I've been to Poole's several times. It is good food, but the pricing is ludicrous. Poole's also has rotating entrees, from what i remember, so the whole "5 dishes and no one ever complains" comment is completely the fuck invalid.

Chicken $hack
although I really shouldn't even bother with this..... it's the natural progression of gentrification
area gets bought up by rich people, they open up things that generally drive the cost of living up and up... people get priced out and move away from downtown areas. I just didn't think Raleigh was at the stage of overpricing standard shit for the sake of "location" yet. Apparently, I was wrong. over the course of the next 10-15 years, you'll see a few more places spring up downtown, with the prices getting ever more ludicrous, and then you'll start to see people migrating away again. You raving over overpriced chicken is just part of the cycle, and you're just too fucking dumb to see it

I've been to Poole's many times, and I used to also be the mayor on Foursquare/Yelp (used to be anyhow). In my opinion Poole's is one of a few places in the city to get an honest meal (the other being Capital Club 16) but I'm a tad conflicted about it. They use local ingredients I would feed my kids if I had any. It's also very well prepared consistently, but it's nothing more than that. In San Francisco places like Poole's are a dime a dozen. Everyone there uses high quality local ingredients and is generally adept enough to make a decent meal. Most of the restaurants there are less than the Poole's price point in that category. At Poole's price point you should expect something a little more than just roast chicken and mashed potatoes. Dining out shouldn't be something a decent home cook can pull off at home. Poole's should be the base expectation of dining out, not the pinnacle. There are several restaurants in the area at the same price point, Lantern and Magnolia Grill, that upon dining I have no idea how they do what they do. They usually have multiple clearly labor intensive sauces/veggies in a single dish. All of which are amazing on their own and even more amazing in combination.9/26/2011 8:12:23 AM |

I agree...to a certain extent. I'm lucky I live in a city where there are so many places that pull this off. But I also like to go out because I don't feel like cooking (or the lady doesn't). I don't feel like picking a recipe, going to the grocery store and picking out the few ingredients I don't have, spending the actual time cooking, and then cleaning up afterwards. I'd rather sit down at a nice restaurant, have a nice conversation with my girlfriend without having to keep an eye on the grill/clean shrimp/grate cheese/etc., and drink a nice wine that I can't find retail.
I don't have to be blown away with every dining experience.9/26/2011 8:26:12 AM |

no one got "cunty" (I LOVE when TWWers contrive scenarios out of thin air).. .in fact, we felt bad for sitting, getting our waters, going over and over whether or not we wanted chicken, or a biscuit (or both!), apologizing to our very nice waitress, and leaving.
I can't wrap my head around why you people can't wrap your head around why we wanted more to choose from than chicken, or a biscuit.
This discourse alone on these last two pages clearly indicates to me that this IS, in fact, a jerk-off event for this lady.

I think we were confused as to why you didn't already know that this was pretty much all this place service. With the exception of not being able to get the waffles...that's all this place is...chicken and sides. It's like going to a pizza place, sitting down and ordering waters, and then going, "You know, we thought this place was going to have more than pizza...we're going somewhere else with more options."
And I'm not jerkin the lady off. I've never eaten at one of her establishments. I do, however, love fried chicken. It's probably my most favorite thing to eat in the world. My sister must take me to this place next time I get back to Raleigh.9/26/2011 9:42:27 AM |

And, sure, when you go to a pizza place, it's probably because you want pizza. I cannot tell you how many times people have come to Ruckus in a group, and some wanted pizza, while others wanted chicken wings. We do not have chicken wings, and they often leave. To WillemJoel's defense I don't think I've been anywhere, except maybe ice cream shops, that had only one thing on the menu. Even then ice cream places have lots of flavors and sometimes cookies to choose from.
I like the idea of having focused menus. If a place has 100 choices you know they don't make shit from scratch, instead buying things frozen premade from US Foodservice. I CAN MAKE MICROWAVE FOOD AT HOME MYSELF. WHEN I PAY YOU TO COOK I EXPECT YOU TO ACTUALLY COOK IT. 9/26/2011 9:52:00 AM |

^^^^so you've read up on your Beasley's, then. You do realize the only point you're making, and even attempting to make, is that you know about Beasley's, right? Which kinda makes Nick's point that you kids are fan boys from the get-go. Which is fine, of course, but you can't expect everyone to just arbitrarily get the scoop on every restaurant that opens up downtown. If I had known it was just chicken and honey, I would've said, "hey, you guys want some chicken and honey", instead of saying "hey, let's try Beasley's, I've heard good things". And, out of the 9 of us who went, only Nick and I had heard of the place (6 people were here from out of town). So, living 4 hours away and knowing the ins and outs of something is of no consequence to me.

I'm a Beasley's fanboy because I read a thread on t-dub about it?? I don't know anyone personally that's eaten there nor have I done any research on the place (or their chef) other than read this thread. The only arguing I've done in this thread is to defend restaurants in general by some of the blanket statements that have been made about this place.
It seems that you're upset because you didn't have the general knowledge about this place that would have prevented the situation that you and your friends encountered yesterday. General knowledge that someone who also runs a restaurant in the same town and reads the message board should have acquired in the past month.

I checked it out this weekend and I, too, was generally unimpressed. I knew that it was just chicken and honey but I suspected there may be more than two main options on a the menu. Also, the chicken wasn't that good for the price point. Its the same reason why I don't go to the pit. The food is a southern stable that can be cooked by many, taste better and cost far less. I get it, being trendy is cool but there is a point where an idea just becomes fucking stupid.

No pissing contest. I'm being told by a couple of people that based on some cosmic unknown default, I should not have expected more menu items than chicken and a biscuit. I'm merely using my brain, based on 15 or so years of dining out.
that's all.
And, I'm being berated by folks who think it's perfectly fine for Beasley's to only serve what is touted in the name, while unquantifiable amounts of dining institutions serve well beyond what is mentioned in its name.

The difference here is no one is arguing about quality.
I'm being told I offered a review of a restaurant I didn't even sample. My review was, essentially, "this wasn't what I was expecting. We had a large group to feed, who also didn't know what to expect. It turned out to not be what we wanted at the time. We thought, 'wow, it really is just chicken and honey! That's cute. We'll come back when we want fried chicken and honey'. So, we left, amicably".
Which, to me, means that some of you don't know how to articulate an argument outside of a few key obtuse terms.

Quality is not the only thing to argue about concerning a restaurant. Menu selection is a pretty common topic. Which is what you brought up.
I'm struggling with the fact that for some reason you feel you are beyond reproach for not knowing a common fact that most people that go to this restaurant know (and a lot that don't go).
Quote : | "I'm being told I offered a review of a restaurant I didn't even sample." |
I don't think you offered a review. You just made a critique on their menu offerings, and that because of that menu offering you chose a different spot.
