With our poor out of conference schedule and the talent we have this year, a few games better than last year is fireable IMO. Who knows what Debbie will do, though. I thought DD would have been on the hotseat--particularly with how many good candidates were available.

Question on the board form last page: what do y'all think would legitimately have to happen for Yow to fire Gott this season?

Quote :
"better than last season in what sense? like...strictly in terms of record? if we miss the postseason again this year (including NIT) but our record is a couple games better, is that really "better" than last year?"

I don't think it's better but I think Debbie would use it as justification along with the S16 runs. Barring some sort of miracle I think he should lose his job for squandering this talent and a chance to turn the corner with the program. I just don't think Debbie will do it unless she's completely forced to or she retires early herself.

I think as long as he does better than last season he'll be around for another year."

Whatever this is, I hope it happens given that we have an astronomically small chance of playing for anything worthwhile this year

IMO, missing the tourney with this roster combined with the shitty year last year would be enough justification to fire him. that said, i'm not really convinced that that actually will get him fired. i think he'll be back next year.

that bad thing about this year is that even though we are young, we still aren't really built for next year to be a big year either. DSJ is going pro, we lose Anya, potentially lose Henderson if he's not granted a 6th year, Abu could very well go pro since he tested the waters last year...we also seem to lose at least one transfer. in other words, we may have a bit of a patchwork roster next year too. which isn't encouraging for 2017-18 being a year we make a big jump

We definitely were built to compete for a conference championship this year. But the good thing about basketball is that rebuilding a program is much quicker, if you have the right people in place ( a good coach, a good recruiter, good position coaches). Fortunately, we have one of the best recruiting assistant coaches in the country.

i'm not saying he's particularly good. he's not. but it's that much frontcourt depth we lose. plus the real possibility of losing Abu. and that's assuming Yurtseven comes back - he had fallen to 2nd round in the last mock i saw. so that seems like a safe assumption now.

while losing anya by itself isn't terrible at all, losing 2 guys from the frontcourt (if we do) is definitely gonna make a difference in terms of depth next year. luckily we will have Freeman available next year and hopefully Hicks will be able to contribute. if Freeman is 100% and Hicks is able to contribute, we won't really take a hit on depth. but if Hicks were to transfer or just suck then lack of depth can quickly become an issue.

yeah, it's a much quicker and easier to rebuild or reload in basketball. looking like this recruiting cycle may be similar to last years (and most years under Gott). scrambling down the stretch...but their recruiting ability doesn't worry me...they'll get that sorted out. i'm more worried about their coaching ability.

Call Archie. Offer whatever he wants. Don't let him go to Indiana.

If he says no give less money to Keatts. Gott can coach at UNCW. He can look at the co-eds on Carolina Beach.

I mean Archie would come (most likely) and he is good. It seems like a no brainer.

You know, if Gott takes the UCLA job..

I didn't get to see the post game Gott interview. But I imagine Gott will strangle Giglio if defense is brought up again.

We've been to the tourney more than 6 times in 21 years. 9 times between Herb and Gott.

Pretty good start. Obviously Archie needs to be option A. Marshall isn't coming and Hurley/Crean would not be popular.

Moton can absolutely coach, not sure how well he could recruit but NCSU seems to recruit itself for bball.

Musselman has NBA ties, but is already 52 and would only be here for a short stay it seems.

Just checked Thad Matta at Ohio State is on track to miss the NCAAs 2 seasons in a row. If tOSU decides to let him go and grab Archie... should we just go for him? Dud'e only 49, been to 2 Final Fours, .700 winning percentage?

I'd take Keatts, Archie, Marshall of course (can't imagine he would leave or be available), and McDermott.

Not interested in a major school retread like Martin or Crean or below average NBA coach (been there). The rest may end up being good, but are probably too early to consider IMO.

Honestly, I'd be happy with Matta, but if we can't get the jump on tOSU and grab Archie first, I'd be pretty damn disappointed with our athletic dept.

Marshall makes $3 million a year at Wichita and has already been a candidate here. Plus he made a FF4 there so he can win big. He probably stays put unless Kansas or someone calls.

Yeah Crean is a joke. Keatts would be 10x the hire Cream would be. Matta would be an absolute steal if tOSU fires him. Hoiberg would be gold too if we could land him. My dream is that OKC chokes post all star game and Donovan gets canned. Ain't happening, but holy shit if it did.

Crean and matta both suck. They always look lost without answers when their teams are down. So no.

They've had amazing rosters that carried them to a couple good seasons

^^^ In what world are you living where Matta sucks? He has 2 final fours including making it to the championship game, not to mention other deep runs in the tourney, a career .700 winning percentage and 8 conference titles....

I doubt Matta would be available, but if he is we damn sure better take him.

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton guided the Seminoles to the Sweet 16 in 2011 and to an ACC Tournament title complete with a No. 3 seed in 2012. He then missed the Big Dance the next FOUR seasons. Lots of Florida State fans wanted “Ham” on a platter with a side of au gratin potatoes.

Hamilton now has Florida State atop the ACC, certain to get a solid NCAA Tournament seed at a school which hangs its hat on football. Hamilton deserved a chance to repair what had once been a humming machine. He got it, and the Noles are reaping the rewards of their patience."

If Gott won an ACC tournament, he would have earned enough #Credibility to have that 4-5 season buffer.

Also, btw, with the new double bye setup, you basically HAVE to be top 4 to win. Those byes are a HUGE advantage, especially over the 10-15 crew. Since the ACC expanded past 9, no team outside top 4 has won and only 3 teams outside have even made the finals.

FTFY. Seriously people, we haven't won a championship in like 30 years. I would go on double NCAA suspension for a championship at this point.
