Is that new construction? Streetview pics show empty lots.

yeah. I am not sure exactly how new but they are still filling it out right now so the timing worked out perfectly for me. My assignment here is 6-7 months at the moment. I doubt it will be shorter but it could be longer. Worst/longest case for me is 2 years - there are two projects right now. The first one I am on is this the initial stint and then we are bidding on another job and if we win they want me to stay out here for up to another 18 months on that... (but I think I would try to work something out where I am back and forth and not full time up here if that was the case).

The money when you go work out of town for this kind of thing is outstanding, but it comes at the expense of living at home with my wife. Some people don't care about that and are glad to get away from their wives but I actually do miss being at home with my wife and dog everyday a good bit. /lifeblog

So far, so good though in Greensboro. I've done nothing but walked between my apartment and the downtown bar/restaurant area this entire weekend and I'm still in one piece. I feel reasonably safe doing it, but it does get pretty quiet on the last stretch up Eugene to Smith where I'm usually the only one there at 2am. I'll be home the next two weekends but once I'm back, if anyone wants to grab a beer or something sometime, let me know.

So Deep Roots is perfect for me. Tonight was the first time I've gotten to go since it opened because I was in Raleigh presenting at State Wed/Thursday and then back home this weekend.

Glad they have the small hot bar and that it is a reasonable price. Overall it's the perfect size for a downtown grocer, I like what they offer, and I have a feeling I'll be there frequently considering it's literally across the street from my apartments.

----

On a different topic...where are the "chill" bars or dive bars around Greensboro. Natty Greenes isn't bad and there are times I'm up for a louder bar like some of the others I've tried around time, but on the regular I tend to prefer the smaller, quieter bars or the moodier Belgian bars etc. especially i I will be going out by myself some here. IOW, high quality brews with a conversational atmosphere. I have several back home that I love but I haven't really found that yet here so I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of one downtown.

I've heard decent things about the Flat Iron. To be honest though I've got no idea about downtown bars anymore. Last time I went drinking downtown we were thrown out of a bar (Natty Greene's). Here's the DGI website, that might help

^^ Thanks I'll look into Flat Iron. Appreciate the website too.

I'd be interested in checking out stuff outside of direct downtown as well; that's just always my first preference since I could walk there instead of drive.

^^ Thanks. I've been to Natty Greens and Greys so far. I'll look into the others. From reading online it seems like M'Coul's has a good brunch so that may be a good time to go there.

^ Awesome, thank you. Definitely sounds like a place I should be checking out. I will most likely go there one day this weekend.

http://www.news-record.com/home/1018097-63/update-greensboro-mayor-declares-bankruptcy

for those of you in the city, Mayor Perkins filed for divorce before his election and was ordered to pay alimony and child support to his wife and kids. They've gone back and forth in court several times and last year Mayor Perkins quit his job on the board of directors for Newbridge in hopes of getting his monthly amount lowered. Judge more or less laughed him out of court over that.

The Mayor made roughly 500k last year. He is currently dating a bankruptcy attorney and has yet to give up his membership at the country club. Mayor Perkins is primarily a realtor and this year has sold 3 million in property. He also owns quite a bit of property around the city, but has only defaulted on the house his wife and kids live in which he is required to pay the mortgage for.

It's amusing. If you get a chance to catch channel 13 when they have the replay of the council meetings do so. There's two or three people that come to every meeting and talk at the beginning. It's like watching a train wreck sometimes. There's one guy that was a former police officer that wears sunglasses to the meetings and the other one is a white guy that keeps calling the Mayor out and asking him to resign. Still not as good as the guy that used to hang the county commissioners in effigy and was banned from attending meetings for a while because the threatened to blow them up and brought a box with wires in to demonstrate how easy it would be..lol

Also, I went to Hibachi Cafe Friday night. Very good for the price, especially since you get 8 pieces per roll for most of them. I will definitely be a regular there on the weekends I am in town. Thanks again!

http://www.news-record.com/news/elections/1030275-63/records-perkins-in-debt-108m

Quote :
"Perkins owes $195,000 in state and federal income taxes, according to the court documents. He was ordered to pay his wife about $13,000 a month in child and spousal support, although Perkins is appealing that decision.

Also among his debts:

l $9,000 to his divorce attorney.

l $32,000 to Greensboro Day School, where his teenage daughter attends.

l $75,000 to his business partner.

l $15,695 to the law firm Brooks Pierce.

l $23,000 for a line of credit with BB&T.

l $47,169 to American National Bank. The bank sued Perkins in March for defaulting on this 2011 loan. Court documents say the purpose of the loan was to “refinance existing debt to pay taxes.”

l About $644,000 in mortgages from NewBridge Bank on his Irving Park home and a lot next door. Perkins was a member of the bank’s board of directors until he resigned last fall.

In Chapter 7 bankruptcy, a court-appointed trustee gathers and sells some of the debtor’s assets. The proceeds go to the debtor’s creditors.

Some debtor’s assets, like $5,000 worth of household goods, are exempt from the bankruptcy process and will not be sold by the trustee, said Rayford “Trip” Adams, who teaches bankruptcy law at Elon.

If the debtor succeeds, the court will “discharge” his debts, or eliminate his responsibility for repaying the money owed.

Some debts — such as alimony or taxes — cannot be discharged through bankruptcy, Adams said.

Perkins has $1.4 million in personal property and real estate, according to the bankruptcy documents. He claimed $10.8 million in debts, about $8.7 million of which is unsecured. Many of his creditors are banks. It was unclear from court records what the debt was for, although much of it was listed as “business obligations.”"

We started off so good as a city. We're the site of one of the turning points in the Revolutionary War. We even voted against secession. We're the birthplace of Vicks and Cone Industries. We've had folks like William Sydney Porter and Tal Farlow born here. We had an important moment in the sit-in movement start here.

Now we're known for the Communist Worker's Party challenging the Klan to a fight and acting surprised when the Klan showed up and were better shots than the members of the CWP. We were voted the least sexiest city. An now our Mayor, who wanted to spend 40 or so million public dollars to build a downtown art theatre, is himself 10.8 million in debt.

Yeah I believe you're right, but there was definitely some game being played last week. Maybe a HS or college team was using the field? I know back home Furman and Clemson both play some games downtown at our nice minor league stadium.

I think my apartment complex actually has 1 ticket available for everyone in the complex or something. I need to check into that if my other plans don't pan out.

When I was in High School we played our All-Star game at War Memorial, where the Hornets/Bats (now Grasshoppers) used to play. I'm sure when there aren't home games they will rent the field out to anyone willing to pay for it.

Funny story. I read the schedule wrong one year and me and a buddy went to the stadium expecting it to be Thirsty Thursday. We get there and there was no line at the box office, which was strange. Come to find out it was a High School Cheerleading competition. We probably would have stayed anyway if they were serving beer.

Quote :
"Greensboro, NC-- Three students under the age of 16 at Grimsley High School are facing charges related to prostitution, according to Greensboro Police.

Susan Danielsen, a spokesperson for the Greensboro Police Department said the investigations started on May 1 and charges were made the same day. Because all the involved suspects involved are juveniles, Danielsen said the department is limited on what information it can release to the media.

After their investigation, police charged one student with Prostitution, one student was charged with Solicitation and a third student was charged with Aiding & Abetting Prostitution.

The alleged incident happened on campus at Grimsley High School, Danielsen said. She said the incident appears to isolated to this one and Officers don't believe anyone else was involved."

http://myfox8.com/2013/07/01/push-for-teen-curfew-after-massive-fight-breaks-out-in-downtown-greensboro/

Quote :
"GREENSBORO, N.C. — A massive fight in downtown Greensboro Saturday night has some city leaders taking a hard look at bringing back the teen curfew.
Nearly 400 people were involved in the several fights that happened along Elm Street.
Greensboro police arrested 11 people ranging in age from 16 to 20-years-old. Officers had to use pepper spray and a stun gun to try to get the crowd under control. Greensboro Police Department had to call UNCG Police and Guilford County for extra help.
Some officers minor injuries following the fights. As soon as one fight stopped another started.
The security cameras outside of Syn and Sky nightclub caught many of the brawls. The footage shows two groups of teens walking toward each other on Elm Street and several people running away into the streets.
Mike Carter is the owner of Syn and Sky and thinks it’s about time to reenact the 11 p.m. curfew that was enforced in 2011.
“It makes no sense for teenagers to be out roaming around on a Friday or Saturday night, or any night for that matter,” Carter said.
Several teens said they understand the reasoning behind the curfew, but they’re still upset they have to deal with the consequences even when they’ve been following the rules.
“First of all just stop for all you juvenile delinquents. Just stop. Really, it’s not really worth it. You’re ruining it for us,” said Christopher Hicks, a high school junior.
Greensboro police and city leaders are discussing extra patrols for the holiday weekend."

So this happened Saturday and didn't get reported till today.

I just avoid that whole stretch of Elm after probably 10pm. I had multiple people (adults and teens) seeming like they are just tempting you to do something to start a fight when I was walking back through there when I first got up here for work. It's not worth dealing with that.
