Facebook and Twitter reveal Russian meddling was worse than once thought

Quote :
"Some 126 million people — about one-third of all Americans — received Facebook content created by Russia between January 2015 and August 2017. Twitter also estimates that more than 36,700 accounts on its platform may be associated with Russia, generating around 288 million impressions.

That’s a far greater reach than either social network initially told the public.

Originally, Facebook said that about only about 10 million Americans received content created by the Kremlin-supported accounts."

Apparently the DNC colluded with Russia to lose and Manafort was planted by Podesta as a long game ploy to take down Trump, or something like that according to r/the_donald

From a logical stand point it doesn’t even make sense.

Clinton campaign was so badly run, though, maybe they didn’t realize the election was in November so they just didn’t release the Dossier.

Also, if that is the case it ruins 20 years of evil genius narratives. If they are that dumb how did they get away with so many murders???

In other news, Trump is shook.

It'll be really fun to watch them try the "i don't know her" defense when it's Donald Trump Jr. or Jared Kushner being indicted. Hey there were just campaign volunteers too!

I have little doubt Trump probably doesn’t remember Papa. He didn’t give a shit about policy and never thought he’d win. But that’s the price of bullshitting on the record. You can deny knowledge of someone when you literally claim they are part of your foreign policy team and talk about how great they are.

I didn't even realize this was possible. Mueller convinced a judge to waive Manafort's attorney-client privilege.

This is clearly outside my area of expertise, but it seems like you would have to have absolutely damning evidence that Manafort and/or his lawyers had told you lies in order to do this.

Now, that^ story claims that there is no evidence if any meeting was ever held, however we do know that Carter Page went to Moscow and met with Rosfnet executives

here is a timeline:
- in April, Papa goes to London and met with the professor to talk about the hacked clinton emails (before it was known)
- next he sends a bunch of emails up the chain about setting up a meeting, manafort says they need someone low-level so as not to send any signals
- in July, Carter Page goes to Moscow. According to the Steele dossier in return for Putin getting sanction relief (we know Trump spoke to Putin directly about this, that is what the "adoptions" talk was about), he would get a brokerage fee of 19.5% in Rosfnet but Putin needs confirmation from Trump for the deal.
- Page publicly admitted to meeting Rosfnet executives
- On July 27 Trump says "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find Hillary Clinton's 30,000 e-mails"
- In December 19.5% if Rosfnet is sold and moved through a series of shell companies.

Edit:
Here is page admitting to meeting with Rosfnet:

^^ Not really. If you fill up your passport, you apply for a new passport. Once issued, the full passport is no longer valid. .

That said, it likely does have to do with frequent travel, either due to the countries visited or the frequency of travel to non-visa waiver countries.

^ This used to be the case, but not anymore. The US did away with adding pages a few years ago and now require people with full passports to apply for a new book.

If you travel a lot, you should def opt for the larger passport

Some people apply for new passports because they've traveled through Israel and need to travel to other Arab countries. You're not getting into Saudi Arabia with an Israeli stamp, or a stamp from neighboring Egypt or Jordan indicating that you passed through Israel. He could be keeping multiple passports for preventing other countries from knowing where he has been.

Do the old passports not get taken out of the system when you apply for a new passport? I had a coworker explain how they kept two passports, one for Israel and one for everywhere else before, so I assume not?

You know, it's also entirely possible he was issued diplomatic passports, though I highly doubt it. I guess it would depend if he was ever sent overseas as a representative of the U.S. government in some manner.

Quote :
"Sessions was asked by Senator Al Franken, “If there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do?” Sessions responded: “Senator Franken, I’m not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I didn’t have—did not have communications with the Russians, and I’m unable to comment on it.”

But George Papadopoulos’s guilty plea indicates that there were attempts in the Trump campaign to arrange a meeting with Putin, and that Sessions was aware of them. As CNN reports this morning, “The chairman of Trump’s national security team, then Alabama Senator and now Attorney General Jeff Sessions, shut down the idea of a Putin meeting at the March 31, 2016, gathering, according to the source. His reaction was confirmed with another source who had discussed Sessions’s role.”"

Heard a theory that he'd been flipped by Mueller, hence his weird ass answers in his most recent Senate Intelligence Committee hearing.

Answers like "I can't answer that because the President might invoke executive privilege."

Has he invoked it?

"No."

Then why can't you answer the question?

*repeat

He already met with Mueller beforehand and any testimony he may have given could have been sealed, hence his inability to testify openly to Congress.

"The Justice Department has identified more than six members of the Russian government involved in hacking the Democratic National Committee’s computers and swiping sensitive information that became public during the 2016 presidential election, according to people familiar with the investigation."

WSJ is pay walled, so: https://www.engadget.com/2017/11/02/us-doj-charges-russian-officials-dnc-hacking/

Quote :
"Is Russia's hacking of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails a "hoax," as Donald Trump maintains? The US Department of Justice reportedly doesn't think so. It has identified six Russian government officials involved in hacking the DNC and using the information against candidate Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election. Prosecutors have enough evidence to bring charges against those individuals by next year, according to a report from the WSJ.

The information supports claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin is behind a coordinated effort to influence US elections, as US intelligence has claimed since last year. Talks about a criminal case are in the early stages. The inquiry is being conducted by Robert Mueller, in cooperation with federal prosecutors and agents in Washington, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Philadelphia, according to the report. The team has identified both military and intelligence hackers."

from WSJ above:

Quote :
"The Justice Department has identified more than six members of the Russian government involved in hacking the Democratic National Committee’s computers and swiping sensitive information that became public during the 2016 presidential election, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Prosecutors and agents have assembled evidence to charge the Russian officials and could bring a case next year, these people said. Discussions about the case are in the early stages, they said.

If filed, the case would provide the clearest picture yet of the actors behind the DNC intrusion. U.S. intelligence agencies have attributed the attack to Russian intelligence services, but haven't provided detailed information about how they concluded those services were responsible, or any details about the individuals allegedly involved.

The high-profile hack of the DNC’s computers played a central role in the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment in January that “Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the U.S. presidential election.” Mr. Putin and the Russian government have denied meddling in the U.S. election.

Thousands of the DNC’s emails and other data, as well as emails from the personal account of John Podesta, who served as campaign chairman to 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, were made public by WikiLeaks last year.

The pinpointing of particular Russian military and intelligence hackers highlights the exhaustive nature of the government’s probe. It also suggests the eagerness of some federal prosecutors and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents to file charges against those responsible, even if the result is naming the alleged perpetrators publicly and making it difficult for them to travel, rather than incarcerating them. Arresting Russian operatives is highly unlikely, people familiar with the probe said.

People familiar with the investigation drew the parallel to the Justice Department’s decision in March to charge two Russian operatives and two others with hacking into Yahoo’s computers starting in 2014 and pilfering information about 500 million accounts, one of the largest data breaches in U.S. history. One of the defendants in the Yahoo case, a Canadian national, was arrested and has pleaded not guilty; the other defendants are believed to be in Russia.

Last December, the Democratic administration of then-President Barack Obama imposed sanctions on Russia’s military-intelligence agency, which uses the acronym GRU, and Russia’s Federal Security Service, Russia’s equivalent to the Central Intelligence Agency, in response to the DNC and other hacks. It also named several individuals, including one who was later charged in the Yahoo case.

Federal prosecutors and federal agents working in Washington, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Philadelphia have been collaborating on the DNC investigation. The inquiry is being conducted separately from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election and any possible collusion by President Donald Trump’s associates.

Mr. Trump, a Republican, has denied that he or his campaign colluded with Moscow.

Mr. Mueller’s investigation resulted this week in money-laundering and tax-related charges against Paul Manafort, former chairman of Mr. Trump’s campaign, and Richard Gates, Mr. Manafort’s business associate who also worked on the campaign.

George Papadopoulos, who served as a foreign-policy adviser on Mr. Trump’s campaign, pleaded guilty last month to lying to FBI agents about his dealings with Russian go-betweens during the campaign. Messrs. Manafort and Gates pleaded not guilty earlier this week.

A Justice Department spokesman and an FBI spokeswoman declined to comment on the identification of the Russian government officials allegedly behind the DNC hack. The Russian Embassy didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Trump has cast doubts on Russia’s role in the hack. In a series of tweets this past June, the president called the idea that Russia hacked the DNC a “big Dem HOAX.” He added that it was “a big Dem scam and excuse for losing the election!”

High-ranking U.S. intelligence and law-enforcement officials have consistently stood by the intelligence community’s January assessment.

In that document, the intelligence community said GRU, “probably began cyber operations aimed at the U.S. election by March 2016.” It said the GRU had exfiltrated “large volumes of data” from the DNC by May.

In a statement Thursday, the DNC said: “It is irrefutable that Russia hacked the DNC and interfered in our election to help elect President Trump. The Kremlin must be held accountable for its attack on our country.”

The Justice Department and FBI investigation into the DNC hack had been under way for nearly a year, by prosecutors and agents with cyber expertise, before Mr. Mueller was appointed in May. Rather than take over the relatively technical cyber investigation, Mr. Mueller and the Justice Department agreed that it would be better for the original prosecutors and agents to retain that aspect of the case, the people familiar with the Justice Department-FBI probe said.

It is unclear if prosecutors will hold back filing charges until Mr. Mueller completes his investigation or wait to identify others who may have played a role in the DNC hack. Investigators believe dozens of others may have played a role in the cyberattack, the people said.

While the alleged hackers are unlikely to be arrested and prosecuted in the U.S., the Justice Department has been bringing more cases against alleged hackers acting on behalf of foreign governments as a means of making the allegations public and potentially forcing a change in behavior, people familiar with the strategy said.

In the first such case, in 2014, the Justice Department indicted five Chinese military officers, alleging they had hacked U.S. companies’ computers to steal trade secrets. Officials said they witnessed a drop in such activity following the indictment. The defendants are believed to be in China; the Chinese government denied the allegations.

In a 2016 case, prosecutors charged hackers allegedly linked to the Iranian government. The defendants are believed to be outside the U.S.

I hope so. The cyber expertise kind of implies it to me then again they could just be tracing logs and correlating with intelligence they have. But my guess is if they can bring charges, they have physical proof.

"Washington (CNN)Attorney General Jeff Sessions is once again under scrutiny on Capitol Hill regarding his candor about Russia and the Trump campaign amid revelations that he rejected a suggestion to convene a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump last year.

According to court filings unsealed this week, Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos suggested at a March 2016 meeting that he could use his connections to set up a meeting between Putin and Trump with the then-GOP candidate's national security team. An Instagram picture on Trump's account shows Sessions attended the meeting at which Papadopoulos made the suggestion."

Likely the date of the meeting along with Testimony from Papasmurf and any other meeting notes, most likely obtained from documents submitted to Mueller by the White House. Plus the fact that Trump himself tweeted it.

Technically, this qualifies as a Russia-Trump connection:

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/11/hackers-compromised-the-trump-organization-4-years-ago-and-the-company-never-noticed/

From the end of the article:

Quote :
"In response to request for comment, the Trump Organization sent this statement:

'There has been no 'hack' within the Trump Organization and the domain names [in question] do not host active websites and do not have any content. Publishing anything to the contrary would be highly irresponsible. Moreover, we have no association with the 'shadow domains' you reference... and are looking into your inquiry with our third party domain registrar. There is no malware detected on any of these domains and our security team takes any and all threats very seriously.'

The security expert who first shared the list of subdomains with Mother Jones notes that it is true that shadow subdomains 'do not currently host active websites and that there is no reason to believe that there is currently any malware active on these domains.' But, he remarks, the Trump Organization’s registrar account 'was likely compromised since someone created these hundreds of records and if it wasn’t an authorized Trump Org person, that only leaves unauthorized persons.'

Shown the Trump Organization’s statement, Lord replied,

'There's two possible situations as I see it. Either they set up their own domain records to point at servers hosted in St. Petersburg, Russia... or someone else did. In either case, the question is why. For an organization on the cusp of a number of investigations about suspicious links to Russia, I'd hoped they would've given more public thought to the possibility that their domain ownership was at some point hijacked possibly through no fault of their own before denying everything.'

The Trump Organization did not respond to follow-up questions.

The security expert who first alerted Mother Jones to the Trump-related shadow subdomains noted that as soon as the Trump Organization responded for this story, records related to the subdomains began disappearing."

I wonder if this relates to the server the FBI was monitoring that was communicating with Russian entities.

Quote :
"Former Trump foreign policy adviser Carter Page privately testified Thursday that he mentioned to Jeff Sessions he was traveling to Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign — as new questions emerge about the attorney general's comments to Congress about Russia and the Trump campaign.

During more than six hours of closed-door testimony, Page said that he informed Sessions about his coming July 2016 trip to Russia, which Page told CNN was unconnected to his campaign role. Page described the conversation to CNN after he finished talking to the House intelligence committee.
Sessions' discussion with Page will fuel further scrutiny about what the attorney general knew about connections between the Trump campaign and Russia — and communications about Russia that he did not disclose despite a persistent line of questioning in three separate hearings this year."

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/03/us/politics/trump-campaign-page-russian.html?_r=0

I'm not sure what amazes me more - the lying in general or the fact that all this lying is occurring with easily obtainable evidence out floating around about it.

Quote :
"WASHINGTON — Carter Page, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump presidential campaign, met Russian government officials during a July 2016 trip he took to Moscow, according to testimony he gave on Thursday to the House Intelligence Committee.

Shortly after the trip, Mr. Page sent an email to at least one Trump campaign aide describing insights he had after conversations with government officials, legislators and business executives during his time in Moscow, according to one person familiar with the contents of the message. The email was read aloud during the closed-door testimony.

The new details of the trip present a different picture than the account Mr. Page has given during numerous appearances in the news media in recent months and are yet another example of a Trump adviser meeting with Russians officials during the 2016 campaign. In multiple interviews with The New York Times, he had either denied meeting with any Russian government officials during the July 2016 visit or sidestepped the question, saying he met with “mostly scholars.”

Mr. Page confirmed the meetings in an interview on Friday evening, but played down their significance."

Yet another aspect of the dossier confirmed.

Quote :
"Speaking in confidence to a compatriot in late July 2016, Source E, an ethnic Russian close associate of Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump, admitted that there was a well-developed conspiracy of co-operation between them and the Russian leadership. This was managed on the TRUMP side by the Republican candidate’s campaign manager, Paul MANAFORT, who was using foreign policy advisor, Carter PAGE, and others as intermediaries. The two sides had a mutual interest in defeating Democratic presidential candidate Hillary CLINTON, whom President PUTIN apparently both hated and feared."

Quote :
"Speaking in July 2016, a Russian source close to Rosneft President, PUTIN close associate and US-sanctioned individual, Igor SECHIN, confided the details of a recent secret meeting between him and visiting Foreign Affairs Advisor to Republican presidential candidate Donald TRUMP, Carter PAGE.
According to SECHIN’s associate, the Rosneft President (CEO) had raised with PAGE the issues of future bilateral energy cooperation and prospects for an associated move to lift Ukraine-related western sanctions against Russia. PAGE had reacted positively to this demarche by SECHIN but had been generally non-committal in response.
Speaking separately, also in July 2016, an official close to Presidential Administration Head, IVANOV, confided in a compatriot that a senior colleague in the Internal Political Department of the PA, DIVYEKIN (nfd) also had met secretly with PAGE on his recent visit. Their agenda had included DIVEYKIN raising a dossier of ‘kompromat’ the Kremlin possessed on Democratic presidential rival, Hillary CLINTON, and its possible release to the Republican’s campaign team."

Quote :
"Speaking to a trusted compatriot in mid October 2015, a close associate of Rosneft President and PUTIN ally Igor SECHIN elaborated on the reported secret meeting between the latter and Carter PAGE, of US Republican presidential candidate’s foreign policy team, in Moscow in July 2016. The secret had been confirmed to him/her by a senior member of staff, in addition to by the Rosneft President himself. It took place on either 7 or 8 July, the same day or the one after Carter PAGE made a public speech to the Higher Economic School in Moscow.
In terms of the substance of their discussion, SECHIN’s associate said that the Rosneft President was so keen to lift personal and corporate western sanctions imposed on the company, that he offered PAGE/TRUMP’s associates the brokerage of up to a 19 per cent (privatised) stake in Rosneft in return. PAGE had expressed interest and confirmed that were TRUMP elected US president, then sanctions on Russia would be lifted."

Quote :
"SECHIN’s associated opined that although PAGE had not stated it explicitly to SECHIN, he had clearly implied that in terms of his comment on TRUMP’s intention to lift Russian sanctions if elected president, he was speaking with the Republican candidate’s full authority."

Also, I find this to be a pretty pathetic statement.

Quote :
"“The half year I spent on the Trump campaign meant more to me than the five years I spent in the Navy,” he said in an interview earlier this year."

Side note, I think this link actually takes the dossier and then hotlinks to stories on the confirmed aspects. Pretty helpful.

Flynn and probably his son, which is next-level leverage.

I'm still reading this but here are very brief cliff notes: https://www.politico.com/story/2017/11/06/carter-page-russia-testimony-244628

And the most bizarre (and yet not unique to this entire ordeal) exchange:

Quote :
"Fifth Amendment rights: Under questioning from the committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, Page acknowledged that he had invoked his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination to avoid turning over relevant documents to the committee. But Page, without a lawyer, repeatedly indicated he had no incriminating documents in his possession, prompting Schiff to question why his Fifth Amendment rights would be relevant. Page, at various moments, offered to turn over certain emails to the committee that he alleged would undermine the contention that collusion with Russia had occurred. But he said he refused to comply with the committee’s subpoena for documents in part because of a distrust in law enforcement that he said was stoked during the 2016 campaign."

Almost seems like they're all working on a "not guilty by reason of mental defect" defense.

Looks like there could be clear evidence of a quid pro quo being the trump admin watering down the gop stance on Ukraine .

This would be enough for obstruction of justice against I bet.

I am 70 pages into the actual testimony. This guy is all over the place. My opinion is that this is going to do quite a bit of damage to him at the least, if not others in the crosshairs of the investigation. I cannot believe this guy went in without a lawyer and actually asked for this to be released publicly. Even Trey Gowdy is tearing him apart.
