNC a couple times in the Stackhouse/Wallace/Jamison/Carter era. Now contrast that with their respect for Sendek who beat them once outside of the Doherty/Brian Morrison/Adam Boone/Capel era, zero ACCT's, and one sweet 16.

Nothing will happen to Butch until the NCAA has their say. UNC is gonna keep him sitting pretty until the NCAA makes a ruling so they (athletic department) will have a golden scapegoat or a golden cow of morality. They are covering their fannies hoping to not get caught. The carolina way.

Yes, it is working, but that does not mean this 49 year old traditionalist has to like it. Dont get me wrong, I dont like the PSU, Bama, and Texas bordeom-look. I can accept ND sticking with the golden dome adn Michigan sticking with their look, but a little change is good once in a while.

Oregon is throwing any ideas of tradition out the window. Not the end of the world, but now VT, WVU, and others are piling on. Help me out, I cant remember the other one that went boilerplate.

Just disgusting. Throwing out the tradition just to cater to a bunch of kids that are all about themselves.

Times change. Elvis, Buddy Holly, flappers, assembly line, and the internet.........gotta roll with it.

I hope UNC will not sell out and will stick to a more traditional look.

So do you guys want a coupld extra star recruits if it means going ghetto?

That was from a thread on IC titled "IMO, what is going wrong with college football". It's pretty funny...I'll be one of the first to say that I'm not a huge fan of Oregon's jersey designs. But that is certainly not what is wrong with college football.

I love how he says the jerseys are similar to something that might be found on MTV...that really is a horrible comparison. I'm not a huge fan of MTV or Oregon's constantly changing jerseys, but why does this poster believe Oregon's jerseys are MTV-esque? I don't get that comparison at all.

I guess this guy is probably in favor of going back to playing with those leather helmets and having no forward passes as well.

Several other posters agree with this statement. I will say that UNC would have been a much better team than they were had they not had all the NCAA issues - although rules are a part of the game and obviously those who break the rules should be punished accordingly. UNC fans are just flat out delusional. They might could have been 9-3, or even 10-2 with a few breaks here and there had they not had all the suspensions...but they were not even in the same class as VT who finished the season #20. No way they could have competed with Auburn, Oregon, Stanford, etc.

"Losing Shumpert = worst recruiting loss in 10 years

Most of our problems in the last two years can be attributed to not getting Shumpert. In hindsight, that turned out to be a devestating recruiting loss.

Shumpert is exactly the 2 guard we need. He can shoot and he can ball. Plus, he's a combo and he can slide to the 1.

If we had Shumpert last season, we would have had a better option than Drew when Drew was struggling. If we had Shumpert, we wouldn't have needed both Dex and LMAc, which might put us in a better position for the 2010 class.

Occasionally things that seem little set off tidal waves of cascades. Giving Orlando Melendez a scholarship was a significant factor in our 8-20 season, for instance. Because we offered Melendez, we needed to rely on Ron Curry because we were low on ships, and then taking Curry meant that we didn't take Jason Williams. Then, when Curry went football only, it created the dire need at PG that led us to Adam Boone. Without Big O having a scholarship, we could have taken Boone and Omar Cook.

Shumpert is going to be one of those factors, I fear."
