I've never really thought too much of Shockey since his Miami days, but he's a solid veteran pickup at a position we desperately need some help at.

Chud probably has a whole playbook dedicated to the tight end position.

don't you even mention Walls and Shockey in the same sentence. Walls is a legend in Panther lore.

just saw a new mock draft from rotoworld.com and they have the Panthers taking Cam Newton with the #1 pick. Nick Fairley dropped all the way down to the #8 pick

Newton is a bigger, faster, stronger version of Vince Young. Similar baggage, too. Hopefully he's not a total headcase.

I really wouldnt mind taking newton at this point. Sure we have other needs, but qb is the most important position and clausen, moore, pike, et al are not the answer. Cam will breathe life into the team and give it a leader and identity while putting butts in the seats and giving the new coaching staff someone to rally and build around. you. cant really build a tteam around a cb like you cam a qb, and with all the ?? at the top of the draft it is not too big of a gamble to roll the dice on a guy who is a proven winner on every level.

I will officially jump on the cam bandwagon

Drafting Cam Newton 1st overall will result in at least 5 years of futility for the Panthers

the man barely completed 50% of his passes in one workout...with no pads, clear throwing lanes and noboby trying to take his head off. He's got a strong arm, but that's useless if he's not accurate.

Knowing the Panthers and Jerry Richardson, we will probably just pick up some DL or something.

you guys putting too much stock into combine & pro days

granted, when the guy only has 1 season of games under his belt, you have to weigh those 2 events a little more heavily, but not to the point where they're the focal point of why you would or wouldn't draft him

40 times, 225 reps and all that has little to no real meaning imo...but when you can't complete passes under 0 pressure, that's an issue...especially when the routes/throws are scripted

as an example, last years #1 completed something like 61 of 62 passes on his pro day.

^Cam completed 50/60 on his pro day

The point is players (especially QBs) should be judged on their collegiate body of work and intangibles (mostly work ethic, willingness to improve & learn the massive playbooks & intricacies of the game) not on how how they performed in a mid-march practice or how they did on a presidential fitness test

Nobody should place as much weight on a few dozen passes in a practice as they do on the player's collegiate career, even if that "career" is only 1 year in D1

For the record, I'm not a big fan of Newton as an NFL QB, but to make that choice based on a practice or 2 seems to be either lazy or stupid (or both). I think Newton is used to being the most athletic guy on the field and expects to be able to ride that natural ability into the NFL, which he won't. If he's not willing to put in the work in the film room and knowing playbooks like the back of his hand, then he'll be another 1st round QB bust. Not because he overthrew a few slow D III WRs at the combine or had half his incompletions at his pro day dropped by his WRs

I can't see Panthers taking Newton number one. Though, he may put fans in the seat, I don't seem him being a prolific team leading qb. But that is just my and several others opinions. I have not seen enough game film (1 season is not enough for me) to show me that he is ready and able to lead an NFL team.

Maybe he is a project and will show me up...but damn, it is a sad draft when we are ready to anoint a player of his caliber as number 1.

who would you rank above him? Nick Fairley was the clear cut #1 pick for a few weeks, then he dropped. Patrick Peterson is up there now, but do you really want to get a DB as the #1 pick when we have so many other glaring weaknesses?

What a shitty draft to have the #1 pick

Never understood the fear of taking a corner #1. Other that quarterback, they can have the single biggest impact on the game. Champ Bailey and Darrell Revis are much better than the number 1 picks in their drafts. If people think Peterson is at that level, then you have to take him.

Point is, if a quarterback taken #1 busts, you're left with nothing. If you take a corner #1 and he doesn't live up to his draft position, odds are he's still going to be at least a serviceable player.

And I think Peterson will be a top corner for the next decade.

Peterson wouldn't be a bad option at all.

He's a ridiculous athlete, great corner, and sick return guy. To me that sounds a lot like the 2011 version of Deion to me.

Maybe not the best PR move, though.

speaking of Revis, it was the Panthers who traded their 2007 1st rounder to the Jets so that they could draft him

I've been a devoted Panthers fan since moving to NC in 1998. I live, breathe, eat, and drink the Panthers. And I'd like to think I'm a pretty reasonable guy.

But if they draft "Scam Newton" -- I'm done. You won't find me at a game, sports bar, watching on Fox, or sporting a Panthers jersey until they release him.

This is Carolina. Not New York, not Chicago, not Dallas. This is a community where character counts. It's a community whose first love is NCAA basketball -- and who is well represented first and foremost by Davidson College, but also by UNC and Duke. This community will not accept an NCAA-cheat, with the smug, arrogant defiance Scam displayed during his press conference in late 2010.

We can do better.

I wouldnt mind taking Peterson in this draft because I do think he will be a top lockdown corner for years, but with all the other weaknesses we have and the fact that we have a new coaching staff looking for an identity, it makes sense for us to take Cam

I'm glad some people are agreeing with my peterson campaigning, if some smug talking head makes a big deal about taking a corner number one than you just say that you took the most can't miss player in the draft and then bring up all the busts there have been in the past at more popular positions, that should shut about 75% of them up

I feel everyone's pain on the qb issue but it's just not a draft that's going to help us at that position most likely, where were these people acting like tebow should be number one? they are kind of the same player aren't they? and prob jemarcus was better respected in the pocket at this point in their careers too

I never thought Tebow would/could be an NFL QB and I still don't

I think Newton can definitely be a good NFL QB, but it might take some time

And when Bailey went 7th overall in 1999, Tim Couch was the 1st overall pick...however the 2nd guy to get drafted was some guy named Donovan McNabb...he turned out pretty well

I have always disliked tebow. The similarities between tebow and newton stop at them both being mobile qbs. I think newton is more similar to jamarcus except he has the mental capacity and leadership abilities that russell lacked

I'd say Tebow is more similar to Russell than Newton is to Russell, other than them both being black.

But let's get one thing straight, none of them will ever be an elite NFL qb because none of them are very accurate passers. It's pretty rare for QB's to make great strides in accuracy from their college years to their pro careers. Drafting a QB with ~60% completion rate #1 overall is just a bad decision.

i'm not suggesting building the team around peterson. what i'm saying is that unlike the qb's available in this draft, he's pretty much a guaranteed sure thing. as someone else said, even if he's not a pro-bowl caliber player, he'll still be a starter, or at worst a lethal punt returner. there's just not a surefire qb pick in this draft (at least #1 worthy), whereas next year there will be one. maybe it's too risky trying to get the #1 next year, but if any of the talking heads are worth their salt, andrew luck is the next peyton manning.

well I'd argue mcnabb was a much more polished passer when he was drafted, I didn't watch a lot of his games at the time but his stats at cuse look pretty similar to what they were in the nfl, he obviously used his athleticism too but he never rushed for more than 500 yards a season and I'm sure he was in a more realistic system than that gimmick newton was in last yr
