I went to a Smackdown earlier this year and saw Bray Wyatt lose a dark match to Dibiase. Didn't realize at the time it was a repackaged Husky Harris, but they let him talk as he came out, and he's a very good promo.

they stopped showing that camera for the next couple minutes to ignore that the crowd wasn't paying attention to their main event, they went from cameras from one side of the ring to the other

Yep, there was a fight. It was on youtube but WWE took it down.
That was a hilarious 4 minute arm-bar while they sorted out the fight.

how do they get the loud "slap" sound from someone like Del Rio's super kick? i just imagine ADR slapping his thigh as he kicks. sometimes even the kicks that don't seem to connect have a huge slap

That's exactly what it is. A slap on the thigh of the plant leg.

I remember about two seconds of Husky Harris in the ring, so I can't remember if he can work or not. Hope he gets a better shake than his brother did this time.

The best one at the thigh slap kick is Tajiri. If you watch any of his old stuff, it sounded like someone was shot when he would kick them. Also, it's generally the kicking leg, not the plant leg, but I guess it depends on the technique and individual. HBK used the kicking leg as well.

Due to Memorial Day weekend travel, just now watching last week's Impact.

TNA brought back their old Suicide gimmick (X Division wrestler under full clothes and a mask). It wasn't played by Christopher Daniels or Frankie Kazarian, but the guy they had doing it was very good.

Also had a nice couple minute thing before Angle's match with Anderson of Angle going up to New York when the American, Russian, and Iranian amateur wrestling teams held a triangular meet to drum up support to get wrestling back in the Olympics. Had Bruce Baumgartner on it.

Unless something has significantly changed over the past few months, no. They've got a few bright spots (Kazarian/Daniels), but not enough to make their 2 hour show worth watching.

while not great, and WAY too much Hogan bs, it's a much better show from start to finish than RAW. Kaz and Daniels are great, as are Roode and Aries. Bully Ray is gold on the mic and improved in the ring. On the downside, they're over-gimmicking the hell out of the X division and it makes me sad.

I actually meant to mention the Hogan shit in my post. Last show I saw a few months back had him out there cutting one of his patented "I didn't say shit but I did talk for 20 minutes, brother" promos.

The show would be better with no Hogan. But political bullshit, the power him and Bischoff have with his contract, you know how that goes.

Everything's apparently building to a match at some point, maybe Bound for Glory between Bully Ray and Hogan, he's in horrible shape, so I don't know how that works as far as him not killing his back/knees/hips/legs/hands.

Bully Ray is awesome on the mic and as a heel. Aces & Eights though as a group can just be tedious. Plus their #2 guy is ANDERSON! (although him being in this group cuts down on his "I'm being an asshole" shtick promos thankfully)

Problem at the main event singles level is they need some new credible faces and they don't have any. Main event wise, they had Roode's long reign and then Aries for a few months. That seems so much better than what it is now although I don't put that as much on Bully Ray as I do "what intriguing faces are out there to challenge Bully Ray?" I wish they'd push Magnus, I think he's very good all around and he'd be fresh.

At the main event singles level, the best thing they have going is A.J. Styles as an anti-hero face and unless they pull the rug out from under him he's being positioned to win the championship at Bound for Glory. His gimmick is think mid-90s Sting in WCW when he was up in the rafters, dressed in all black, didn't talk to anyone, and carried the bat. Styles has a match with Angle Sunday so face-vs. face after Styles attacked Angle with a hammer to the knee but then in the same segment also attacked Aces & Eights when they tried to bring him in to the club. Everyone had been wanting his help against Aces & Eights and he'd spite them or attack them. So it's not just he's against Aces & Eights, he's against everybody.

The best stuff in the promotion is the tags. Daniels & Kazarian are awesome. Roode & Aries are awesome. I'd love a feud between them, problem is they're both heels. They need to get the belts off Chavo and Hernandez because they're just a bland tag team but they're doing it this coming weekend. James Storm is now in tags because they weren't doing anything else with him, but he's good there.

The women are far better than in WWE (Mickie James, Tara/Victoria, Gail Kim) at least when Velvet Sky is not in the ring but no one is tuning in in large numbers for women's wrestling. The undercard, they need to refresh some talent.

Chris Sabin won the X Division title. As he was walking back, Hogan came out and remarked that Sabin would have the capability to cash that in for a TNA world title shot this summer.

Hogan came to ring, did a promo. Anderson, Bischoff, and Brisco of Aces & 8s. Hogan using a lot of colorful language and a middle finger made for an interesting promo. 6-man started right after.

Hardy/Joe/Magnus defeated Anderson/Bischoff/Brisco. Hardy pinned Brisco.

Backstage, Joseph Park was doing a promo and then Devon and Knux roughed him up and beat him down. As Park was down on the floor, you could see he was bleeding (the sign of his Abyss change coming).

Jay Bradley pinned Sam Shaw to get in the Bound for Glory Series. He doesn't have a chance of winning it, but in real life what a good opportunity for him to have all those matches with top guys.

Devon came out with Knux. Cut a promo. Park's music hit but there was no Park. Devon talked about how he was a nothing lawyer and then threatened the ref to ring the bell and start counting. So Devon defeated Joseph Park by countout.

He then said if Park's worthless brother Abyss was there, he'd wrestle him and beat him in a match too. So then Abyss' music hit. Abyss won the match. So Aces & 8s is 0-2 on the night.

Dixie Carter came out to announce the 2nd inductee into the TNA Hall of Fame. It went to Kurt Angle. Angle afterward cut a good real promo. Thanked Dixie, thanked the rest of the roster, thanked Jeff Jarrett.

Bad Influence pre-match promo. Christopher Daniels wins Best Promo of the Night.

Tag title elimination match. Storm is wrestling with a hernia and they've kept his in-ring down in the past month. Daniels after 10 or so minutes took a belt and nailed Storm's foot from outside that took him out a bit. Things broke down. Daniels brought a belt into the ring to lay out Hernandez, ref turned around and saw him and DQ'd him and Kazarian. Aries then took advantage of the situation to pin Hernandez, then flew sky high outside to take out Storm and Gunner. The two teams then had an 8-minute or so match. Gunner got Aries to quit from his Lex Luger-style torture rack, and Gunner and Storm are the new tag champs.

(title change #3 on the show, so probably not going to be a title change in the main event)

Gail Kim vs. Taryn Terrell in a Last Knockout Standing match. I had low expectations and they were easily beat. Gail Kim is the best women's wrestler in North America. Kim did her knee lock around the ring post that Terrell got up late for. Then there was an incredible HOLY SHIT~! spot. Kim was across the ring and tried to do a battering ram spot into Terrell, Terrell moves, and Kim hits a chair that was in front of the ring post, and lands outside the ring. I'm just stunned at this. Terrell then gives Kim her own move. They move to the ramp and do some stuff there, Kim attempts to give Terrell a piledriver or something, but she fails, and Terrell gives her an RKO off the ramp. Both down for awhile, ODB as ref is counting and it was hard to hear the count because the crowd was chanting "this is awesome". Terrell got up at 9, and Kim couldn't beat the count. Best women's match I've seen in a long time and they gave them time.

Styles vs. Angle. Very good match. Angle would never allow himself to be outshone by a women's match preceding him. Angle wins. Odd. I figured Styles would. I guess technically it doesn't matter since Styles can just win the Bound for Glory Series, and he can get his win back against Angle then if he's going to be getting a title shot. (Not a bad idea for a Bound for Glory Series Final.)

Pre-match promo from Bully Ray. He talks about No Holds Barred means nothing's banned, but talk about how there was still one move wrestlers wouldn't do to one another, the piledriver, and he would win with it tonight.

Bully Ray retains the TNA title. Mid-match Ray puts Sting through a title. Covers and Sting gets his arm up. Then Ray goes gets a switchblade and actually tears up the ring to expose the plywood boards underneath. Gives Sting a piledriver and Sting still kicks out. Sting does a scorpion death drop, almost has Ray pinned and out comes Aces & Eights. They beat up Sting for a minute and then Sting gives all of them low blows (he's been taking lessons from Flair) and throws them out. Taz throws Ray a chain but he overthrows and Sting catches it instead and nails Bully. Covers and Hebner gets pulled out of the ring by Devon. Sting gets to Devon and nails him with the chain and then goes up top. In the meantime Anderson hands Ray the hammer and as Sting comes off the top Ray hits him to get a 1-2-3.

Raw opens with Stephanie coming out. She talks about how she is banning her husband from competing. She said she was not going to let Hunter risk his health to fight Curtis Axel "who is quite frankly beneath him".

"who is quite frankly beneath him"

Stephanie is the Head of Creative. They've been pushing this guy for 2 weeks and this is the crap they do! No wonder it's impossible for anyone to get over!

Vince then came out ("we're going against the Pacers and the Heat, let's bring out Vince"), but that line is insane.

2 TNA items:

-they dropped Todd Kenely as commentator effective after Slammiversary

-they've signed Rampage Jackson

Quote :
"Spike TV annnounced today it had signed a multi-year contract with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson for both MMA and pro wrestling, similar to the deal they had signed with King Mo Lawal.

The signing was part of a joint announcement with Kevin Kay of Spike, Bjorn Rebney of Bellator and Dixie Carter of TNA.

They noted that Jackson's match with Dan Henderson on Spike was one of the most-viewed cable TV MMA matches of all-time, and that his season coaching Ultimate Fighter against Rashad Evans was the top rated season in the history of the show (largely due to the presence of Kimbo Slice).

A press conference is being scheduled tomorrow morning in Los Angeles.

Jackson will star in a Spike TV reality series and do other projects with the network. The reality series will build to his Bellator debut. He will also be used in some fashion on Impact Wrestling.

Daniel Bryan's match with Ryback last night was quite good, which says a whole hell of a lot about how awesome Bryan is.

He's got the entire crowd in the palm of his hand, hanging on his every move. Giant YES chants every time he hits a kick, and when he does his "hulk up" in the corner before his dropkicks, people are going insane.

I think the heel turn they're teasing with Bryan right now is the wrong thing to do with him being so over, but I'm not sure they have a choice. None of the heels in the company are super credible, and Bryan is showing week after week that he can put on a great match with anybody.

The question mark in the heel landscape is Punk; coming back in Chicago he's going to get a huge face reaction, and I'm not sure what the plan is going to be going forward from there.

The heels are credible compared to the faces. Orton is a horrible face and desperately wants to turn heel, and after that you have...del Rio and Sheamus, neither of which have set the world on fire. He's needed as a right below main event face, and I agree the heel turn is the wrong thing to do. That means Kane does his 86th turn.

Is that a joke? Shaemus is the 2nd most over with young fans (which WWE caters to), only behind Cena.

-del Rio is awful as a face and still wasn't huge as a heel, but got more reaction as heel.
-Orton and Punk's heel characters are the best because they're "badass likable" ... aka the male 18-35 group tends to like them when everyone else hates them. When Mark Henry comes back, I think this is how he will roll.

I don't see what they're doing with Bryan as a heel turn. I just think it's an ENORMOUS push, a la Shaemus. I bet whenever they decide to take the strap off Cena, it'll go to Bryan.

(well they should cater to everyone)

He's so over the post-WrestleMania crowd buried a Sheamus-Orton match and people thought Mark Henry was the face in his match with him at the last PPV. (I blame the booking for that, not Sheamus personally.)

^ it's not for everybody, I've only watched a couple of their shows but I've enjoyed it when I did

(for everyone else, it's a lucha promotion around Philadelphia that's very family-friendly and think "live action comic book", unlike a lot of indies they've built a good niche for themselves)

Anyway, they had a big show (by their standards) iPPV this past weekend, and everyone is talking about the end of the show. And this is an indy so there is a limit to the interest they get, but still everyone is talking about it, and the finish was planned, it wasn't a screwjob or monumental f*ckup or anything.

In the runup to the show they were teasing that the promotion would fold, or would splinter (they're very influenced by comic books, so think the "Multiverse"). Their season that ended Sunday all the shows were based on Watchmen. And they decided this for the end of the show.

Quote :
"Chikara brought its fun-loving, “Anything can and will happen” flavor of pro wrestling to the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia, Penn., as well as to an internet audience via SMVod.com. But with a great show came great controversy.

In the main event, Grand Champion Eddie Kingston and challenger Icarus fought to a no-contest. Herein lies the aforementioned controversy. After a match that primarily had the crowd divided, Kingston inadvertently took out the referee and began using a steel chair on Icarus. The chair was originally meant for Icarus’ role model Marty Jannetty, who did not make the show. We had nearfalls and visionary falls for both men until Condor Security hit the ring, led by Chikara’s director of Fun Wink Vavasseur. Vavasseur ordered security to take everything apart, which led to the security team forcefully removing Kingston, Icarus, and referee Bryce Remsburg from the ring. They began dismantling the entire set, and the iPPV feed suddenly went off the air in a “Fade to black” style. More reportedly happened at the venue itself, and perhaps readers who attended the show can add to this report."

At the event, they were throwing fans out of the building after the show ended and taking up their chairs.

It's a promotion too where they still live by kayfabe. The wrestlers under masks, most of them it's not out what their real names are. So no one's talking about whether the promotion's actually folded or they're going to have show future shows or just the Chikara name is dead because the booker and promoter and wrestlers aren't talking.

Quite the bizarre angle...
