Really wish they would switch the ACC tourney so it was a traditional 16 team bracket. Give #1 a bye and set it up so all the first round games are played on the home court of the higher seed on the Tuesday/Wednesday. Then play out the quarter finals/semi/finals at a central location on Friday/Saturday/Sunday.

i'm with you until you basically say half the teams don't even get to go to the tournament. that's a terrible idea.

^ why who cares. Don't want to deprive the last place team in the ACC a chance to travel to a neutral court to lose on a Tuesday? That setup actually rewards finishing in the top half of the conference with a first round home game, better for the fans and then you don't have this current setup which is pretty dumb to make kids potentially play 5 games in 5 days or whatever it is. That isn't even safe to some degree.

it's not better for the fans. there are many, many fans who go to the acc tournament to see as many games as they can, not just the games involving their own team. this basically gets rid of half the fanbase.

^Seriously?

How many people go to the ACC tournament to watch all 5 days worth of games? I bet most show up just for that weekend when it actually gets good. Whenever the top teams lose the place empties out, and those first round games hardly have a large crowd. Those games aren't nearly sold out, compared to first round home ACCT games where you'd probably get a great turnout for that bonus home game. Small percent of die hards go and watch all those games and not just the team they want to see(assuming they have a realistic chance to actually win).

And who is traveling during the week to watch their 12th or 13th seeded team play in the tournament?

People who consider this a trip to NYC primarily, with some basketball to watch too.

I'm not endorsing his idea, but this is a really dumb post. You're implying the tourney location would get more fans than 7 home locations.

^^ I'd say a small percent of people plan their vacations around the opening rounds of the ACCT. Not that there aren't some. I think most of those first days are just locals seeing some basketball. You'll get more people making the weekend trip once they find out their team made it that far than you would get people sticking around all week.

I'm trying to plan an event at work to watch the game. Will we likely get the noon game on the 7th based on our shitty seeding? And if we win, would we then play the 8th or the 9th?

^^^no I'm saying that half the fan bases won't be attending the tournament at all. Not attendance at individual games. I enjoy tournaments (ACC, NCAA) because you get to sit in your seat and watch a bunch of good basketball games in person. Even if your team isn't playing it's still fun. Having first round games the higher ranked home court ruins that for plenty of people, not to mention being extremely advantageous to the home team.

First of all, so what? Second, take a look at the stands for a final, vast majority of attendees are fans to 2 remaining teams.

Dude those first round ACCT games nobody is there.

Are you comparing a Thursday at the NCAAT to a Weds at the ACCT? Are you watching us play who the hell wants to pay money to see this dumpster fire? And why is it bad to get a nice advantage for finishing top 8? Getting a bye is probably equivalent and some get 2.

This is looking more and more like reality folks.

You know, there are a lot of parallels with this thread and Donald Trump's Presidential campaign.
It was started to just have a bit of fun. Have a couple laughs. Sell a couple books.
I never thought it would actually come to fruition, and in someways, it is a bit unnerving that it actually happened.

But here we are.

I feel an immense responsibility to get this coaching search right. From here on out, only serious discussion of possible candidates is allowed. Let's try to not have the same messy coaching search we always have. Let's be dignified. Let's be united. Let's not talk about Sean Miller, or Bill Cowher, or the reanimated corpse of Everett Case. Let's get real, so when we finally pick our next coach, we will be cocksure about our man on the sideline.
I look forward to discussing Wolppack basketball's future with you all.

May God have mercy on our souls.

From the little bit of PackInsider I read:

-Archie isn't out of the question, but he's not a lock like some assume. He apparently isn't as fond of NC State fans as we are of him (lately). High expectations, ACC pressure, crazy/demanding fanbase all being reasons. Supposedly he only committed here because Sean Miller was on the coaching staff, so it's not like he's all nostalgic for NC State or anything like Lowe

-Of note, the same guy who said that^ also said Chris Mack (Xavier coach) and Fred Hoiberg have been contacted and are interested. Hoiberg supposedly wants back in college bball, and since the Bulls are a trainwreck, he's already looking around for opportunities.

Could be complete shit. But it's shit worth noting at least.

You and every other NC State fan.

And while I'm on the PackInsider binge, I'll go ahead and post this little nugget I saw on there regarding the supposed high price of a buyout. No clue if it holds water, but it's heartening at least:

Quote :
""...All you people talking about how expensive the buyout would be really know little it seems. Base salary($760k) times 3 years left is $2.28 million. Cheap. He would not be owed his supplemental salary, which is ~$1.8 million/yr. Stop talking about how expensive it would be, cause it won't be. Also, I read where if he is on the team either March 1st or 31st, he would be owed ~$400k. Get him gone before that and save that money. $2.3 million is a lot to us, but not to the athletic program. Especially since it would be paid over 3 years. Or, he could take a settlement and get maybe ~$1.5 million in a lump sum. Things can be down to lower the buyout...."

I would die for Hoiberg, no doubt, but the chance of that rumor being real is slim.

But the chance that archie really isn't interested in entering this "den of wolves", so to speak, seems like it could be based in reality.

Why exactly are you guys all gung-ho about hoiberg? He had moderate success at Iowa State, but never made it past the sweet 16. And not that he would be the first college coach (even good ones) to struggle in the NBA, but he hasn't been great there either.

I wouldn't hate if he was the hire, but he is down on the list IMO. Plus we would have to wait until the end of the NBA season and we would be basically out of the running on anyone else at that point.

I don't think he has any inside info. He is just saying we won't get Archie because NCState shit. Nothing good ever happens here.

^wikipedia says he won his conference tournament championship twice. He also made the sweet 16 twice with Iowa. State. Imagine a place where he could bring in top 10 recruiting classes.

Also people who bitch about conference pressure and unruly fan bases are giant bitches. People have been calling for Roy to retire every time he loses a game, it's not like there isn't a lunatic fringe at every school. I think our fanbase would be plenty happy with splitting some games with UNC/Duke and finishing top 6 ish in the conference.

It's certainly not unrealistic to demand that we be out of the cellar on a regular basis. I'm tired of making the tournament by the skin of our freakin teeth.

I'd say that's pretty impressive. You might be able to argue that he did it with McDermott's recruits but then you could say the same thing about Prohm. Either way, the Cyclones went to a T30 program in a very tough conference and not much history of greatness. Hoiberg could wreck shop with the recruiting power he'd have in Raleigh.

Like I said, I wouldn't hate the hire and I'm not trying to crap on the guy, there are just others who I would be much more excited about. It's not like we are talking about grabbing a Pitino or Calipari from a bad NBA stint. Short of that, I'd rather get a relative unknown than someone who has a track record of being above average. I mean, let's give ourselves a high ceiling at least.

Also, those defensive rankings are not what I am looking for at this juncture.

You can dismiss me, or you could explain why everyone seems to have a hardon for this guy who has never had any real success in the tournament at a P5 school (over a decent time period) and has been below average in the NBA.

I understand the argument that he could potentially recruit better here, but other than that (which is not a definite) what makes you think he could even repeat his moderate success at Iowa State when in the current ACC (a much tougher conference)? Where is this high ceiling? Not to mention his defenses have been ranked in the 100s.

Most of the mid-major coaches on the list posted a few pages back (although who actually knows who will be avaialble) have made a deep run in the NCAA tournament and many of them have dominated their mid-major conference. I'd say those coaches have a much higher ceiling when they have made runs in the NCAA without P5 caliber players.

The list of P5 coaches who have had some success and then moved to another p5 job and had more success is a short one. The list of mid-major coaches with success and then moved onto a p5 job and had more success is much longer. Don't laugh though, enlighten me.

he's "below average" in the NBA because of a crap front office that doesn't give him the players needed for his system and they have a huge hard on for Iowa State guys in general

He will have better recruits here and that is almost a certainty. Raleigh >> Ames, IA (had to look that up). His success wasn't moderate - he won two Big12 tournaments among many other things. The Big12 is ranked higher than the ACC right now according to Kenpom (19.33 over 17.21). His average defense over five years was 82 but that also included triple digit figures the year he inherited the program and presumably the year after many upperclass departures. He generally kept a defense in the high 50s.

Quote :
"improved to 23–11, had 12 wins in the conference, and earned a #8 seed in the South Regional in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, earning Hoiberg Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year honors. The Cyclones defeated the #9 seed and defending national champion Connecticut Huskies before falling to overall #1 seed and eventual champion Kentucky.

In Hoiberg's third season, the Cyclones earned a #10 seed and defeated #7 Notre Dame in the Round of 32. It was the first year the Cyclones had been to the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years since 2000–2001, and the first time the Cyclones had won Tournament games in successive seasons since 1996–1997.

The Cyclones earned a #3 seed in the East Regional of the 2014 NCAA Tournament and defeated their first opponent, North Carolina Central, 93–75. Another close call came next in the third-round game against North Carolina, with ISU prevailing, 85–83. The Cyclones advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2000, and lost to #7 seed Connecticut, 81–76 (the differential representing the Huskies' narrowest margin of victory during the tournament), the eventual national champion.

This marked the third time in their last four trips to the NCAA Tournament that the Cyclones lost to the eventual national champions (2005 North Carolina, 2012 Kentucky, and 2014 Connecticut.)"
