So let me get this straight. If my employer takes a political position that I disagree with, it's ok for me to just straight up stop working in protest, and expect to keep my job?

It's an action (returning the statue), not a political position.

And what if a large portion of you co-workers protested with you? Would your employer fire and replace them all at the same time? Might hurt their bottom line.

UNC should tear down every building erected before they allowed black students in 1951

Did Rosa Parks refuse to do her job in protest?

These professors have every right to protest. They just don't have the right to keep their job.

If the professors had refused to work in protest of UNC’s AFAM shenanigans (they should have) you two would be cheering as hard as anybody.

Everyone is aware that they could lose their jobs. The fact that you’re so focused on this rather than the racist statue reveals your beliefs.

There were reactionaries back in the 50s, just like you guys, who thought it was good Rosa Parks was arrested.

I really couldn't care what happens to this dumb statue at this point.

Send it to the state museum of history for a display on racism for all I care.

That's sort of the correct viewpoint to have, but your GOP legislators in the NC GA passed a law telling individual organizations what they can do with their statues.

If not for the statue law, UNC could have take the thing down a long time ago.

Aren't some students (potentially) not able to graduate and therefore losing out on jobs of their own? Maybe some of the employers who hired them in advance, pending graduation, will hire them anyway based on the extenuating circumstances. But some of the students who can't graduate will have their employment adversely affected. Which jobs are more valuable, the existing jobs of the professors or the future jobs of the students?

What about the higher percentage of students who don't already have a job lined up? I'm just wondering why the professor's jobs are the only ones that matter to you.

Everyone here is obviously pro-noSilentSam, so how would you feel if you had a pro-silent sam professor withhold your grades in protest? I seriously doubt you would appreciate that professors right to protest through taking the form of withhold the fruits of your semester's worth of hard labor.

^^I'm not calling for professors to be fired, but you're ignoring the fact that not being able to receive grades and graduate could actually impact some young people's employment. I guess you're more for the old white professors than the up and coming generation.

Morals don't matter here. As a student, you paid for a service. These professors are not providing an integral part of this service, regardless of how morally superior they feel.

morals always matter. be on the side who is against celebrating racist statues. it isn’t that difficult.

the protests and threats worked, so I’m not sure what you’re whining about, other than being against peaceful protests

the BOG rejected the plan, the grades were released, and students graduated

Management better figure out real quick then how to get rid of the statue.

I highly doubt this is more than a minor inconvenience to any student. Any 3rd party relying on a grade is going to be accommodating in this case.

Protests don’t work if they aren’t disruptive— it’s the “disobedience” in civil disobedience.

Sure?

I think you're focusing on the wrong thing here in my argument. I don't care why they're protesting. They could be protesting the fact that rjrumfel doesn't make 300k/year, and I would still say that they need to do their job because other people depend on their job.

Now this is UNC, so I'm sure all of these students are happy not to get these grades because it makes them sleep better at night knowing that their doing their part to get rid of this evil piece of shaped metal. But I guarantee you there are a few students that feel a little pissed about it.

I'm just confused why it's okay to quit your job in protest, but not okay to refuse to do your job in protest. Both result in students not getting their diplomas, which is what you seem to be most concerned with, but the former seems like it would be even worse for students.

What if it were a statue of Heinrich Himmler at a college in Germany? Would you be okay with students protesting that? I just wonder where you draw the line.
