Since he still had 6 years left on his contract, maybe he wasn't willing to negotiate a buyout.

Either way, keeping a coach happy who has us in position to be preseason conference favorites for the first time in 20+ years is a good call. Adding a couple million to a buyout clause wouldn't deter UCLA and wouldn't leave us in a much better position even if he left.

I'm not sure we really want a huge buyout for Gottfried anyway. It looks like sunshine and rainbows right now for the future of the program, but 3 years from now could look very different. Maybe staff turnover and the daily grind of coaching a high major program catches up to him after a couple years, I certainly hope that doesn't happen but you have to look at that as a realistic possibility, especially given how his tenure ended at Alabama.

13-1 and have beaten UNC, Duke, and Wake in the same season for the first time in school history. I'm pretty sure we had a 40+ conference game losing when I was in school. 3-0 so far this season.
